I read in Shape yesterday that people who don't consume the recommended three servings of dairy per day (about 1.5 cups) are something like 28% more likely to develop heart disease than those who do. Not only does the calcium keep your heart healthy, but the magnesium also helps keep your arteries clear.
I'm definitely in the category that doesn't get enough dairy, but in view of that statistic, I want that to change.
I've always hated yogurt - I just bought some to eat and forced myself to eat about half before I started to feel nauseated. I don't like the way milk seems to coat my throat, even the 1%.
So how can we get the recommended allotment of dairy? Suggestions?

any more word on this milk thing
is it for real?
i mean i do love milk, i think it is delicious sometimes
but i just don't see drinking a cup of milk a day
don't you get enough calcium and magnesium if you take a good multivitamin?
I just finished reading this book by a vegan dietitian who is against the drinking of milk. I'll have to post a quote from the book later about how she believes the hormones in commercial milk make the nutritional benefits minimal. She also listed many legumes that have more calcium and magnesium than milk, in addition to other vitamins, and are therefore better. That really makes sense to me.
As far as humans not needing milk as they grow up, I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. It's obvious that other cultures around the world (europe, asia) don't have the same amount of dairy that we do, and they are certainly not as unhealthy as we are in america.
So my conclusion is: Unless I know the dairy farmer who's giving me the milk (incidentally, one of my former clients owns a dairy farm a few miles west) I don't feel comfortable putting it into my body. That's really the conclusion I was looking to draw, though, since I don't like milk products.
(Also, it's undeniable that the american dairy council has been goading the government in certain directions about dairy, and I don't like that. The government guidelines are clearly not the right place to look for diet advice.)
i buy organic milk & eggs. i wonder if it's a crock.
Yeah, I'm starting to doubt it all. It would be great if we could all have gardens year round and grow our own food - or even live near farms that grew it all. Our culture sucks. (If you can call it a culture.)
yeah i just think it's a conspiracy between the milk people and .. i duno.. the government... to get us to drink more milk.. maybe there's something in the milk that they will use for mind control!!!! haha
yeah this is what i was thinking, unless it's organic how do you know what's in the milk.. i remember when i was little in Poland we used to get fresh milk from a nearby farm and it was the most delicious thing ever, but yeah regular mass produced milk here is kind of scary really
and this campaign to "milk your diet" and drink 24 ounces of milk a day? That's 4 cups. Of milk. Ew.
plus its like a homework assignment
i know you don't like yogurt, but this was so good. i got fat-free plain yogurt, i put banana-nut granola in it, w/ strawberries, blackberries & blueberries, w/ a tablespoon of honey...it was delish...and only 5 WW points! great breakfast/snack
just chug a gallon once a week or maybe funnel it. Problem solved!
this just reminded me, did you guys hear about that girl that drank like two gallons of water w/out peeing for a contest on a radio station to win a Wii and died? crazy. she basically drowned herself. (i forgot if i commented about this already)
Someone told me about this!
It reminded me about this article I read about this one woman almost dying during the NY Marathon because she over-hydrated herself. Only the person who died for Wii is a lot stupider.
what about cottage cheese? and some yogurts that are not as.. yogurty? For example some of the super creamy yogurts that taste more like ice cream? i duno.
I just remember a few years ago being told that milk is bad. Then good. Then bad. Then good. It's dumb.
oh my gosh, you have to try the greek yogurt FAGE. it's usually found in the organic part of the dairy case. the stuff is AMAZING! it is super thick & creamy and tangy. it has sometimes honey on the one side or fruit. it's super deeeelish. it's really expensive though, like 3 bucks for one container.
I'm actually not a fan of greek yogurt. My grandmother always used to try to get me to eat it over pilaf, but I've always hated it. And cottage cheese is nasty to me. I'm clearly not a fan of the dairy industry.
oh man, tzatziki is practically my favorite part of a gyro.
I like tzatziki too - my dad used to make it with only a little yogurt and tons of cucumber and dill. I don't think I'd like it plain, like as veggie dip, but on a gyro or chicken, it's tasty.
yum
that sounds amazing
have you tried the lactose free milk? its all the benefits w/o the milky taste. there's soy also.
How do they get the lactose out of there, and where does it go? ;) Mysteries.
I mix milk in with my protein shakes.
I hate yogurt and milk, too. The only way I get my dairy is through cereal and ice cream (does the latter count?).
How could milk be that good for you? It comes from a cow, it's meant for baby cows to drink. We're supposed to drink milk from our mother's but only until a certain age. I just don't understand how it can be a good thing to drink.
I'm reading a new book by a vegan dietitian. Obviously, she'll be against animal products, but I'm interested to see her POV regarding milk especially. I'll post what the book says when I get to that chapter.
I've got an idea that will make a billion dollars. Sell chimp milk.
