exactly!
btw rush is not good
hahahah
See Rush is a good example. I love them, but I know a lot of people don't. Same difference with Indie. But in Rush's case, they at least play like a normal rock group, except Geddy Lee has an extreme voice. And they have had hits on the charts before.
this comment kind of kills your whole argument.
you can't argue both sides! a lot of indie bands have charted. Like that one song by the plain white t's "hey there delilah", I would say they were at one time indie, maybe even a little "punk" to an extent, but they play other styles too.
basically you're speaking out of ignorance because you just don't know
Wait...wait....wait... "At one time they were Indie". You just killed your point. Take your ignorant label someplace else.
how is that ignorant? Take any band... any one... if they have several cd's or records out. Listen to the first one... then listen to the rest, VERY VERY VERY rarely do they ALL sound the same, bands go through changes, styles, sounds... everything. A band that maybe when they first started out with a certain style ended up being totally different.
ie Goldfinger was SKA in the very beginning, latest cd i dont think has one horn on the entire record.
i know you are just trying to fill your day with arguing and/or flexing your muscles with alex... but educate yourself a little bit before you try to argue on a subject you dont really know anything about.
what he said
i gotcha back BRUTHAAAAA
Rush has changed their style over the years, so I know what you are saying. I'm not sure what exactly I need to educate myself in. I didn't know there were classes on listening to music. All I'm saying is that the masses choose what is mainstream and what they want by what they buy. I don't agree with the masses sometimes, but it is what it is. I would say it's pretty ignorant to say Spoon for example, is better than U2. If you like Spoon, wonderful. But to say people have no taste in music because of that is ignorant. That's what people like (U2). So I'd say people like you would be outnumbered big time.
"All I'm saying is that the masses choose what is mainstream and what they want by what they buy."
No no no! The man totally decides this! Big music companies decide what the people want and then they give it to them. The people just assume it is what they want, buy it, and listen to it.
Hahaha... This made me laugh. Basically you are saying the man thinks for us, when we are creatures that possess freewill to choose.
You don't think that's how it is? (haha I sound so nutty!) But think about it, advertising and all that, it's basically like brainwashing.
it is true! you make it true dude!
for instance, take dashboard confessional (not my favorite but i'll use it as an example). He put out like 4 or 5 albums before he got his break and released some songs that hit high in the charts, the one was the main song for spiderman 2.
does that mean that his other albums weren't good? NO! it just means that he wasn't discovered. Dude there are thousands of awesome artists out there that just don't get the right breaks and become as you say "mainstream" but they are still great.
and the man does think for some. he thinks for those that will only listen to "safe" music, that gets tons of radio play and that everybody else likes instead of thinking for themselves, and liking something whether it's popular or whether its something that nobody's heard of. and you will never hear of them as long as you buy all of your music at wal-mart
But I already said I don't like a lot of today's mainstream. The man deflects off me.
I definitely agree some go unnoticed for a time. But if they truly have what it takes, they're going to be discovered eventually.
I like Rush. Does that sound safe to you? When I'm blasting it while sitting in traffic, I'm sure some people are ready to kill me.
nah they don't all get discovered. or sometimes a label will offer to sign them as long as they change their music or agree to let them do crazy post production stuff on it. a lot of artists aren't willing to sign their souls over to the devil and sacrifice their creative integrity. others just are content playing the music they love and don't want to get huge
Matt, the man's already gotten to him. Just walk away.
"I would say it's pretty ignorant to say Spoon for example, is better than U2."
WHY IS THAT IGNORANT?!?! just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it's wrong or right. how could you possibly know who is a better band? beauty is in th eye of the beholder. have you ever heard that before? furthermore, how skilled you are at playing your instruments does not determine how good one band is compared to another. like i said before, greenday does not play the most technical music in the world, their songs are quite simple really, but they still are amazing.
some people are too dumb to argue with, because it is impossible to reason with them. brotherman does not understand the concept of opinions, and is too poop brained and stubborn to stop arguing. and if you let it, this dang thread will go on forever.
hahhaha. It's like trying to teach the Truth to a so-called "Born-Again Christian." If you've had that experience, you know what I'm talking about. The conversations will go on for ages upon ages if you let it, and just go around in circles and never make any progress. You still hafta talk to them tho, because you never know... hopefully one day they will come to their senses and everyone deserves to hear it and have the chance to change.
YES! exactly. that is exactly what it is like.
OMG i have. SO annoying and its SO sad that you show them scriptures that're SO simple and they dont see it. you jsut want to kick them sometimes. lol
Ok, this is not that kind of argument. My argument was that mainstream is more popular and has better bands than Indie. You guys say no. So it's like saying there's a guy in the minor leagues of baseball who is better than A-Rod. Maybe there is someone who ONE DAY will be better, but not now. The bands who make their way out of Indie are like minor leaguers getting the call up to the big show. Sure, the minors are full of talent, but that talent does not always lead to becoming a major leaguer. Does that make sense?
I knew a guy in high school who made it to AA ball. I thought for sure he'd go all the way, he was talented. But he didn't. Can I rightfully say he was as good as any major leaguer? No way! But he was still talented. The bands have some measure of talent in Indie, but most will always fall under the radar, because people just don't want it. It's not the man. It's people who make their say. Ever watch American Idol? It's full of mainstream sounds. I don't watch it very often, but when I have that is what I would hear. That's what people want. If the people on here like Underground music, so be it, but that doesn't make the masses idiots because they like regular stuff. Spoon is just plain horrible. It's like they are just having a jam session and not playing coherently. That's why I don't like a lot of this stuff. If you like it, knock yourself out.
just let it go. you stick with what you love and everyone else will stick with what they love. no one is right NOR wrong. and like, i think it was alex or theremin, stated....beauty is in the eye of the beholder. our tastes vary. we're not all going to like everything everyone does. but thats the beauty....thats what makes us mesh so well as human beings!
so let it go.
