Hawaiian Luau

forrestina by forrestinaOG 2002 · May 5, 2004 · 126 views

Next weekend I'm going to a Bachelorette party with the theme of Hawaiian Luau. The bride to be and groom to be will be honeymooning in Hawaii. I was assigned to make the meat portion of the meal. What a funny assignment for a flexitarian! Anyway, I was thinking coconut chicken on skewers. I need to do like some marinated grilled stuff. I need suggestions.

The kids were so great and easy to please. The youngest boy Jesse said, "This party is so cool." and his sister Lily said, "I never knew a luau would be fun."

you should make skewered hawaiians, and hawaiian punch.

I revived it with some new ideas. I wonder if I can import Hawaiians. I've got plenty of skewers....

ha! I'm not a flexitarian anymore. Despite persistent efforts, I have yet to be reindoctrinated in vegetarianism by the large portion of my congregation that are vegetarians. I AM throwing a Luau next weekend for the families in my congregation with young kids. Food ideas so far: pineapple stuffing, banana bread/muffins with macadamia nuts, coconut shrimp, apricot salad with almonds and raisins, sweet and sour chicken, brown rice, mango or papaya salsa, guava jelly. A guest is preparing poi for me. Any other ideas? Preferably vegetarian. My mind automatically goes to pork, but so few of the guests will eat it that it's not worth it.

ha read this when you were hungry? it's a far ride for a backyard party.

malibu #7.1.1.1 malibuOG 2001

true true. it just sounds like a good time. how far away are you again?

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

from you? probably 3.5 hours. exit 7 off the turnpike and it's another hour or so from there.

malibu malibuOG 2001

negative son. you were correct, too far away. but we do have to get together soon. and your party does sound like good times and mighty delicious.

no mangos or papyas-not from hawaii. and instead of brown rice, i'm going to learn how to make coconut rice.

You know I was just thinking it would be hot to chop open a fresh coconut and gut it out. Then at the bottom you can sort of chop it down nice and flat. Then use it as a cup to serve pina colodas :)

perrin #3 perrinOG 2004

What is a flexitarian?

forrestina #3.1 forrestinaOG 2002

it's me. i'm vegetarian but if someone makes meat and i think they'll be offended that i don't eat it...i eat it. and then i get sick afterwards. sometimes i even eat it when i crave it-i just always get sick afterwards.

perrin #3.1.1 perrinOG 2004

Oh interesting did you come up with that designation yourself? lol

forrestina #3.1.1.1 forrestinaOG 2002

no other people use this terminology as well

perrin perrinOG 2004

Oh ok I've just never heard it before I'll have to remember that.

forrestina #2 forrestinaOG 2002

socalgal #1 socalgalOG 2003

rice.....you always need white rice for a luau and some furagaki (sp?) it's crushed seaweed and it's SO tasty on steamed white rice

socalgal #1.1 socalgalOG 2003
