actually, contrary to popular belief, golf wasn't invented until the 17th century, well after the fall of the Roman empire. The first golf balls were leather sacks stuffed with feathers and pebbles, and the first golf clubs were nothing more than a long thin handle (shaft) with a shaped metal head on the end.
