Interesting, I've thought about reading a Dune book, but haven't gotten the chance yet.
Where's a good place to start?

n[jk...obviously there are movies for the first 2 books. but there are certain aspects of family background and history that aren't directly covered by the films. so, you really should read the 1st book: dune.
not to get into the whole, "the book was better" argument, but i remember liking the first movie, but i had a hard time with all of the voice-overs. in the book, you realize that frank herbert likes to tell you what people are thinking and you can compare that against what they actually say. it's rather insightful, i think...and realistic. so, there are all these sections of italicized words that just don't translate too well to the film. when i saw the tv film versions, i had already read the first 3 books. so, the voice overs made more sense.
Read the first book. It is a sci-fi book, but all of that is incidental.
