Dieting...

juicymango by juicymangoOG 2003 · Oct 14, 2003 · 513 views

Yeah so I love reading and learning new nutritional information, reading about new diets, new ways to eat healthy, all that kind of stuff. I used to hate Atkins before I read the book and now I respect and love that way of eating. It's great and it really works!

For those of you who may actually not be familiar with the "real" Atkins and only know the "fad diet" version of it... you limit your carb intake dramatically for the first 14 days, and eat tons of things like cheese, steak, and salad (at least 3 cups of fresh vegetables a day are required)and then you gradually add carbs week by week until you stop losing weight. Then you try to stay at that carb level, so that you don't gain weight. It's great. You can basically eat whatever you want once you get going and lose some weight and get used to the routine of it... just watch the carbs and eat in moderation. But the way the diet works is it actually makes you less hungry, so you wind up eating less and not craving crap all the time. It's great.

However there is a *new* diet on the market, called the South Beach Diet which is extremely similar to Atkins, in fact, the Doc who wrote the book knew and respected Dr. Atkins and his work. The difference - you can eat more of certain carbs on the South Beach diet and also I believe there is less of a consumption of fat, where on Atkins you can eat more fat, which of course keeps you fuller, satisfies you, and somehow which I don't quite understand yet, helps your body burn fat.

People on Atkins lose weight, lower their cholesterol, lower their blood pressure, have tons more energy, and improve their way of life in general. However, it can be extremely difficult to stay on. So I guess that is where the South Beach Diet comes in.

If you're afraid of the Atkins fat but would like to try a low-carb way of life, check it out at www.southbeachdiet.com for more info, this is long enough already.

Anywhooooo

Weight loss isn't obvious. If it was obvious, 80% of America wouldn't be obese.

Thank you.

i signed a contract today for Oprah's bootcamp. (todd, please put away those pretzels.)

socalgal #14.1 socalgalOG 2003

OMG that's cool!!!!

forrestina #14.1.1 forrestinaOG 2002

Oprah looks amazing. she has abs. i mean abs on oprah...i never thought i'd see it in my lifetime. if she can do it after all her failed diets-i can do it, too.

socalgal #14.1.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

oh yeah she looks amazing!!! i'm pretty much on her "routine" w/the exception of exercising 8 times a week and the white stuff. im slowly starting to cut the "whites" out of my food.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

i'm doing it cold turkey. i'm a very grumpy person and it's only day 1.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

whites? like what exactly?

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

anything made with white flour basically. i don't use white flour anyway, but it will be good for me to eliminate for a month.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

ahhhh, funny. my mom talks about that. that's why we neve have white bread or anything like it in the house. i guess it's a good thing.

originalsnob originalsnobOG 2004

Also certain whites, like potatoes blanched flour, are empty carbs, they have very little, (if any) nutritional value. I use brown rice, whole wheat bread, flour, brown rice or whole wheat pasta... this is a little extreme for some. When we even eat potatoes, my family eats red skinned or sweet baked potatoes, not plain. At some point it was mentioned that there might be a possible link to cancer in an over consumption of certain "whites"...I dunno how much stock to put in this but, it can't hurt to be cautious :D

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

i get to eat my brown rice pasta and whole grain bread in one month i can't wait.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 forrestina

what do you get to eat now?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 socalgal

white chicken chili with white bread and white rice covered in other white foods.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 socalgal

lean meat, plenty of greens, cheese, nuts, 2 fruits a day

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 forrestina

so you eat this for one month then you move on to the browns??

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 socalgal

exactly, but i have no idea about sugar. i should try to eliminate it completely.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 forrestina

i sa oprah show on her diet screts etc and i think she said she doesn't eat anything with sugar in it. she uses splenda.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 socalgal

right. which isn't that big of a deal to switch over to. the stinky thing tho is like condiments and things like that-everything has sugar in it.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 forrestina

oh yeah. i've already lowered my intake of sugar to nothing over 5 grams of sugar in it per serving.....means i had to stay away from ketchup.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 socalgal

that is my ultimate sadness.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 forrestina

i was shocked to learn how much sugar it has in it. if you find an alternate and it tastes yummy, let me know and vice versa.

