I never thought I'd see the day...

Apple now supports installing and dual booting Windows XP on their new Intel Macs.

Nice!

Apple sure is seeing a boost in sales now on thier mac book pro. I just wish I would have waited. I just got a powerbook in November. :(

yo. this is ridiculous. with boot camp, ok, you can install xp BUT -

1. it must be a brand new copy (not an OEM copy that comes with a Dell PC or anything
2. It cannot be an "upgrade" version, it must be a full version.
3. The Windows CD must have XP SP2 on it
4. This will not work with Windows 2000

Waaaaaaaait - so you mean I have to spend a LOT of money just on a stupid copy of Windows XP ... why?

haha. you sure about that 2nd one? it probably depends mostly on your cd-key.

my dad got this going on his Macbook Pro. he made a custom XP cd by slipstreaming SP2 onto it. it's SWEET. so fast.

and so weird

As a mac guy, it's nice that mac is supporting this.

My fear is that now that mac has officially endorsed this, that third party developers will not see a need to develop software for the clearly superior OSX. Because they can reach more machines (including macs) with a windows program.

You know, when I first saw this I thought they were crazy, but it sort of makes sense. Get people to use Mac hardware by allowing them to use Windows on their Macs, and then transition them over to OS X once they see how much better it is.

haha yeah. John C Dvorak was predicting a month back or so that Apple was going to drop OS X for Windows. He was pretty close!

It's an interesting move, because they're now basically in the PC space, and could be competing with the likes of Dell and Gateway. Of course, they're not very competitive when it comes to pricing against those companies.

So you may be right, maybe they'll use this as a sort of "easy switch" sort of thing.

Yeah the price is what has always stopped me from going back to Macs. We had macs growing up, but switched in '94/'95 when my dad bought me a 100 MHz Pentium.

BTW, someone else agrees with me:

"the ability to dual boot Windows (and - likely - use it within OS X in Leopard via virtualization) is probably the trump card Apple was waiting to use. "

oh yeah. I'm buying a dual core mac mini

yay yayOG 2004

who's to say MS won't ever allow it? They just said for now

they dont care about the computer segment as much anymore, when their ipods are ruling the world. More money on those little things.

i agree with this. it's such marketing crap! yet, i will never give mine up.

also, i would really like a 30 or 40 gig ipod combined with my Treo - get everything in one device and do it WELL. I mean, I can get a 2 gig SD card for my Treo, where's the other 28 gigs to make this a REALLY sweet tool?

yeah. I was thinking the exact same thing...
