I think it was something like pre-1940 the Society didn't depict Jesus as having a beard, because before then, the general public viewed people having beards, as crooked-men. You know, like men with something up their sleeve, and whatnot ...not trustworthy. So, if literature was being offered, with pictures of Jesus with a beard, the householder might not be so prone to accept. Obviously, when you're preaching, you don't want them to view him, in a wrong light. Especially during the 20s this was an issue. If you weren't clean-cut, even if you were worldly, forget it. But, of course the times marched on, and people that didn't fit this bill, began growing beards, also. So no longer, did it mean, you were a certain type of person, because you had a beard. Come like the 40s, they depicted Jesus with the beard. I just saw depictions of Jesus without the beard, a couple of weeks ago, at Bethel.
