Recommend A Movie
Saturday night at dinner, we tried to list our top 5 movies. I couldn't do it. It's so subjective. I was defining favorite by desire to rewatch. Favorite may mean something different to you. What I want to rewatch depends on mood and who I'm with and a host of other variables. Easily my fav movie is Clueless, but you all knew that. I also love Barefoot in the Park with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford. Then, I really like "classic" hollywood movies. So I would pick a Marilyn Monroe (How to Marry a Millionaire-so funny-she plays a near sighted social climber), a Fred Astaire (so many great ones, but I'd pick Daddy Long Legs-co starring Leslie Caron), an Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany's is the obvious one, but Charade and How to Steal a Million Dollars and Live Happily Ever After are better movies IMO), including a Katharine Hepburn (Desk Set or The Philadelphia Story) would be ideal, but I've run out of picks and I haven't completed one genre.
So anyway, I decided I need to branch out of my classic movie rut.
So here's your chance, Ezabelers, to recommend one movie.

In Good Company
http://imdb.com/title/tt0385267/
i really enjoyed this movie. i thought it was going to be a dumb romantic comedy, but it was intelligent and real.
also , i wanted to add that the director mentioned in the commentary that he wanted to have the drama come from regular growth in relationships opposed to bizzare disfunction. he suceeded.
just watched it last night. I liked it overall. I don't think it was a groundbreaking movie or anything, but it had some good moments, and I kind of thought it was cool that it didn't end exactly how you thought it would
The Interpreter. VERY good movie. Deals with some weighty issues involving terrorism and enthnic cleansing among non-arab [for a change]groups. Very well paced and very well shot. Eye candy. Penn and Kidman were fantastic too.
I'm sorry, either I was missing something, or I'm just a hater....but I found this movie very unfulfilling (IMHO). I know we are supposed to recommend a movie here, but I recommend waiting for it to come out on video, or not bothering at all.
PS - Nothin against you, Bri, you're still A-OK by me.
PPS - Sean Penn is cool.
PPPS - stromboli
hey, if your gonna "IMHO" me, then don't apologize. wuss.
lol, wanna fight?
hahaha, i'm kidding with you, bro. but for the sake of my surging testosterone levels--i'd break you in half THEN blend the top half into a smoothie and grill the bottom half and enjoy a nice, delicious lunch.
I do make a delicious grilled lunch. :D
I know you were kidding, and you're crackin me up!
mostly martha (bella martha)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0246772/
if you can stand it being in german with english subtitles, it is a great story, very human, sadly sweet and wonderful. i was laughing and tearing up in an alternating fashion.
for some reason, they didnt subtitle the italian dialog so you are on your own for that, but it is fairly simple vocabulary.
sounds like "life is beautiful", maybe I'll check it out. Thanks, sum.
buon giorno, principessa!
love that movie.
Don't call me princess.
sì signore, capisco
ps the best scene is:
martha: what do you know about your father?
lina: his name is guiseppe
martha: do you know his last name?
lina: from italy
has anyone said this?
meet the fockers.
so i really didnt like meet the parents at all. but on the plane ride to spain (6 hours) this was the only movie i sorta had any inkling to watch. it was an overnight flight and i think i woke up 15 people by how loud i was laughing. from beginning to end i thought it was hysterical. the fake breast. everyone should see it.
why should everyone see a fake breast?
I beg to differ.
yeah i was kinda the opposite, i really liked meet the parents but i wasnt in love with the sequel
If i had ONE classic picture, it would be Casablanca.
But if i had another, it would be TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Lauren B. = Fox (Her wiggle at the end is priceless)
Superbitude...
bogie and bacall..eh *shrugs shoulders* i will check it out though.
ill take hepburn and tracey anyday over them. or better yet - doris day and cary grant.
Wit, with Emma Thompson, directed by Mike Nichols. Amazing movie. Finally, a fantastic and mature movie that isn't R.
yeah, unlike all those teen comedies that are rated pg-13 but should be rated r and have no redeeming scenes.
emma thompson is a class act. thanks for the recommendation.
