but people do still get treated badly, like Karamo on RealWorld-Philly so it's still touchy and it's hard growing up hearing the stories of mistreatment that your family has gone through too.

yeah it's tough. My grand mother is west indian so i had to hear from her and my mom how tough it was for them growing up in the last generation about 40-45 years ago. It's a bit of a different situation because my grandmother is dark skinned but was mixed herself, so my mom is light skinned. THey had to say that she was their (mom & aunt & uncle) nanny when they went out shopping in a 'white' store.