I totally agree with that, and have no problem with anyone liking Indie. But the numbers say people like Mainstream better, so there has to be something to that, not that people don't explore other music or that people are brainwashed by ads.
so what? we can all argue too that your brainwashed cause you think rush is the best band EVER! LOL
Hey, I think in my little world they're the best. I know they are not considered that in real life. Where's my burrito? LOL!
the reason i posted this is because of the lyrics:
They play Good Charlotte on the radio
and that's the way I like it
They play Sleepy Jackson on the radio
and that's the way I like it
and that's the way I like it
I hear Beyonce on the radio
and that's the way I like it
cos that's the way I like it
and they don't play me on the radio (whoo!)
and that's the way I like it
Some people (EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE FANTASTIC)don't want to be mainstream.
i for example am upstream.
Hrmmmm. hahaha. This is forum is so addicting by now. You think The Beatles were never asked to be signed, since they would keep putting out stuff on their own label, "Apple?" I mean, I think The Beatles would be considered an Indie band, no? So, I guess they're rubbish. Beethoven has to be a rubbish composer, because classical music doesn't appeal to the masses, he doesn't get airtime on the Top 40 radio stations, and his piano playing is just all over the place with no poppy catchiness.
Would you say William Hung has talent? Curious. Let me refresh memory with this vid --
By no surprise he didn't make it through Idol. But he actually was signed onto a label based on that performance and made an album. "The album has sold approximately 200,000 copies and peaked in the top 50 of the U.S. Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart.
To promote his album, Hung performed before an audience of nearly 20,000 during half-time at a Golden State Warriors game on April 6. Several of his songs reached the top 10 on Apple's iTunes charts, and the album reached #3 on Amazon.com's sales rankings."
This just proves that the music biz is complete fluke sometimes and sometimes more about the biz than about the music, especially when it comes to mainstream.
I think U2 has talent and I like them. I think Rush has talent but I don't them. William Hung's talent was to sing no greater than a cracky voiced drunkard at a kareoke bar, but having an expert marketer, marketing that as his Shtick. And fooling America into making him a rubbish singing Rich man. More comedic than musical really. But, I'd feel like I was scammed if I caught myself in the shoppes buying his album.
Easy, if 50 million people like U2 vs 1 million people liking Spoon, enough said. The people have spoken.
And you've scientifically executed that census taking, have you?
yep, you are exactly right. because more people like U2, they are better than spoon. we'll all be good little automaton robots and go along with whatever everybody else's opinion is. because the majority opinion is ALWAYS fact. it's indisputable. everyone has been convinced. YOU HAVE EXERCIIISED THE DEMONS!!!
nope. i'm agreeing with him. he's right. he's always right about everything.
No, I'm not. When we have our baseball is better than football arguments, there's no right or wrong to that, because it's all about personal preference. But then I used physics with you to prove hitting a ball is the hardest thing to do in sports, you still said I was wrong. So I use things as a basis in my arguments. The problem is, we don't all go by the same basis.
oh my god!!! brotherman is too annoying. dan hall i can take. but brotherman is the devil.
Hahahahahahahahaha..... This is so much fun. Dan Hall is awesome, I will agree.
People's opinions are what matter. If 50 million opinions say yes and 1 million say no, then people think U2 is better. It's the same concept with anything. You have an IPhone and a generic cell phone, guess who's going to win the popularity contest... Like my baseball analogy, if a guy is tearing it up in the minors, he's going to get the call up. Numbers don't lie.
no i didn't kill my point. the best bands are progressive and don't just keep playing the same thing for years and years, they evolve. i don't see how that doesn't make sense. do you even know what you are talking about?
i feel like i'm arguing with a woman who won't eat meat because it's cruel to animals and yet wears fur coats.
Ok, evolve away, but if the masses don't like it, then it's not good in the eyes of the public. It'll be underground forever.
strung out is a punk band and plays sold out stadium shows so that doesn't make sense. green day is a punk band and is considered mainstream, so is offspring, blink 182... all those guys have made a pretty good living playing the kind of music they like
and what i was saying before was that a band like dashboard confessional, or plain white t's or jimmy eat world could be indie, or punk maybe and chart and get widespread notoriety at least on some of their stuff
I think this topic is straying way off topic. Is Strung Out considered a mainstream band? I'm sure some punk is mainstream, even if I think it sucks.
i'm just saying, who is the public? just because it's not what you would consider "mainstream" doesn't mean there aren't millions of people who like it. it's ok, stick to your bubblegum pop
The public is who buys there albums.
"their" is the correct term get it right!!! LOL
Thanks Gina, you grammatical genius.
i highly doubt strung out has ever sold out a stadium, considering u2 didnt even come to stadiums last time around for fear of not being able to sell out...
but thank you for voting one for the "blink 182 not sellouts" campaign...that was totally a hot topic like 6 years ago
U2 can sell out any stadium BUT the purpose of small arenas(last few tours) was they wanted it to be more intimate, more old school...like when they first started out playing the packed out arenas.
i meant a place like the tweeter center or something
