Books vs. Movies
I know most everyone in here loves to read... my hat is off to you.. I want this thread to talk about movies made from books, and books made from movies.
I've never been a huge reader, but I'm proud to say I've always been a Huge movie watcher. I really like LOTR I wish I'd sit and read them, but from what I hear The movies have been right on. So I pretty much read those books.
Can you think of other examples?

Ok I ask myself...WHY ARE THEY MAKING ANOTHER HARRY POTTER MOVIE? WHY? I MEAN ITS ANNOYING... ITS A TRILOGY NOW??? COME ON!!! 3 HARRY POTTER MOVIES IS JUST A WASTE OF FILM. I WISH THEY WOULD JUST CAST A SPELL ON HIM SO HE NEVER COMES BACK. I AM SICK OF SEEING THAT STUPID LITTLE BOY WHO THINKS HES A WITCH RETURN ONCE A YEAR FOR CHRISTMAS. I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE A BOOK AND MOVIE BURNING.
Easy. I'm pretty sure it's not a trilogy in the sense that Star Wars was or that LOTR is. The lady wrote a series of books about the stupid kid so now they (they being the movie producers) are making a series of movies. Do you see the connection? Series of books=series of movies.
get this......... there is going to be 7(SEVEN) harry potter movies. i kid you not!! there are 7 books and they are planning on making all 7 into movies.
I think that lady needs to quit writing those books. Then thye'll stop making the movies.
This may sound juvenile, but The Cat in the Hat movie plucks my nerves (the live action one that just came out). Total deviation from Suess.
you saw it?
i saw it.. and i LOVED it... but i was the only one haha
yeah at least i only paid 5.50 for it
that's what happens when you turn a book with less than 100 words into a 90 minute movie
they had to add 45527 fart jokes to make it work.
well dakota fanning was perfect for her role.
exceptional talent, tacky execution
Yeah, that is something to consider (and at the risk of being nauseating, I think it has 225 words). But while we're on the subject, did anyone see the animated cat in the hat movie in the 80's? - I saw it again recently with some toddlers and it brought back all the memories of being 7. I love that one.
I have absolutely no desire to see this movie. The commercials make me feel embarrassed for Mike Myers.
AHAHAHA! me too! and that chubby kid who i think is a great actor!
Yeah, those kids are exceptional actors, even in other roles.
it just makes me soooo mad that there is a live action movie. this is not how it is. and all computerized and stuff?? the magic of thing 1 and thing 2 cannot be replicated by a computer.
sure it can. and when you die, YOU will be replicated by computer.
Timeline opens today
I can't believe that I just found out about that movie yesterday. I so have to see that.
yeah, man! a crichton concept and the legendary richard donner is directing. i kinda like paul walker. and i dig david thewlis, who was genius in gangster no1. i imagine he's plays one of the higher ups in the medevil world since he's english. can't wait.
paul walker can't act for beans. he talks like a burned out surfer dude type. he is my only reservation about seeing the movie, i can't take him seriously.
anyone ever see "meet the deedles" ... haha, such a gay movie but kinda funny
A book is bad if you see the movie first, but if you read a book then the movie is bad Tat is all I have to say
I used to think the same thing, and there is some truth in that (like songs, whichever version you hear first you like more).
But I've read books after the fact many times, and seen movies second (of course) and if you are a type of person who gets absorbed into whatever you are indulging at that moment, it will vary, and sometimes you will appreciate both for what they are separately. I read Sense and Sensibility and About a Boy after watching the movies, and both have significant differences, but I felt in both, the director kept to the spirit of the book, and never changed the moral, or relationships. Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite moveis of all time.
i was very perturbed by how they made Count of Monte Cristo & Man in the Iron Mask. Neither of them were like the book at all. Same characters and vaguely similar story line, but the movie versions completely ruined them! it mad me very mad. they are classics for a reason! why mess with greatness?
Who on God's green earth told you that the LoTR movies have been right on?!? Fellowship followed the structure of the first book fairly well, but it skipped a lot of the details that make the books interesting. T2T, however, was an absolute travesty that ignored major plot points in the books and rearranged a large part of the story.
Yeah..but you got to think of how hard it is to cram all that amazing stuff into a movie. You can't show everything, some things just aren't transferable from written word to a movie. I am not a big fan of Two Towers movie, but it could have been a lot worse. As far as books being made into movies go, it's a lot better then some other ones.
Actually, now that I reread what I wrote, it comes of a bit stronger than I intended it. I just remember watching T2T and liking it, then going back to reread the books and being blown away by how much better they were than the movies.
Yeah, I'm re-reading the books right now, whenever I have a few minutes, and the differences are really striking. But, what I've seen from the next movies trailers..it looks like they included a lot of major things that I was afraid they were going to leave out.
I haven't seen any of the trailers yet. Do you know if they included the stuff about Saruman's destroying the Shire, and the hobbits return to clean it up? I thought that that part of Return of the King was at least as important as the rest since it really drove home the books' message about how war has an incredibly destructive influence on the Earth. Of course, considering that the movie-makers probably just want to have an action movie, they probably won't include that, but it's nice to dream.
Well, the thing is the director is a tolkien-lover. Seeing as how important the raising of the shire is I would hope that they include that. However, they didn't show any of that in the trailer. I'm hoping that means they don't think it's exciting enough or they don't want to ruin the ending because it's not totally expected. I really hope they include that because it really is key to the whole series, and it definetly makes me cry.
Ahhahahahahahaha
What are you laughing at?
the lottery-sick story, sicker movie.
we read and then watched that in junior high. except my teacher only made us watch it cus she said dan cortese was hot. we also did the same thing with the outsiders for the hot guys.
