ATTENTION SPAN FOR GOOD MUSIC??

We have many kinds of music on the radio these days, all variety types...its endless. Pop, rock,
r&b, jazz, emo, punk, classic rock, etc, etc. Every so often though, great songwriters, and bands come out with just truly unbelieveable music. And even though for some, they don't get radio play; yet the talent (or writing ability to reach a nerve) is sooo good to listen to, that you just have to take a break from the every day radio garbage (bands like Nickleback, Creed, most pop music, and many others) and give a listen to some really remarkable musicians and bands that may have slipped by our noticing them. To mention just a few that I think meet this description are - Howie Day, Elliot Smith, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, (early)Vertical Horizon, John Mayer, Nora Jones, the Pat McGee Band, the Bluetones, and several others. I think punk music (tho some is decent) in general, is way overrated. "Everybody's listening to it." Who cares! You need absolutely no attention span for that, I mean, where's the talent, or the 'greatness' in the music. Not there. You want great music (other than what I listed)...how 'bout the Dave Matthews Band, Live, the Beatles, Zepplin, Van Morrisson, to mention just some. And there a handfull of ok pop/rock groups out there, like Jamiroquai, Jason Mraz, Taxirde, Splender, Dashboard Confesh, etc. No one set of music is better than another. But...for a lot of people - grow up! That 'garbage' doesn't matter.
Just a few thoughts to think about.

there is a lot of punk music that has greatness in it. i know a lot of the punk bands out there are stupid, but there are stupid bands in EVERY GENRE OF MUSIC!! strung out, no use for a name, millencolin, thrice, boy sets fire... dude, these bands are musically talented, and have meaningful lyrics. its all about taste

One very talented group of guys that got very little radioplay for only1 song of theirs was Sensefield. Tonight and Forever is an excellent cd, a mix of so much variety in sound, style, and harmonies. Another group to add to the ever-growing 'rarely heard/great music' list. Check'm out. If anyone has heard some of their real early stuff, please let me know...I'm interested to know what kind of sound they had back then.

it makes me sad when people read an "essentials" list in a magazine and then force themselves to listen and like those bands and groups, just because someone said to. take a chance on a band no ones heard of. so many times i've found amazing, inventive and unique music by taking a chance!

Definition of a cheap rock band. They use a Mapex drum set with 2 cheap cymbals by Sabian. They have a Squier guitar with a 20 watt amp. And a 30 Watt bass amp for the 4 string bass guitar made by Carlo Robelli.

whats the relevance here?

well the pop punk stuff sucks, but there are tons of great punk bands that make amazing music behind the scenes.

Exactly...I mean - there is too much "nonsense" music out there that people give credit to. Its a waste of time, the majority of it. People need to widen out in their tastes, and who cares if its not what everybody else in your immediate group of friends is listening to. Don't be disheartened, plus you show at least to some degree, that you're more mature as an individual (especially as a Witness/not an "on the fringes" Witness, like some are). Music isn't the most important thing in life, obviously, and once people realize that their life shouldn't revolve around it, then it can, and should be enjoyed.

fivezero #1.1.1 fivezeroOG 2003

i agree.

me too, sometimes we get SO bent outta shape cause one person doesnt like the bands we do. I do that to my kids sumtimes, but there is alot of junk that people give legitamacy to b/c they have *the look* or *the sound* .
No names please.

Yeah! I get bored with people who can only talk about the music they hate. I am very glad that you are able to make your own personal choices regarding music, don't impose those choices upon me. Let people listen to what they want to and stop whining (yes, it sounds like whining to me)about what's good and what's junk. We aren't supposed to like the same stuff.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

we're just trying to SAVE you from bad music!

T

listen, i don't want to warn you again.

