A friend of mine got an acura TL for his wife, it's six speed, and it is really nice. very fast too, and very roomy.
Seriously though -
Nissan Altima is an amazing vehicle. Reliable, roomy, speedy & great gas mileage. I prefer the newer model over the previous one.
Mazda Speed 3 didnt come out till 2006 so that's not in your 3-4 year range. Plus you wont find one for around 15k.
Subaru would be a great choice, but I think they are a bit pricey.
And I agree that Acura's are over priced.

those mazdaspeed 3s are nice! i love hatchbacks. But the interior is pretty cheesy, i gotta say. It looks a bit cheap. How about a saab? Know anything about em?

i find the TSX to be overpriced. I don't know that you could find one in your price range that isn't an 03. For that, I think you should get a newer car as opposed to a higher luxury model.

what's your budget? (Sorry if that's a rude question). 4 doors puts you in the Civic/Mazda 3 category - 2 doors is definitely RSX land. Might I suggest an 04 or 05 Mazda 3? Good value for the money.
Nissans are hot [i love my Maxima]. Mazdas are hot. Subarus are hot AND all wheel drive.
ya know, i like maximas, but i feel like they are too big for me. I want something i can zip around in.
I've been checking out the Volvo S40s also, but i kinda feel the same way about them.