Oh I love the outsiders so much.
Let's do it for Johnny, man. We're gonna do for Johnny!
Mommy Dearest by Christian Crawford---shes (actress Joan Crawford) MUCH meaner in the book, it goes into so much more detail. OMG it should be required reading for all kids who think they have such strict mean parents!
yea, i think i started reading this but never finished..crazy book.
I heard there's a movie of Franz Kafka's "The Trial" directed by Orson Welles. how cool is that? gotta find it and rent it.
and then watch it, don't forget about watching it too!
ok so that's:
1)find it
2)rent it
3)watch it
4)kill ok4now for being a wise-butt
5)eat cheesy poofs
6)return it
see now, ur mixing reality with fantasy. ur obviously living in a fantasy since you used my nick. i'll sleep well tonite.
Anybody a fan of Myst?..Probably my favorite electronic game of all time, & I heard somewhere that they're making a movie out of it...I also heard that Brad Pitt & his wife Jennifer Aniston bought the rights to Willie Wonka & are going to do a remake of it or something along those lines...THAT will be awesome..they have a lot to live up to, the better now screw it up...
i dont remember which one we have myst or riven...we might have both
myst was pretty cool. i liked it. never played the sequels tho.
Not sure if Jenn and Brad (we're on a first name basis) are doing Wonka..but someone definetly is, and Tim Burton is supposed to direct it?
yeah, I don't think they're directing it or anything, or even staring in it..But I read someplace that they bought the rights to it so they can pick whatever directer they wanted - & yeah I heard something about it being a darder version, so, Tim Burton would make sense
yea, myst is pretty cool, we have riven too...myst always freaked me out...especially that part where there's the eletric cell and you can open the box and there's a head in it. sick!
i didn't hear anything about Brad Pitt and Jen Aniston owning the rights. sounds silly. but i don'tm know. i do know Tim Burton is attached as the director and that Johnny Depp is a front-runner for the part of Willy Wonka. it's almost a sure bet. check out the new Entertainment Weekly. they discuss it a bit. personally--i want Haley Joel Osment as Charlie and Cristopher Walken as his Grandpa. and tons of CGI duplicated skateboarding Wee-men [from Jackass] as the oompa-loompas! any other cast suggestions?!
i LOVE myst! i heard rumors of a movie too. curious as to how that would work out seeing as there are no people in it til the end.
I read Jaws and The Shineing waaaaay back in the day and they were pretty close to the book. I love to read, and I'm gonna read Returen of the King (LOTR) so I can understand whats goin on in the movie better, when it comes out.
new movie coming out--The Matchstick Men. amazing book with a twist ending. just wanna reccommend it cuz if it's as good as the book, it'll be amazing.
here's something cool: the director who did matchstick men is the director who did Bladerunner. wow. i wanna see matchstick men. i like the director, Ridley Scott. i like nic cage. i like sam rockwell. good formula.
i really wanted to see sam rockwell in that movie with drew barrymore based on book from a real persons life. "confessions of a dangerous mind: i think. but alas it recieved the R
don't get me started. i wanted to see that really bad. clooney directed it. sam rockwell is amazing. drew barrymore is adorable. julia roberts is a great actress. great components. it'll be on tv in a few years.
i know~!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am dying with the wait. such anticipation.
The Lost World- Micheal Crichton.....one of the most amazing books ever...movie....sucks sucks sucks...ugh, makes me want to vomit...jurassic park...also better as a book...but not bad as a movie...
and timeline is coming out in november, so we'll have to see...but the book was amazing. I'd definitely recommend it.
And btw, Prey...the newest one, is awesome too
Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is a very good adaptation in my opinion. The characters are very true and all the major elements of the plot survive. I guess making it a five hour long movie helped a lot as well. I also think masterpiece theater does a good job of adapting books to movies.
Blade Runner : Do androids dream... , movie wasn't bad.. book by Phillip K dick.
yeah, dude. i read that book in high school and it definitely owned. but the movie is majorly good too. ridley scott is an amazing director and how can you deny harrison ford? in the directors cut of the movie ridley scott eludes to Deckerd being a replicant. good stuff. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was the whole title. i always thought that was cool.
yea k dick is good people.
Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, AWESOME book..ahead of it's time too...side note - Tom Morello's first band was called Electric Sheep, named after this book of course
is that the one with harrison ford?
i'm sad you didn't read my post, tinser. yes, harrison ford is in it.
haha, i'm so sorry...i skimmed through it...not catching harrison's name...but this time around i read the whole thing...i saw the directors cut too...sweet movie
just so you know, bran, the LOTR movies have been decent translations of the books, but the books do have much more in them. Even if you watch the movies, reading the books would offer more insight, and would add new understanding.
Vanessa Porrino and I were having a heated discussion about To Kill a Mockingbird, my favorite book. I personally love the movie. I think it is cinamatically? beautiful and sticks exactly to the book as far as I can remember.
I loved the book and the movie, but I can't bear to read or watch them anymore. They're just far too emotionally draining.
With any movie, you have to cut, unless you make it some epic trilogy. But I think they did a good job of sticking to the sprit of the book. They didn't do anything like make Aticus fall in love with that lady across the street or something crazy like that. I like them both. Although I haven't seen or read either in a while.
EEp! The movies are definetly not right on. Like, for movies based on books, it could have been worse, but Peter Jackson did a lot of tampering to make it 'better'. Of course you won't get the same detail but he altered some important characters personalities (Faramir..like..the best character in the book next to Aragorn and made into such a semi-bad guy). He just took out things so it wouldn't be 5 hours long, but then he added stuff that wasn't in the book which is odd.