Very true statement...I also get bored by people talking about music they hate, and imposing their style as if it were the only and best. I think what the jist of this discussion is about is not to impose, but rather to open up/take a fresh look at music. Why is it you like what you like, and am I just "going with the flo." Most do. How 'bout - step back and see.
toxicgirl, if your comment was directed at jkjava personally, then what you refer to as whining is ridiculous. Why? Well, you said - "we aren't supposed to like the same stuff." Sure everyone has different tastes, but, why not? You don't sound open to anything. Sounds like you're the one doing the whining. Regardless, someone to add to the "list" of rarely heard, but great performers/musicians/groups is Damien Rice. The guy, and his band have an absolutely awesome ensemble (guitar, cello, percussion) of sounds and talents. Again tho...an attention span might be needed.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

I think you seriously misunderstood what toxicgirl was saying. Her comment wasn't aimed at who she was replying to but she was speaking in general to people who like to whine. And how you assumed that she sounds like she's "not open to anything" I can't even begin to imagine..but you know what my father says about assuming things.

It makes you look dumb.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003

Amen sister, nicely said. My comment wasn't directed to any one person.

J
jkjavaOG 2003

Thanx for clearing that up for me, about my seriously misunderstanding toxicgirl, as well as letting me know what your father says about people who assume things. I really needed to hear that drivel. I guess then, your assuming that I dislike her...which would be wrong. Likewise, I don't dislike you. Its a discussion about music, and you telling me - I look dumb, is about as senseless and superficial as it gets (what, are you like 12?). Either way you're entitled to your opinion. But make it count. Give a good reason for what you're saying. Anyhow, its not worth reducing this to mindless conversation. But thanks a lot.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

And once again, there you go assuming things you have no idea about. I don't know how you assumed that I thought you didn't like toxicgirl, I was just pointing out that you were wrong for assuming that she was not open to things. And I don't have any idea what you liking me or not liking me has to do with this. My comment wasn't a personal attack against you unlike yours where you insinuated that I was superficial and acting immature. And of course, I didn't say that you look dumb..just that assuming things makes people in general look dumb. It's your choice if you want to start assuming things and just prove my statement true.

J
jkjavaOG 2003 thatdarngirl

Again, thank you for your kind criticism. Please hear me out, ok? I don't know you personally, your likes, dislikes, etc, and I certainly have no reason to dislike you. So when I told you that...it should have been a good thing, right? I respect anyone's opinion on things. However, I did not assume that I was called dumb. Just look at your reply to me. You said that you didn't say that I look dumb, yet in the next sentence you wrote that it was YOUR statement. Make up your mind. If I offended you any way though, I apologize. I just wanted to have a friendly discussion about certain music with people. Is that what you want? Ok then, lets stop with this nonsense. By the way, nothing's bad about assuming...it helps you figure out what others may really feel.
Anyhow, if you need the words, then - I'm sorry, for whatever you're obviously upset over. I hope you'll let this matter drop, so that this topic can get some actual responses and ideas. Nice talkin' to ya.

someday, you two will be married.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 jkjava

I'm sorry too and of course I can forgive you seeing as how the all-mighty Iwz has declared that we will be wed some day.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003 thatdarngirl

I envy you. First, because I wish the all knowing iwz would look into the crystal ball and tell me about my future. Second, how is it that you get to marry everyone on eZabel?

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 toxicgirl

I enjoy being the subject of envy. Heehee. I think the reasons I get to marry everyone on ezabel are:
1) I am the only girl who practices polygamy here
2) I would never refuse a taco date if it was ever offered.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003 thatdarngirl

Hahahaha...Dan that's your cue.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 toxicgirl

sorry, i'm hookin up with the girl who offered to make me tacos in the journals, from PA

J
jkjavaOG 2003 thatdarngirl

I really appreciate the offer, from both you and IWZ...but sorry to tell you, this guy is already spoken for (going on nearly 4 years now). But thanx for thinking about me. I hope we can still be friends.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 jkjava

Ahh! But I am already spoken for. Several times over in fact. I practice polygamy..so everything's okay.
