by man, i hate this stupid debate, but people are going to fight about it regardless of whether i care or not...so, might as well give them a nice space for it...let's start off with a band...Jimmy Eat World...SOOOO not emo.

I like what I like...there is no classifying me. This whole "emo or not" thing just gives me a headache. "I think I have a tumor. Anyone seen scanners?" Today the boundaries have been blurred and I'm happy! Musical styles mixing is a dream come true. It's getting harder and harder to catagorize. Once we get out of this cloud of confusion and get used to it things will be ALL good.
you know what kills me...i'm going to see dashboard next week...I've never been to a show in an open space (no seats) and it NOT been a punk show, really...(ok i realize MB20 was like that but there were tons of people shoving for some reason, so I don't count that)...anyway, how to act in this situation?? is there shoving? crowd surfing? am i too old to crowd surf?

Ok, new band for the "are they emo or not" discussion....how about...metallica. they are whiny, they are annoying. they wear all black. they are emo.
but they have big hair. that disqualifies them automatically from the "emo" category and slaps the "90's grunge/metal" label on them...
um, a band is considered a certain genre because of how they sound, not how they look....that'd be kinda shallow don't ya think?...I mean, there ARE trends associated w/different kinds of music, but I mean, if Jay-Z started wearing tight shirts & boot cut jeans, but still kept putting out rap albums, would he be considered emo ANYWAY?..lol
lol actually he probably would. i think the whole "genre" thing is overrated anyway and music should just be listened to and loved, not classified. i'm just saying.

Yea, I know, i'm just saying, there's a specific sound some bands go for that I like to consider emo - it kinda pulls the same emotion outa ya so you kinda think of these bands in the same way..I just don't like when music is associated w/anything more than sound....like style of clothes & whatnot

OH goooooodness...why'd ya have to go & get me started?...I majored in Emoligy, gradtuated w/honors...So, a forum is like WAY up my alley...::ehem::..the first thing I wanna say is that, emo IS a genre..and it has tell tale giveaways that shout "hey, look @ me, I'm emo" but, only to the discerning ear...it's a grandchild off of the post punk-indie rock sound,(download sebadoh's song "careful")..it's a cousin to hardcore(download anything by silverstein)..

JEW is cool and I could prolly get into Thrice but if Taking Back Sunday is "So emo it HURTS" you betta believe I'm not gonna go there...besides I don't think I can pull off that "tight tee-shirt with the malnurished, 'I'm a skinny teenager' look"-Nah, not at all!

I assume you're talking about JEW's latest album right? Have you listened to Clarity and Static Prevails?
I completely forgot about those!...Been so inundated w/bleed american I forgot there was a time when those guys actually laid down quality stuff, I haven't heard Static Prevails at all, but, Clarity actually has one of my favorite songs on it...I had a burnt copy so I have NO idea what the name of the song is..but..yeah, you're right, their older stuff is emo-worthy
I will second that. Im not a big "emo" fan at all. But JEW's Clarity is one of my favorite albums of all time. Static Prevails is pretty darn tootin too.

Thursdays recordings are extremely weak and some of the mistakes they make are just pathetic. that guys voice isn't worth..anything. live, it's tolerable though.
OK, so their singer was having a bad throat day when they recorded Full Collapse, and live I happen to like his voice a lot...MUSICALLY is where they shine the most...For some reason I find it easy to look past the shabby vocals on the album....their next one should be more seasoned though...but, alas, this is all opinion...we're all wrong and right at the same time

We have an Emu farm by my house..two actually. At the one farm there was an emu husband and wife and some kids let one out at night and it died and the other one started to die of heartbreak.

its the way kids dress. seriously, go to any "emo" show, and the music may be acoustic, loud, mellow or angry, but all the guys are wearing a tight black t-shirt and have longish dark hair. all of them.

whether you like it or not, its the conformity that kills me. the last little show I went to was ridiculous.
i can imagine. it's all really quite horrifying. the show i went to that had the most varied crowd was Gorillaz. i saw old people, really young people, all kinds of spanish peoples, thugs and gangsters, lil asain anime looking kids, the indie/alternative blur fans all gettin' down together. it was great!
yeah, the Gorillaz show I went to was great. very hip/varied NY crowd. I love NYC sometimes. me and thai had an interesting time trying to drive home that night.

Emo is unidentifiable! isn't all music somewhat emotional? i think the teenies needed a silly new name for their recatagorization of rock music! i hear them now: "we're new and angry and we like hard rock and post punk that isn't really anything-punk now! wait! the name rock makes me think of bon jovi and i hate his hair and punk makes me think of sex pistols and that is so naughty...lets make our own lil subpar subgenre! wheeeee! pass the glitter and watch out because i'm a moody pixie today!" ok, this makes no sense..

I kinda agree with some of what you say, but "emo" wasn't a termed coined by the "listeners" and/or "trend-starting teenie-boppers." It's actually said to have been coined at an Embrace show (Ian MacKaye's band after Minor Threat and before Fugazi). Which goes to show also... that meanings can over periods of time, since what many call "emo" today, has a different sound than what "emo" was used to describe yesterday.
i really appreciate when people who actually KNOW what their talking about post. very informative. :)
