aim is just the instant messanger part. aol is an internet service provider that provides you with instant messanger and email. aim is free.... aol is not.

ahah! so the aol im is a separate program running thru the aol browser, and aim is a separate program altogether? if that's right, then i got it.

pretty much. AOL IM isn't really a separate program running the the AOL interface, though, it's really just built into the interface. and AIM is a separate program altogether.
