Prom

yodasucka by yodasuckaOG 2003 · Feb 16, 2004 · 433 views

So as many of you know, I am currently in my senior year of high school. All every one talks about for the entire year is either prom or college.

Now, the college thing is hard because every one knows that I have great grades, good SAT scores and have taken honors classes for all 4 years of high school- so it is just expected that I will attend a great college. But I’m not because my parents aren't going to pay for me and since I have no extra curricular activities- the chances of me getting a scholarship are VERY slim. So I will either end up in community college or just not go at all. So this topic is hard because it’s disappointing.

But any way, the purpose of this thread is prom. Most witnesses don’t go to Prom but there are some that do. Now, is Prom not attended by witnesses simply because of the stigmas that go with it (drinking, partying, hotel rooms) or is it because it’s a night spent with worldly people? Did any of you attend your prom? If not, why? And if Prom is not attended, what about project graduation? That is a night spent with worldly kids, but it is also kindda like a school trip because you are with teachers the whole time. Just wanted to get a little feed back from you all. Any advice, experiences, or whatever would be great :)

no one at my school even talked about prom after the fact-that's how lame it was. then again i went to a nerd school....

my high school prom is coming up, but i don't have any intention of going. there's only one other jw in my class who's a girl, but i wouldn't prefer to hang out with a girl cuz it'd look like a date, and i don't wanna date yet, i'd feel restricted and i like being single lol. and with my friends at skool, i don't wanna risk getting sucked into trouble. i have a friend in cali and he went to his prom with his jw buddies, he said he had a good time, no trouble. watever you do, just don't get in trouble.

juicymango #7 juicymangoOG 2003

I did not go to the prom and I had absolutely no desire to. I thought the whole thing was wayyyyyyy lame and despite being pressured by friends to go, I kept saying, I can't stand like 98% of the people in my class, why would i pay money to hang out with them... nooooooo thanks! Just my opinion though. OH, I also don't really like dressing up or dancing... sooo that might be a factoria.

thefunkyfresh #7.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

DITTO! nobody in school gave a rat's butt about me, so why would I want to spend money to go hang out with them for a night. I just think high school is the lamest thing on earth, and after you graduate, you realize even more so how truly lame it is. The saddest thing is when you run into kids who were really popular in highschool 5 years after graduation working at blockbuster or the gas station, and just going absolutely nowhere in life. prom is lame!!

juicymango #7.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

haha isn't it great tho, to see like the "best looking" person from high school looking fat and greasy. I love it.

specialk #7.1.1.1 specialkOG 2003

That just happened to me!!!! I ran into a couple of kids from high school, looking all sorts of gross.....they were they "pretty people" in high school. I felt happy...is that wrong?

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

No. Haha. It's the same type of feeling as when a famous person says "i was a geek in high school" and you feel happy (sometimes) because high school really means nothing..... anyway it's always good to see arrogant people fall.... and the lowly rise

specialk specialkOG 2003

Yeah.....I was in Walgreens last week, and saw this guy I went to high school with. He was really good looking, but really cocky, and he was mean to girls he thought were "beneath" him (including me). He was always saying he was going to become a big important somebody, and make millions each year. He graduated 2 years before me, so I hadn't seen him since. I saw him Friday, and he was WORKING at Walgreens. Now, I'm not making fun of that job by any means...hey, you gotta do what you gotta do...I've had MUCH worse jobs. BUt it was just funny to see him do that, and before, he was saying he was going to be "somebody." I bet that job is pretty humbling for him. To me, it doesn't matter what you do for a living (to an extent....I'm not saying you gotta strip or sell drugs), but just don't be cocky. A good job doesn't make one person better than the next.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

yeah i totally agree, haha that's funny. Hahahaha I'm trying to think of like a witty thing you "coulda" said to him but I'm blank at the moment. And I prolly wouldn't say anything either just laugh on the inside.

"WOW YOU ARE REALLY SOMEBODY WEEEEEEEEEEEEE WORKIN AT THE WALGREEEENSS!!!!"

i duno haha

specialk specialkOG 2003

Yeah.....I wanted to say, "Wow....Steve....Walgreens, huh? How's that college degree workin' out for ya?"

That would have been mean, though, and I'm not really a mean-spirited person, so I didn't say anything.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

maybe he used that degree to become manager of the shaving cream department, you never know.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 skaorsk8

I would love it if my no-degree self could one day be the boss of a high school scholarship/degree boasting jerk from the past. Haha. Boss him or her around and stuff. Would be nice. I'd have to get a job at the mall to do that tho, seems like that's where all the college grads go these days...

violetboregaurd #6 violetboregaurdOG 2003

hey i went to prom with my best friend at the time. We were both witnesses, well we both still are.
I had a lot of fun, we danced, ate and bugged out. More than likely after high school you will NEVER see any of those people again. If I could do it all over again, I'd bought a better dress - but it was fun.
Just come to your own conclusion and don't do it cause other people are.
And actually one of my best friends decided NOT to go to her prom, so me her and three of our other friends went to Florida for the week - there are other things you can always do...

socalgal #5 socalgalOG 2003

Well, first of all I didn't go to my prom because I was over school by that time and i was "too cool" to go since I was already hitting the hollywood club scene - lol BUT I don't regret not going. We did attend some formals but it just wasn't worth it. I'm sure you'll make the right decision and you're not a bad person if you do go, just make sure its with another wit =)

*regarding college, its fun to go to community to get your general ed out of the way and then apply to university...by then you'll know what you want and if it's your thing....may the force be with you! ;)

modestjesse #4 modestjesseOG 2004

Alrighty, calling Project Graduation a class trip is just an excuse. I didn't go because I knew it wasn't a class trip, I knew what it would be and what it would turn into, and I didn't need that trouble. With all that said, I was also bad in my senior year, I just wasn't bad with worldly kids.

