i'd talk to a reliable jeweler. i've had my gold ring for seven years. sure it's worn down a bit...but that's not the point. it's the sentimental value that's important to me.

that's what I'm saying - I dont want to have to replace it if it wears so thin, it breaks.

wears so thin, it breaks??? i've never heard someone's wedding band breaking...especially on guys who may work with their hands all their life. keep in mind that getting a 14k ring vs. 18k will make it stronger, because the more gold, the softer the metal.
