Ok...I listened to some clips of these guys...I'm not impressed at all...

juicymango Jun 6, 2006

by the way Rush is horrible

brotherman Jun 6, 2006

Name a band who plays their instruments better. The next level up would be Pink Floyd.

socalgal Jun 6, 2006

you're just partial to classic rock....NEXXXXXT

brotherman Jun 6, 2006

Well more groups need to learn how to play like these guys do. Music shouldn't be a headache inducer.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

hmm, YOU can say that, I can say that....but its not the case to many. Remember back in that day that form of music had their little brotherman in the corner screaming about that style of music being inane. lol

so just like beauty.....its in the eye of the beholder.

theremin thereminOG 2002

Well said. Just because a style of music isn't to one's liking, doesn't mean they lack talent. Talent is projected in different styles. For instance there's definately punk bands out there who can play intricate classic progressive rock music, but choose not to, because they have more fun doing songs with 3 power chords repeatedly. But, even if they couldn't play classic rock or whatever, still really doesn't mean they have less talent. It's like in sports. Just because a person plays one sport, doesn't mean he lacks being a talented sportsperson, because he doesn't play the sport that you may like. It's like a comparing apples with oranges type thing.

Beating on an intrument is not talent. My 6 year old could do that. That's like saying a bench player stacks up to a starter on a baseball team just because he can hit a ball too. For whatever reason kids today just like LOUD. Loud is not talent.

are you ignoring reason for the sake of argument?

I'm saying the notes played by bands like Rush take more talent than notes played by Ska or whatever you guys call this genre of music. It's beyond who likes what at this point. Like whoever you want. But don't tell me Ska bands have an ounce of the same talent as Rush, Pink Floyd, Journey, Bon Jovi, U2. Those guys will always be remembered. Story of the Year and bands like that are easily forgotten. It's pub music, nothing more.

Lets use a baseball analogy. The groups I mentioned are like a class of player like Joe Dimaggio and Mickey Mantle. The groups you guys like are like a class of player such as Ryan Langerhorns and Dan Wilson. Dimaggio and Mantle are legends. These other 2 guys are regular Joe Schmos that no one will remember except a statistician.

And yes Ian, this subject is a big Pet Peeve of mine.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

he hasn't listened to it, so he doesn't know, yet he acts like he knows

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

dan dan dan dan DAN.... you're making yourself sound so silly because you are speaking out of ignorance. i have listened to the bands you like, i don't claim to know every subtle nuance about them but at least i have listened to them. meanwhile you are stating "facts" about bands you haven't even listened to just because it falls under a certain genre.

/bandfromsociety/02%20Blueprint%20Of%20The%20Fall.mp3

loud? yes
punk? yes
awesome? definitely
drummer as good as neil peart? maybe, but who cares! he's awesome

please tell me your 6 year old could open for this band, tell me that he could get on a stage and bang on a guitar and that people would like it. i don't expect everyone to like this kind of music, but don't say that they don't know how to play because that is just IG-NANT!!! don't speak of what you know nothing daaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

B
brothermanOG 2004

I've heard you play Matt. I was 2 feet away from you guys in your parent's basement. You guys are ok. My point is this style of music is pub music. Easily forgotten.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

i'm not saying i was good, i'm not good. they are though, i could never play like that. let it go dan, u can't change the world

B
brothermanOG 2004

I'll listen to the clip when I get home. No sound card here at work.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

seriously though, call neil peart on the phone. i bet you that he has heard of strung out and i bet HE thinks they're good. so it means you disagree with him, which proves my point that I'M RIGHT! I WIN!!!

COUNT IT!!

B
brothermanOG 2004

Neil Peart is my God. I must follow whatever he says. LOL!

The problem may be that John Hughes scarred me. I hated whatever he subjected me to.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

hahaha... ok now i understand

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

all in all you wont get it cause you dont want to. you like a different style of music, everyone else here likes a different style too....and thats cool! just appreciate not everyone is alike & we can all learn something from one another.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

i would say we should sit around in a circle and sing kumbaya... if i didn't think it was such a lame song... and possibly pagan

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 thefunkyfresh

wow, i like it a lot (the song)

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder

it's strung out, one of the best progressive punk bands in existence. That particular CD is amazing, but most of their stuff is really really good. As much as I love their classic stuff, I think their newer albums are even better!

My favorite CD's by them are actually the 3 most recent ones featuring all new songs (they had a live cd that's amazing, too, but I'm not going to include that):

An American Paradox
The Element of Sonic Defiance (more like an EP)
Exile in Oblivion

Also, ever popular, is their Twisted By Design CD.

theremin thereminOG 2002

Playing something with complicated and numerous chord changes and what have you, just for sake of playing complicated and number chord changes, does not determine that it is more listenworthy than something that is more simplified. Talent is apparent when the band got across what they wanted to get across. "Loud" and "simple" is what is called for sometimes, to get across the emotion of why the song was set out to be created in the first place. And, I'm defending this, being a member in one band, that is probably closer to something you would like.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

or listen to a johnny cash song, very simple, but usually cool in its own way

theremin thereminOG 2002

I thought about mentioning Johnny Cash too. Strange.
