Need help on music choices for the kids
Hi guys,
Since I'm a new "dad", I need help. My 12 year old step-son is getting into different bands and I need some help with some bands he has expressed interest in. Need to know if any of these groups are okay:
Rancid
Poison and Well
Rage Against the Machine (I've heard of them, but not sure what they're about. I think they are very political and, um, loud... but are they appropriate?)
Also, with Good Charlotte... what does their little slogan "MADE" mean? Any meaning?
Fortunately, Ryan (my step-son) is into The Beatles! So is my other son, Travis! I was able to pass that along, fortunately!
Thanks guys!

alright, first off, Poison the well--like alota "emo/hardcore", it sounds harsh..the way the vocals are delivered makes people who aren't really learned on "heavy" music think that the lyrics might be questionable(some are scared of screaming)....but take a peek at this excerpt & judge for yourself
Band: Poison The Well
Song: Nerdy
"...Why, do your eyes paralize me
What, makes me feel this way
Just carry me away with silence and heartbeats
As rapid thinking about your embrace
and how it makes me feel
I just want to feel this way forever
Sleep on portraits painted as perfect as you
Why have I been given the chance to fly
When I'm not with you I feel lesser alone
I remember your face / imprinted on angels
Your voice as beautiful / as the sounds of waves
crashing against my heart
Time slows down when you look at me
I'm infatuated with this / infatuated with you
It's so hard for me to understand why
I hadn't found you before don't dull away
hold my hand..."
i didn't read through everyone's comments...i just scanned...but i don't think anyone answered the made question.
MADE is the guys in the band clothing company...don't know what it stands for though, i think its just what they decided to call it. i'm thinking its pretty safe though.
ohhhh, it wasn't even THAT far down. but i said that MADE is a mafia term for "looked after" and/or "fincially stable." good charlotte uses it to illustrate the fact that they've MADE it. herbs.
hahah, isn't this the second time i've done this to you? sorry
queens of the stone age they are good
THIS WHOLE FORUM WAS HISTERICAL!!
The whole Rob Zombie thing Oh MAN I cracked up!
Kids will listen to what they want, wether you want them to or not, so its a jungle out there, just plaster kingdom melodies in to there head, SYKE.
Just get him into every kind of music there possibly is, & mostly music you make up yourself, cause good times will be had by all always..
and let the woman flow like the samon of capistrano ( DUmb & dumber, juuussttt incase it wasn't apparent)
Skye who? The music selection thing is levelling off.. he's getting known as the Beatle guy in school...
my condolences. how's he handling it?
ok, first tell Ryan to try to get into 50 Cent and maybe Eminem.... then you'll be straight.... peace
how about Rob Zombie? now hes a fine young man...hehe
hes hot too, really!
ewww nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE tell me you're joking...
If he's interested in Rancid maybe get him to listen to the Ramones?
UBL.com and lyrics.com, thats where i did my research. helped me more then them b/c they're gonna listen to the music anyway, away from home.
Wow, the one thing I learned being in a stepfamily: A stepparent should never administer discipline, just support the natural parent. You can't even fathom how much resentment this will cause your stepchildren later in life. Seriously, it's more important than you can imagine. There have been not only WT & Awake articles about this, but also worldy psychology sources that all add up to the fact that you can't expect a child to obey a stranger wholeheartedly; no matter his age, how much he likes the parent or how correct the parent is. You know what kind of trouble I've had with this, Dave. Just think about it.
Yeah, Di, I was a step-kid a few times myself. The cool thing about these kids is that they are receptive. Trish is the one who disciplines, but they are interested and responsive to my input on stuff. Ryan knows I have a good insight on music and entertainment, so he respects my thoughts, as well as the thoughts of the friends. I'm actually going to have him read these comments, rather than tell him what was said... letting him see what other brothers and sisters themselves say about these bands!
receptive for only a few more years. I'm not being negative, I'm a realist. one of the most spiritual families I know has had 2 really *good* kids publicly reproved and one privately. the dad had to step down as an elder. kids get into puberty and bang they seem to become aleins from another planet.
the beatles...are something you should monitor your kids listening to VERY closely. they took a lot of drugs, back in the day. also, they were long hair hippies. and one of them, i think his name was john, married some hippie drug taking witch called yoko. and they did more drugs, and slept in bed naked for a week in protest of something. and also, he wrote "woman", which is a really good song. so, watch out for the beatles.
