Plus Size

juicymango by juicymangoOG 2003 · Jan 15, 2004 · 811 views · ·

I caught a little bit of "America's Next Top Model" and I was appalled to see a girl who was skinny, 5'8" and 130 pounds considered a plus size model.

and then another girl, 5'10" and 130 pounds, told that she's "borderline" plus size.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!

I gotta say I'm completely stunned by this, and this is the reason why so many people in this country have body-image issues

I just cringe at the thought of 16 year old girls with low self-esteem watching that show last nite. Yikies.

Hey please participate in these polls, I might use them as research for something i'm workin on. Thanks! :)

LOL i love the 4th poll

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

i'm a fat man. so i dont care

malibu malibuOG 2001 ·

so mad they are showing the state of the union address tonite instead of the show.
the state of the union is the same it's alwas been since it started: dying and stupid. who cares?

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Instead of what show?

malibu malibuOG 2001 ·

i try to think about just staying in shape, and plus i'm waiting til i'm about 24 cuz that's what i'll mostly look like for the rest of my life. right now is just hormones fluxuating and growing up and getting used to being the way i look. i try REALLY hard not to let how i'm supposed to look bugging me. sometimes it works and others it doesn't but you can't change a billion dollar business because it hurts peoples self images. stupid greedy persons.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

well..the media's nothing more than just another bu$$iness...& they do a LOT of research to find out how the most amount of money can be drained from the public - & so far, flooding youths w/images of body sizes that are ANYTHING but average, seems to be working...cause, since most girls don't look like what the see on the front of YM, they're gonna be spending money to get as close as possible to it, if you see an image enough, whether you want to or not, you begin think of that as the standard, and start to compare yourself to it...the insecure are affected by this the most, cause they're the least happiest w/themselves to begin with

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

5'10, 130 lbs..hmm..I guess i'd have to see it, but, that seems pretty darn normal/average to me, for girls anyway...

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

You're joking right? I'm 5'1.5" and 118 pounds..if I were 8.5 inches taller and only 12 pounds heavier..I think there'd be a problem.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

hey, i'm really bad when it comes to judging peoples height & weight...but i'll take your word for it!

Good! Everything is now as it should be.

i think its really good to want to be in shape, but this country has such a warped view of self image. Blown so way out of proportion, its messed up so many girl's lives.

not a thing.

starshiptrooper starshiptrooperOG 2003 ·

hey u know Maryln Monroe was a size 14!
in the fifties it was *in* to be zaftig and then the 60s came along with Twiggy and ruined everything...

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

I was really curvy once (not a size 14..I'd be considered huge then with my frame) but it just looked weird with my height..like I was shrunken or something.

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

she doesnt look like a size 14 though

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

ya she does... she was super curvy! Little in the middle but she got much back...

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

also size 14 isn't as huge as some people may think. And it differs in pants and shirts.. a size 12 shirt may look like i'm wearing a sailboat. I comfortably can wear a size 11-12 jeans without looking like they're huge on me. heh. And then I can also fit into sizes 7-9 just fine... i duno, I don't care what the size on the pants says... of coruse it was nicer when it said.. 4.. 6.. haha i'll get back to that someday! haha new system..

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

I'm with you on that. Size really doesn't matter. It all depends on what fits. Some sizes do vary depends on the designer. But it does sadden me how woman are viewed in this world. I'm thankful curvy is in, that shows a little change in the structure.

beachbum beachbumOG 2002 ·

hahaha. go to old navy, i love their pants-according to them i'm a 4/6. not that it matters much, but like you said, it's just nicer.

malibu malibuOG 2001 ·

that's true. i used to be a size 14 but i don't ever think i looked as fat as youmight think. i have a larger bone structure and i'm pretty tall. 5'7" but closing in on 5'8" so my hip bones always jutted out that i needed bigger pants. that is why there's belts. but when i lost all my weight and was a size 5, mom said that was enough cuz i was shrunken and looked frightening.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

i used to be a size 18...not something im proud of...

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

The key words are "used to be"

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

yes but "used to" can turn into..."i am"

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Yeah, well, I don't think you even want to know what size I used to be.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

is it bad? I used to be big too, but I'm tall so you really couldn't tell as much, but now that I'm on the lighter side, i feel the difference and more energetic! Like i said the key words are "used to be" so it looks like we've taken the turn for better health!