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001 socalgal

I had to google that for you:

http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/5/Sugar_Free_Ketchup6698.shtml

Lemme know if it's good; I might switch too.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 web-toedchloe

thanks. i use ketchup in a lot of things. this will be a small, but effective way for me to make a change.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

its tough figuring out what has "white" in it. like rice, flours.....sugars....etc.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

i think my body would go in shock. but cold turkey is the best way to go. i admire you for it!!!

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

hopefully you'll be able to admire me for a long time haha

originalsnob #13 originalsnobOG 2004

My grandmother needs to lower her salt intake and lower her cholesterol . There are a lot of diets that claim they're form the AHA (American Heart Association) but, they end up being phonies. Anyone know of some diets that actually ARE from the AHA??? Thanx ;-)

specialk #12 specialkOG 2003

The past week and a half I've been on a "soup diet".......mainly because that's all I can eat because my jaw hurts to much to stuff a big juicy cheeseburger into my mouth......but one day.......*drool*

1010100111 hack the fat simulator. i wouldnt get the gym mod it's kind of boring, hack the fat, then put in a karate mod or like the flying mod it's fun 10101011111

forrestina #10 forrestinaOG 2002

Day 4 of South Beach. I cheated yesterday and didn't even know it. No more ketchup. =( What am I going to do when I'm poor and only have the ingredients for a ketchup sandwhich?? I should really buy a cookbook or something, but that costs $$. Being poor and dieting basically means starving.

originalsnob #10.1 originalsnobOG 2004

My grands had the South Beach Diet book...if you ever want something from it I can prolly scan & send it to ya.

forrestina #10.1.1 forrestinaOG 2002

ha is there a south beach for vegetarians? i've been eating meat and getting sick.

originalsnob #10.1.1.1 originalsnobOG 2004

where have you been storing your meat...did you get your 'fridge yet? Maybe you can cutback from hardcore meat like beef and prok to just chicken and fish for a little.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

im not storing. no fridge yet. only eating out. and no beef right now in the 1st phase. i wont eat pork ever. and fish makes me itchy.

I don't believe in diets. They are against my religion.

juicymango #8 juicymangoOG 2003

I never really thought about this until yesterday.. haha.. but there really is some truth to the point of not eating animal meat like from cows, piggies and chickens... because it really is sad that they are pumped full of hormones and live their lives out in a small crate. On the other hand, a deer, or a fishy, or a shreemp, gets to live out its life in nice natural surroundings... they get to run around, swim around, play dodgeball if they so choose. And then, BAM they are on my plate. But ya don't feel as bad eating them, cos at least they got to live out their lives in happy-go-lucky animal world, untouched by machines and junk. Weeee!

ilikebirds #8.1 ilikebirdsOG 2002

nah yo.. thats mad evil kid.. cause.. that animal now knows what it's missing out on.. one day it's all free.. milking each other and stuff.. then bam! hooked by hook, shot with an arrow.. and they get all confused.. and die and stuff.. but the animals in cages are all like " ohh look at mee i'm so cute in my little box world.. weeee. i'm going to grow up and die and make one delicious meal and then i'm gonna become poo" you feel my logic there son

ilikebirds #7 ilikebirdsOG 2002

I dont know.. Not to offend anyone . but i think diets are just a waste. and i hate them. food is so good... i couldn't ever.. just stop eating something i liked.. or loved... i'm getting fat but thats because i eat.. then sit and watch tv or sleep.. but once i hit the gym life is good again...maybe thats just me..

juicymango #7.1 juicymangoOG 2003

I'M SO OFFENDED!!! haha. Yeah i agree. I never dieted EVER before but sometimes it helps .. to get you going and get the first few pounds off. I duno. Exercise definitely works better though! And dieting alone doesn't really do much in the long run.

ilikebirds #7.1.1 ilikebirdsOG 2002 funny

yo whatever. you should be offended

thatdarngirl #6 thatdarngirlOG 2002

My real diet that I went on sophmore year in HighSchool, and went from a bit chubby to the little person I am resembles Mel's a bit:
-Eat frenchfries and a bagel for lunch every day. If you're not too hungry, skip the bagel.
-Come home and eat all the pretzles in sight (honeywheet pretzles are especially yummy)
-Pickles..lots of them
-Two helpings of everything at dinner (at least) to help you become a growing girl.
-Ice cream..at least 3 huge scoops, with chocolate syrup.
-Doritos and cheesey puffs whenever they are attainable.

