you can only call a timeout either when you have possession of the ball, or when a foul has been called. When you call a timeout you can check the ball in from halfcourt, usually teams do this when time is running out
so it's an option? because i've seen a timeout called with plenty of time on the clock in the first quarter, and the ball is checked in from the back court.