Spanglish
my sister recommended this to me also. i will have to check it out.
there is one weird and i mean weird sex scene tho.
define weird. then define sex.
i am not bill clinton. go use the dictionary.
when a man and woman love each other very much
***makes motion of index fingers side by side
i just watched it the other night, it was pretty decent. had some funny moments
i went to go see this for extra credit i cried, thought it had good lines and made amajor point at the end but overall i would not watch it agian.
my mom didnt get "the conversation" part at all, but for some reason it made sense to me
if you haven't, go see hitch.
I MUST...this is the THIRD time someone's recommended Hitch. Two female votes one male. Sounds like a pretty nuetral (non chick flick) film, YAY!
Add me to that vote. I cracked up SOOOO much at the end. Anyone who saw my brother dance at the formal....were those NOT his moves in the end dancing scene? TOOO funny!!!
i loooooooove kevin james so much. great movie. G-R-E-A-T!
here's another recommendation! very funny movie :)
Garden State, very strange but if ur from Jersey, you get it
I haven't seen this movie but I heard that it isn't overly NJ. I mean, I know people from other states who got it.
yeah i also heard that there is nothing "NJ" about this movie.
it could definitely be an "Any-Town, USA" movie. theres a couple references here and there, but...meh, no, nothing really "NJ" about it.
my memory fails me, but that hotel is right there in jersey city
Only thing about it... was it made me fall in love with N.portmans character. she rocked.
I didn't see if this is recommended here yet but I loved "Hero" just visually stunning
I loved it, too. amazingly beautiful.
my favorite was the fight between Moon and Snow when everything was red and the yellow leaves....... oh man.... it was like watching a dream
when the commercial for this movie was on tv, that was I looked forward to the most. I love the colors, and the pure beauty. But after watching the movie, it's not my absolute favorite. The whole RED scene stuff is amazing, but I think I enjoyed the first fight--Nameless vs. (what's his face? The first assassin?) in the rain, with the old dude playing that musical instrument. Oh man, it's so cool!!!!!!!!!
oh yeah, really awesome artistic use of water right? really cool.
But yeah the movie as a whole.. i didn't really like the ending
yeah, me neither. Kind of annoying, but it's typical oriental tragedy. (yeah, right, I don't know what the heck I'm talking about!)
hahahaha.... oh man i thought that was a good answer lol
yes i loved that part-it was beautiful. everyone i was watching it with is like 'that's so dumb and unrealistic' Hi, its called art and symbolism. and like the whole rest of the movie is so realistic.
Yet ANOTHER movie I couldn't find anyone to go with...It looked amazing I'll have to rent it, is it worth adding to my dvd selections?
only if you want to be absolutely stunned visually by the colors and awesomely choreographed artistic fight scenes
not to mention awesome surround sound experience.
i hated this movie... i saw in the theatre... hated it.... tried it again cause todd recommended it.. and hated it the second time.... ick
sorry, bro, I guess not everyone is born with such great taste in films :P
I keed, I keed.
you wre just waaaay to slow to read fast enough to get the story and even when i explained it to you, you still didn't understand it.
what's weird is he can read me under a table. But he couldn't when it came to Hero.
he can read you under a table?
or above, I guess. Which ever means that he's a much faster reader.
would you, could you under a table? Have mike read when he is not able?
I DEFINATELY recommend Cellular. It was awesome in the previews and delivered every bit of that and then some. Pre-ordered the dvd through my club, should be on it's way!
My parents saw it, and said the first half of this movie is horrible. But if you can make through that, it gets sort of good. To each his own?
So here's your chance, Ezabelers, to recommend one movie. DONE
I took my chance to dis it.
whoops (mystery science theater 3000: the movie)
KUNG POW.
Watch it, Love it, Quote it.
then watch again with the ACTUAL audio--they have a whole track with the actual chinese, and the stuff that Steve Odekirk says before the intentional bad dubbing.--very funny.
