In 1889 King Umberto and Queen Margarita of Italy visited a small pizzeria in Naples, Italy. Excited about the King and Queen’s visit, the owner of the pizzeria made a thin-crusted pizza imitating the colors of the Italian flag with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese topped with basil leaves. The Queen expressed her love for this fresh tasting pizza. In the Queen’s honor, the owner of this small Italian pizzeria named his new creation the Margarita pizza. The Margarita pizza became a taste sensation throughout Italy and helped popularize pizza throughout Europe and later the United States.