I did not go to my prom, I didn't really know too many people in my class because I associated mainly with my girlfriend at the time and the people from her class (she was 2 years behind me).

But, I did go to her prom. (I was also not in the truth at the time). The prom was nothing. Seriously, nothing at all. You get dressed up, you walk in (the fools waste money on a limo), and you sit at a table snack, talk to some people, make fun of what others are wearing, and do some dancing (if you like to dance). The real party is after the prom, when you go down to Seaside or whatever for the weekend, but that's where the real trouble begins. To me the prom was just a waste, we didn't have fun, we just went to say we went.

With that said, you're a smart person, do the research and come to your own conclusion. I didn't hang with many in my class so I didn't care if I went or didn't. My 10 year reunion is coming up in two months, I'm not even going to that, but again, that's because I really didn't know too many from my class.

I think I should officially not comment on this. I didn't go because I thought the whole prom thing was corny. After talking to people that went, my suspicions were confirmed. Besides the fact that there would have been no way I could have pulled that off at my house . . . My mother went to her prom I believe, and she brought a Witness date. She didn't recommend going for me though. And also, my senior year of high school was one of my weakest times spiritually, but I still wouldn't go to the prom.

specialk #1 specialkOG 2003

I did, in fact, go to my prom. Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year. Did the Homecoming dances too. In my defense, I wasn't a Witness at the time, though.
I think there are a lot of stigmas that go along with things like prom, and I do know a few Witness kids that went to prom way back in the day. At my particular prom, there were plenty of chaperones, good lighting (no super-dark corners, if you know what I mean), fun music, and no drinking or drugs and stuff. And I didn't really talk to many of the kids that I went to school with, mostly because I didn't like any of them. It was all the "after-prom" stuff that had the not-so-good things happening, and not everyone does stuff after prom. Most people in my school went to a friend's house, or just went home or something. Now, I'm by no means saying "Go Prom!!!" and promoting it. I'm just saying that some do, and some don't. Around here, it seems that it was more of a matter of conscience. It may be viewed differently in other areas. I know all the girls that just graduated within the past few years in my hall, did not attend their proms. For me, had I been a Witness, my decision might have been different as well.

yodasucka #1.1 yodasuckaOG 2003

i get what ur saying.. i know a million witnesses that didn't go to their proms, and then i know a few that did. the ones that did all brought witness dates... so what if u bring another witness that just leave afterwards? the way i c it is, i'vebeen in school with these kids for the past 12 years. and none of them have gotten me to do drugs or drink or have sex so what are the chances that prom night will be any different? i think its just fun to dress up and dance all night. Even if it didn't bother my conscience to go, i would end up not going simply cuz its a lotta money (plus we are having our own eZabel Formal around that time!) but i was just curious as to what others thought on the matter...

skaorsk8 #1.1.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

see, i think, when people try to make like "fake witness formal proms", that just defeats the purpose. you have to dress up and rent a huge hall and pay lots of money to have fun? can't you just chill?

although, having said that, seeing your friends dressed up and dancing is humorous. it's kind of like a wedding where no one gets married.

thatdarngirl #1.1.1.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Okay, if you want to have 100+ people at your house and feed them all so we can just chill I'm totally down with that.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

hmm that's more for the summer...

anyway, you know what i meant. it's expensive and time consuming to put that all together. you know? food, drinks, chaperones, guest list, seating, music, etc etc...i wouldn't put that responsibility on anyone...

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Naw, I totally understood I was just joking. But the thing is, that's what we're trying to do..have a wedding without getting married. Only, we're not gonna have like seating charts and all that.

specialk specialkOG 2003

Yeah...when is this upcoming event anyways? I'm gonna have to plan a trip up there for it. :)

tinser tinserOG 2002

this formal thing is actually happening?

Go to Punta Cana, DR. It's as beautiful as Hawaii (ok, maybe a teeeeny bit less), but you can fly there much cheaper. And the resorts are amazing. And the FRUIT!!! OMG!!!!

iwz iwz specialk

my wife spent a month in DR, so that's kinda out. and HI is too expensive and we're not really interested in going there... so, you know.

specialk specialkOG 2003 iwz

Yeah....I have a friend who was in the DR for 3 months when she was younger....great for going out in service and trying to find interested ones, and great for vacation, but not if you've been there for extended periods of time. I remember being very ready to go home at the end of our honeymoon. But Punta Cana was super-nice, if you stay in a hotel or a resort or something like that...kind of takes you away from everything else.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 tinser

Mid Spring-Early Summer. My dad's checking out dates cause he knows the people who control the club house.

punkprincess #1.1.1.2 punkprincessOG 2001

i had that... it actually was one of the most memorable times of my life. i really am happy that i did that and i have NO regrets. i thought it was so much fun, and everyone i knew at the time came! i had talked about it for like 5 years before i had it... saying my party was the anti prom/graduation party. and my view of prom... well its all conscience... all things are lawful but not all things are adventagious. in the truth people have a really bad light on the prom... and we want to be free from reproach, and not do anything that would offend or stumble OTHERS... so basically i didnt go, although i really wanted to.

specialk #1.1.2 specialkOG 2003

Yeah...I would certainly think hard about it before making a decision....not everyone views it the same way, either, so if you did decide to go, I wouldn't advertise it to everyone....some people tend to judge, even though they aren't supposed to.
And if you do go, be careful....I went to school with the same people for 12 years as well, and none of them ever pressured me to do stuff, up until my junior and senior years....depends on how comfortable they feel around you, and whatnot. People surprise you at times.
