thanks for all that helped me out with this. she's gonna be a tough nut to crack, very steeped in false teachings.... hellfire, rapture, trinity, etc... I don't think I want to give her any internet links or literature because i'm afraid she'll try to give me stuff to read.
Also... anybody have a good explanation of john chapter 1? In the NIV version it says the word WAS god
Read the whole chapter of first John. John 1:18 makes it pretty clear that he is not equal to Jehovah.
Also, there's a scripture in Acts that talks about Paul being considered a god, because he gets bitten by poisonous snakes but doesn't die (or something like that). If you have a greek version of the greek scriptures(blue Bible), you can show her (or you could just explain to her) that the words used to call paul a god were the same words used to call Jesus a god. In place they use "a", but in the other they do not. (does this make sense?)
also, there is a big difference between a translation of the bible and a version. NIV is a version which means that it has been changed quite a bit. ie. "a god", jehovah's name... as todd said the greek interlinear translation show clearly that it says "a god". sounds kinda tedious, but it's all about context too.
thanks t-baz, for clearing that up a bit.
