College dropout eh?..interesting
So
Ya'll know about my beef w/rap....The "music" involved is a lot of times something i can(and have)whipped up on my computer in 5 minutes..i.e., this new craze w/the high pitched, sometimes childlike vocals, like that twista song, or hard knock life, all ya do is take a vocal track(usually from somebody elses song, old motown tune, etc.)throw it in one of MANY music altering programs..and w/the click of a mouse, you can lower, or, in this case, highten the pitch...any of you could easily do this, lol - it takes no expertise..and, along w/that...the lyrics are often shallow/materialistic/disrespectful to girls....like the stuff or not, you can't deny those things..
That being said
This kanye west fella as they call'm, i duno something different bout'm...he's, clever...i don't have as much of a problem calling him an artist..musician?..no...because of the lack of musical knowledge(90% of rappers know NOTHING about music theory/notes/chords, or any components of music besides how to turn on a beat box & press play)...so for the most part most rappers aren't musicians, cause none of them know how to play any instruments, or know anything about the technicalities of music at all...poets?....yeah, rappers can be poets....if they're laying down intelligent thoughts...which is what this dude seems to be doing..like, to me, rap is spoken word, over a beat....so when done right, it feels more like poetry to me..not music.....the word that keeps coming to mind when i think'a this kanye's stuff is, clever...it's just, so different from all the crap he's surrounded by in his genre - even if he's rhyming about something as frequently used as relationships, he still uses a very artistic way of going about expressing it...cool stuff...i must say, he's caught my attention...

i hate when funkmaster flex drops bombs! gah! that's so annoying
How did he get his hands on bombs? Wow, that's crazy. Who'd he drop them on?
::sympathetic laughter:: o bolly
The first name that came to mind for me, as far as someone who expresses words over music, plays multiple instruments, and even writes and produces, is RZA.
He's asian now.
It definetly seems that he wants to be
Him and Tarantino. Asian wannabes. I like Rza tho. He's a shysty one tho.
No, he was drafted by the asians.
You'd have to see that episode of Chappelle's Show. :P
why is he asian now?..i don't get it...
he was drafted by the asian in the racial draft of 2004
woods = 100% black
what?..oh he plays the piano right..or is that ghostface...lol, i can't keep up
COOL? Bryan you know i agree with you most of the time, but please! The guys single "Through the wire", which was a heavily sampled track, had, for the first two lines, rhymes of Dizzzert (not dessert) and Sizzerp (not SYRUP).
I'm no lyrical genius, but even my crizzap makes some sense. I know he has more knowledge than most in the 'game' because he produced. But i don't think we can refer to it as ground-breaking or intelligent.
*Now if you wanted ground breaking, i can score you some bootlegs of a band called ophelia. They were some off the wall talented folk...
i heard they got disbanded due to division in the group about who was the greatest
Wow..I heard that TFFS bought them out because they needed background dancers.
as too fat for spandex's manager, i can't comment. i can only tell you that i know NOTHING about chex mix and madonna's former best friend.
hahaha...not to mention that our singer got um, well ya'll know...and...the bassist sold all of his equipment...that kinda stuff will kinda put a dent in a band, lol...the new band's doin good though, people will like it more anyway...so..MAYBE it was a good thing..but.i emphasize MAYBE..cause i would've liked to see where opelia coulda gone
the single he has after that is what got my attention, it's saying A LOT if you like read through the entire lyric sheet
Cop Sirens are so obnoxious.
HUUUHH!??!?!!!?!?!
OOOOOKAAAAYYYYY!
whhhhaaaaat!!!!!!!!
rappers never said they were musicans. they are artists. the producers are the musicians.. they combine.. and BAM.. good stuff.
i've definately heard rappers call themselves musicians before...and, haha, a lota producers are even musicians!.dude - d'you have any idea how easy it is to use one'a these beat making progams, throw in a lil keyboard, and WHAM, ya got a "beat"...this kid i'm studying with, demonstrated this to me on his computer one time, he made a beat that sounds JUST like 75% the stuff out there now, in like literally 15 minutes...it was fun..and very funny....but was nothing more than pushing buttons and clicking mouses
well tell him to go make millions then... why sit around...
actually he's about to start looking into marketing himself with it...just to get some quick cash
Yeh, that can be pathetic. Some computer-based trackers (as they call them), you do hafta know about music tho. I actually use a tracker sometimes myself (I play physical instruments tho, as well, I'll have you know), that someone who isn't knowledgable about music, wouldn't be able to use to it's full capacity. It's not one of those point and click and drag and drop jobs. It's actually pretty hard to put something together with the program. I'm planning on using in some songs, at least, interludes at gigs, in conjunction with real instruments, with my band.
sounds cool, gota herer it
I like Kanye West. The think the ROOTS and N.E.R.D. are truly talented folks.
by the way, that "college dropout" title's referin to the name of his album....for those who were wondering
I think Black Eyed Peas has talent. It just so happens at a Levi's Snocore I went to in '99, just cuz Soul Coughing was on the bill.. Black Eyed Peas performed at as well. They managed really brilliantly, to get a full house of people in the Electric Factory, who probably wouldn't listen to that music normally, to dig it, dance, dance, and dig it. Minus the song they did with Justin Timberlake... most of the other stuff is real quality stuff. I might also add, that they use live instruments, and not samples, turntables, or computers. Sure, you'll get the occasional sample or turntable manuever... but their music is reliant on it. They're heavily all about the live instruments. And, have killer breakdance moves. Really exciting to witness!
Their music isn't reliant on it.. is what I meant to say. Ooops
i heard black eyed peas are amazing in concert! so sad i missed the N.E.R.D/BEP concert =( oh well, but yes i really like Black Eyed Peas also. i luv the added touch with the girl, her voice is amazing
Yeah but you kind of left out Wyclef Jean. No offense Wyclef does both rap and reggae and has a lot of musical ability and so do those Neptunes guys. NERD has some pretty crazy talent if you check them out closely.
yeah, he's cool....good guitarist
One thing I do think though is that some of the older stuff sounds a lot better than this new junk we hear. Like you put on some old Beastie Boys and Run DMC back in the day and you actually could hear some smooth G notes coming from the guitars. Now a days you hear all this techno junk added into it. Rap annoys me because I think they put in all the most annoying sirens from emergency vehicles and just play them over and over again. And now we have all this scream-o rap like Lil John and Ja Rule. They sound like they been smoking for 40 years and have these gruff voices. thats cool? Eesh I find it obnoxious.
WHHHAAAAAAAAT!??!?!?...OOkkk
I agree. The most scream-o rapper is certainly Mystikal. He's rediculous. I despise Lil John and Ja-Rule. That stuff is completely NON-musical and extremely assaultive to the senses.
Not a Tom Waits fan then, I take it? ..Huh? He's the ultimate in gruff, but minus the rap. haha He's insanely soulful. Listen to him sometime.
i really dig N.E.R.D, amazing and funky...