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Yeah. It was really bad and it wasn't even that long ago. And I still have a fair amount of weight to lose. I'm not sure if I should post this, but if you really want to know just how bad it was, then here is a picture of me from my cousin's wedding on Feb. 15 of last year. (I'm the guy in the blue shirt standing on the right of the picture. Here is a picture of me today.

wow, nice job!!

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

ya lucy was like a size 12 also, and it shocked me cause i thought she at the most was like a 4 or 6,, I must have a real bad eye for sizes, i think i only know HUGE and xsmall other than that i would loose if i had to stand at a booth and guess peoples clothing size, cause seriuosly, even though she was curvey it seemed like it wasnt much and it seemed like she was inshape. and they had such tiny wastes! I duno woman back then even if they were bigger sizes, i dont think they were fat. or maybe i just have bad eye perception, ha ha

malibu malibuOG 2001 ·

i was thinking the same thing cuz she looked pretty and it was news to me that she was plus sized.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003 ·

There is a vintage clothing store around here that I go to a lot. Sizes were different then. The lady who owns it won't let me try on clothes until she has measured me (and I won't let her). But she told me that a size today was actually smaller back then. If I want to try on a 10, its gonna be way smaller. It has something to do with your personal measurements. She is the only onld lady I've ever met that prolly still smokes pot-I stop listening to her babble after a while.

starshiptrooper starshiptrooperOG 2003 ·

you are right-sizes HAVE changed. I was talking with an ex-Mandees manager not too long ago and she said *yesterdays* 7/8s are now 5/6s. etc. Cant beleive i was a 2 once.
so marylyn might have really been a 10/12.
but it really dont matter as long as u feel happy in your own skin.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

WHATT,, PLUS SIZE,, are you kidding me!, I didn't see it, I can't stand to see shows like that.. That's is ridiculous.

The last poll I have a problem answering, cause you know how I am about people being in shape, so if gaining 30 pounds of muscle weight that's not a problem, but 30 pounds of FAT is not healthy so Id porobably would want them to get back in shape to be healthy not that I think they are fat. Same fer me, although im always on the wanting to gain weight side, but i would not want it to be fat, I would want it to be properly spread through my body, and be tone.

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

I am actually gaining weight for the first time in almost 10 years (not counting the time I was "with child"), and I'm ok with it. I'm at 120 now, and that's still considered a little underweight for my height. I'd have no problem putting a few extra pounds on, as long as I still worked out and stayed in shape.

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

where can you find out what your weight to height raitio should be? I would like to know mine

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

Hmmm....if you search online for a BMI calculator, it should give you that information, and a bunch of other info. My hubby is really into that sort of thing, and he calculates his body mass, and weight and stuff, and keeps charts and everything, too. It's pretty detailed.

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

hmm I dont think it worked right, cause at my height and my age im 29 pounds UNDER weight, if I was 29 pounds over weight, I'd be very chubby, I'd think

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Which one did you use 'cause your age shouldn't matter. A BMI of between 18.5 and 25 is considered normal regardless of age.

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

I was under that,it was 16.5 I know im under weight but i dont think by almost 30 pounds! 5 or 6 sounds more like it

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Yikes! No. 20 or 30 pounds sounds about right if you have a BMI of only 16.5.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

i'm usually about 13% in the winter, and drop to about 11.5 in the summer....but why does all this matter/

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 · skaorsk8

BMI is not a percentage. Are you talking about body fat percentage?

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

NO WAYYYYY, , If i gained that much weight i think id defly look like a porker,, plus i have small bone stucture, if it makes a difference, ,cause now i weigh about 95 pnds i think maybe 98, ,and it said i should weigh 129, Thats alot, at 105 im doin good. 105 or around there is what id like to be, but its ridiculous tryna gain weight!

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 · reaf

A small frame might make a 10 or 15 pound difference, but that still leaves you 15 or 20 pounds underweight.

reaf reafOG 2002 · dgiaimo

yeah so that sounds better than 30, cause if im 95 and i want to be 110,or i mean 105, thats about a 10-15 pound dif, and that should be good! say cheese

iwz iwz ·

omg poll overload