juicymango #6.1 juicymangoOG 2003

yeah that sounds about the same as my diet in high school. My health teacher thought I was anorexic I was so skinny. And then suddenly before I knew it I was 22 and I started to retain everything I eat. hahaha. Rough.

thatdarngirl #6.1.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Yeah, I get kind of worried about that. I'm almost 19..and I'm still doing really good, but I don't want to be fat again.

juicymango #6.1.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

Yeah I'm a "workout nut" and the funny thing is... in the past 4 years or so that I've been working out pretty regularly, I GAINED about 10 pounds. Most of it is muscle I guess, but still. It's annoying. And I know a lot of girls who had the same thing happen. However... Atkins got me back to my "after-high-school" weight pretty much... I'm happy with that.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Everyone tells me I should gain some muscles, because while I don't have too much fat..I really don't have anything else. But..with muscles comes the higher numbers, and we're definetly conditioned to not like bigger weight numbers even if it's from muscles and not fat.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

Yeah, and that's really annoying. Cos you can be a lean 130 and look skinnier/better than someone who's 120 and has no muscle.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Yeah definetly! But if asked which weight you would prefer most people would go for 120 without a doubt.

tinser tinserOG 2002

weight is so annoying...i'm still waiting for the day when people don't care what weight you are

ophelia opheliaOG 2003

haha, what're you complaining about

tinser tinserOG 2002 ophelia

haha, well....what if people decide fat is in? I've got a problem then...and so do you...but really, so many people tell me i'm too skinny...and i don't like it...i like the way i am....so there

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 tinser

Yeah, that's the spirit!!..I like the way you am too!!!....

(Grammar, who needs it)

ophelia #6.2 opheliaOG 2003

yo, how in the world is that a diet?...glad it worked for ya but it's just strange cause it doesn't look like a diet....then again, I'm no nutritionist

thatdarngirl #6.2.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

I ate less then I burned therefor burning off extra fat? Sure..I ate a lot of high carb stuff but I was 15 at the time, so my body was burning stuff off mad quick.

yodasucka #5 yodasuckaOG 2003

The Melody Diet (you all need to take good notes cuz i will only say this once)
-Eat PLENTY of ice cream... this is important because ice cream is the best ever
-Pretzels... any kind really, soft pretzels are great... but if ur going to eat the sour dough ones... they must be eaten with your ice cream
-Bagels, now i kno many of you will say 'those are too fattening', but don't worry, if u smother your bagel in cream cheese, it makes it better
-Vanilla Milk Shakes... these are a must for those late night diner trips...

I do believe that is it, maybe in time this diet will be updated-but for now just follow it as is

forrestina #5.1 forrestinaOG 2002

what are for snacks...LS??

yodasucka #5.1.1 yodasuckaOG 2003

i'm so pro atkins. my and mom do it together and its a race who can beat eachother to our one goal weight. i'm winning though!! but she's my hereo cuz she's lost about 150 lbs on it.

thatdarngirl #4.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Yeah but you guys really don't do it the right way do you?

malibu #4.1.1 malibuOG 2001

actually we do because we follow the guidelines set forth in the book.-

forrestina #3 forrestinaOG 2002

I'm not really dieting, but I gave up meat a few months ago.

tinser #3.1 tinserOG 2002

so you're a vegetarian?

forrestina #3.1.1 forrestinaOG 2002

well ive had shrimp twice, but yes. me having shrimp is not such a good idea i think im allergic to seafood.

juicymango #3.1.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

I did that for a while, probably like.. a little over a year, I had almost no meat, no red meat at least. And then I moved to PA, and I could NOT stop eating deer meat and burgers and such. Especially after a LONG workout at the gym, a nice plate of venison hit the spot. Mmmmmm.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

meat is good. i miss it, but i won't eat it. maybe one day i will-who knows...

tinser tinserOG 2002

is it for animal protection reasons?

