Basketball Rules
does anyone know some basic basketball rules? i have some questions to post, but i'm not going to try to write ALL of them unless someone can help. i've basically been addicted to this b-ball game on my x-box, and i don't understand all the rules. here's an example:
- the stats show fouls and gives. what's a give?
- what dictates a team's ability to call a timeout and then check the ball in from the other team's half of the court? (usually when one team scores, the other team checks it in behind the basket. but near the end of the game, if after one team scores, the other team calls a timeout, they get to check the ball in from the sidelines, at the other end of the court...why?)
- at the beginning of the game (and OT), a jump ball takes place. for the other periods, who gets to check in the ball?

Hmm.. this stuff isn't in the instruction book? I usually get "fantasy" sports games, like NBA Jam, so I don't need to follow rules and anything goes.. Just curious, what basketball game is it?
the general rules of basketball are not in the book.
Okay... I thought you were like me and don't consult the instructions beforehand... oh well...
dave...i read the ENTIRE instruction manuel the moment i open the box/pack/etc. of course, half of it makes no sense, but...
oh, and it's NBA Inside Drive 2002
it probably means "fouls to give". when one of your players fouls a player while he is in the middle of taking a shot, the fouled player will be awarded free throws. however, if the player is fouled while dribbling, or while not taking a shot, he will not necesarily get to shoot free throws, because each quarter a team has a certain amount of fouls to give. once a team reaches that amount of fouls to give (i believe it's 5 or something) every foul you make will put your opponent on the free throw line, whether it is in the act of shooting or not.
i understand what you're referring to. i foul alot trying to steal the ball. i usually can hear the announcer saying, "that was the 2nd team foul," etc. and i noticed that it resets after each period. but i don't think this is 'fouls to give'.

you can only call a timeout either when you have possession of the ball, or when a foul has been called. When you call a timeout you can check the ball in from halfcourt, usually teams do this when time is running out
so it's an option? because i've seen a timeout called with plenty of time on the clock in the first quarter, and the ball is checked in from the back court.
yeah i think that's how it works
thanks

the team that lost the jump ball get it the 2nd and 4th and the team that got it gets it the 3rd