Yeah yeah yeah.. I know... I don't think they were in bed NAKED for the week, though... they also were drug free by early 1968. Trust me, I'm an authority on the Fab Four, so I can pretty much keep 'em informed on them..
i could be wrong dave but i think dan's making a point that you have to be cautious about everything. you can't really go making excuses for one artist and then not for another. every person will have a vice or something wrong that would give reason not to listen to them. 1 they are imperfect and 2 they are worldly. it's all up to you...
you know what, forreste. that is all true, except for kingdom melodies.
kingdom melodies are emo
no they're SOO not. the pink songbook was emo. this one isn't.
you got me there. i digress . . . this new one is mostly emU, then
What is this pink book you speak of and why can't I remember it?
serious?? it's the old songbook
i remember it being softcover. i think from now, we should refer to theocratic books like you stupid people do for weezer albums...blue (young people ask), green (old school bibles), pink (old songbook), and beige (isaiah 1, isaiah 2, daniel, ect.)
i have one at home. i also have a "clown nose" red Bible
Oh SNAP! You did not just go there! Hope you have tons of fun @ the sing-along Dash show...don't forget to bring something for show-and-tell...
yeah, you don't remember it? it was actually magenta, I think.
Not at all...when was it around? Maybe I was really little or something?
It was used from 1966 to 1984... when the current "Sing Praises" songbook was released!
Well! There's the problem. I wasn't alive until 1985.
i don't remember the pink one either. but the chocolatey-brown one sure is emo. er, i mean emu.
haha that ain't chocolate
it just seemed so wrong to use "dookie" in that connotation...
it's kinda woodish!
do u remember the KELLY GReEN bible?????
i think my mom still has one. we have a lot of ancient dusty books lol
I used to have a BRAND NEW Green Bible . . . but then I let this homeless boy use it . . . and alas . . . it is no longer new . . . matter of fact, I think he stole it . . .
was his name michael r. schiano?
whats the R for buddy!?
retard. what else. ghettobooty starts with a "G"
ahhh good point...
i know who it is and i'm sad to say he appreciated it none. because it ended up at my house for a time..
The one with sea monsters in the front cover.
the hawaiian song SO isn't emo
well that's a given so i didn't say it
Yeah, but I have mentioned several times before that I am very objective, even with the Beatles. You turned me onto Oasis, yet we both know what those crazy Gallagher brothers are like!
The Beatles turned out some really awesome drug induced music, but I'm not patterning my life after that. Some bands and performers (okay.. a lot of bands and performers) advocate hate, racism, murder and Satanism in their music, past and present. I don't condone that, whether it's a rapper or a classic Rolling Stones album. Trish and I don't want to expose these kids in our care to really blatant stuff like that.
BTW, the "yeah yeah yeah" I began my reply to Dan with was a Beatle reference (She loves you.. yeah yeah yeah)
;-) Thanks, kiddo!
bro, if you want to keep those kids in line, keep them away from the pop crap you see so much of out there! MADE is a mafia term for "looked after and fincially stable" get them into cat stevens, paul simon and art garfunkel, MC5 and...paul oakenfold! with a little queens of the stone age on the side, flaming lips, fischerspooner, most weezer is good, piebald is good, black keys, white stripes, postal service, select bright eyes tracks andddd the strokes are decent, enon is good, um yeah
yo. the strokes are HORRIBLE..dont' tell him that. also, simon and garfunkel rule.
dan, the strokes are amazing and rancid is horrible. i'm sorry if you got that mixed up. rancid are just has-beens cashing in. AND JOSH HOMME STOLE THE LEAD SINGERS WIFE! LOSER!
Rage is definitely very political, and they also have extremely bad language. The music is awesome, but the content is questionable.
ok... a couple things. RANCID are AWESOME. they are all recovering alcoholics with kids and stuff. so they aren't so crazy. and Good Charlotte..their first album is so ground breaking..(for cheezy radio punk) that even now, it's still fun...the other bands..rage..i've never heard. but they did a concert here in NJ a few years ago supporting a local cop killer...which was messed up. they didn't do well with that.