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

that's part of it i suppose-it's not how Jehovah intended animals to be pumped full of hormones and jammed together in a pen.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

hmm i saw them doing the same thing at walkill, maybe that is how it was intended...hahah i'm kidding

tinser tinserOG 2002

true...i can't even argue on this though...because i know i'll get too worked up...i'm very pro-meat...jahanna knows the deal

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

ehhh i gotta say, bringing Jehovah and his intentions into it is a little ... iffy?

tinser tinserOG 2002 juicymango

wait, you replied to me...but that's not my arguement...i just need that cleared up, haha

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 tinser

yeah, i meant that like, i'm pro-meat, so i agree with you, and ... blah. haha

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 tinser

So do I!! It's great and yummy

tinser tinserOG 2002 thatdarngirl

we should all go out for a steak together....i always get mine medium rare..and then i call jahanna and gross her out...because she hates that

tesoro tesoroOG 2001 tinser

haha...yea...the text msgs are extra enjoyable.."i'm eating a medium rare steak with red juice oozing out" groooooooooooooss

"after years of sucking down cow i've decided to swear off meat"

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 tinser

I always order things medium rare..until my traumatizing experience at OutBack Steakhouse. I ordered my hamburger medium rare, my boyfriend said that was gross, and the lady said they could only do medium. Fine whatever. I get the hamburger and it was bleeding..like not just juice, it was definetly blood.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 tinser

yeah, courtney, chill w/that...Although I'm an extreme fan of the cooked flesh, I definately prefer that it be fully cooked...ICK...WELL DONE IS THE BEST FOR YOUR TUM..& when you deviate from that rule & eat practically raw meat, that there's how you contract the ebola virus..or something

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ophelia

eww well done is gross.. thats not how meat is suppose to be eaten.. look at the kings of the jungle.. lions tearing at about need.. nice and sweeetttt with the natural juices... medium.. to medium rare is where to go.. it's soooooooooooooooooooooooo good

tinser tinserOG 2002 ilikebirds

yummy, your illustration made my mouth water

tinser tinserOG 2002 ophelia

noooo way, well done is sick...you gotta have it red...so its really juicey!

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 tinser

if only ezabel offered barf bags

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ophelia

RARE meat is GROSS. make mine medium! fully cooked on the outside and a lil pinkish and gooey on the interior.

tesoro tesoroOG 2001 fivezero

the fact that you even used the word "gooey" in your comment should hint that it is NOT APPROPRIATE! blaah, this thread is making me ill..but i cant stop reading it! it's like the surgerys on the discovery channel..it grosses you out but you have to watch.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 tesoro

one time one of my friends was on that! she got a special surgery on her stomach that was also bloodless, so they put her whole operation on TV...my dad said he saw it..imagine, 2 AM, you can't sleep, the only thing interesting on is your friend's stomach surgery.

tinser tinserOG 2002 tesoro

red meat, dripping with juicey perfection!!!

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 fivezero

I don't think meat is supposed to be gooey..ever.

tinser tinserOG 2002 thatdarngirl

yeah, if it is, i think you'll be taking a visit to the local hospital that night

tinser #2 tinserOG 2002

The Courtney Diet: Eat when you want to eat, don't eat when you don't want to. Eat what you want to eat, and some of what you don't want to. And...if you have the choice between taking the stairs and the elevator...take the stairs. That's my diet in a nutshell. Works for me.

thatdarngirl #2.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Mine is similar..only it's take the elevator.

tinser #2.1.1 tinserOG 2002

see, i have this theory about stairs. almost all my classes are on the third level of different buildings at school, so when i first started, i would get winded going up 3 levels...but now, i don't get winded anymore. So my theory is, that i'm building up my muscles...soon i'll be able to run the nyc marathon.

thatdarngirl #2.1.1.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Most of my classes don't require stairs..but there's this hill I walk up at least twice a day now. I still get all disgruntled about it, but eventually I think it will improve my health.

thatdarngirl #1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

I'm so anti-atkins because so few people actually do the actual real diet. They do a fake version that will probably do serious harm to their body.

juicymango #1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

Yep, I totaly agree!! I keep hearing horror stories of people who ate no fruits or vegetables for six months and then they have a heart attack. MORONS!

tinser #1.2 tinserOG 2002

i think the zone diet is a good one...never tried it....but i've heard of people who did and who liked it