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
MPAA: Rated PG-13 for comic violence, crude and sexual humor.
thanks but no thanks. crude humor does not amuse me.
it's like stupid guy humor. Ugh the sexual stuff isn't very prevalent at all (much worse movies would include: all the Austin Powers movies, and the ace ventura movies.
i havent seen those either. i avoid stupid guy humor.
you are MISSING OUT.
i actually tried to watch the first austin powers once. let me rephrase, someone tried to watch it with me. i fell asleep.
hmm, maybe you're too intellectual for your own good. (though austin powers--you did yourself a favor by sleeping through it. A lot of funny stuff, but lots of bad stuff. I've banned myself from the rest of those. (there's supposed to be 2 more)
maybe. im pretty happy as is though.
happy is good. I'm glad you're happy.
but you're smug. so i love you.
***thanks buddy***
by the way, Crude has a plethora of meanings.
I think the 3rd definition is the most fitting when it comes to describing Kung Pow. (as opposed to definition # 2. (haha, #2) )
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=crude
yeah, it can mean primitive, also. idk. maybe ill hazard a viewing sometime. i did finally see billy madison two years ago and it didnt scar me for life. i even laughed a little.
This movie is SO stupid!! But all guys LOVE it. I admit, I sat there, arms crossed with a faint smile of amusement on my face. Watching it with guys is REALLY funny tho.
I agree, it is stupid, but it gets funnier everytime.
Irony: I won't drink an alcoholic drink until I acquire a taste for it. It isn't worth the time or money. But I will watch something a few times, until I've acquired a taste for it. IE: whiskey=nasty. So I never will try it again. BUT the first time I watched 24 = boring. I watched only one episode but kept hearing how good it is. I watched it again, and started getting into it. Then I began to love it (after 3rd episode I was hooked.).
I SWEAR I must be the most outta place chick,! I haven't seen it STILL even though when it first came out in theaters I was DYING to (couldn't finad a girlfriend to go with). Recently I wanted to rent it and my sister very nicely said "You can get it for YOURSELF" ouch, I need luv.
This movie is dumb.
see my comment (above) to the last person who said this.
Bless you.
My top five are as follows:
1. The Star Wars saga
2. The Lord of the Rings trilogy
3. Batman (1st one, others sucked)
4. Field of Dreams
5. Spiderman
off the top of my head right now.. all Back to the Futures (if only one of them tho.. Back to the Future Part 2), Better Off Dead, Sphere, Big Fish, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
i recommend:
Fandango (1985)
DVD release: February 15, 2005.
"An unknown Kevin Costner is magnetic in this entertaining road picture that bypassed most theaters when it was released 1985. On the eve of their college graduation in 1972, five students go off for one last road trip together to righteously celebrate the privilege of youth. Kevin Reynolds expanded his grad-school film to make this one, which he also directed, and it caught the eye of Steven Spielberg, who made Fandango one of his first projects at the newly formed Amblin. Costner's charisma is undeniable in his first lead performance as Gardner Barnes, the free bird of the group. Barnes applauds buddy Kenneth's (Sam Robards) decision to cancel his wedding and now is talking him into dodging the draft. But lost love drives Gardner, too, and we see dreams of an abandoned beauty (Suzy Amis). Others in the car include stick-in-the-mud Judd Nelson (in his best performance), who is gung ho for fulfilling his duty in Vietnam, and the soft giant Dorman (Chuck Bush). Reynolds's aggressive camera style and great use of music (Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting)" and Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" bookend the picture) make this film zing along. Reynolds and Costner went on to film (and fight off-screen) two more pictures, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld, but they were never better together than in this first film. Being hungry Hollywood unknowns does have certain advantages."
i like jason robards. i wish he weren't dead.

Steve Soderbergh's Solaris with George Clooney.
Robert Altman's Popeye with Robin Williams.
James Cameron's The Abyss. Awesome cast, amazing effects.
is solaris scary? im not very good with scary.
ive seen the others. popeye was filmed in malta and my friends hubbys fam is from there so ive seen photos of the sets and stuff. idk why i was motivated to tell you that.
Because I enjoy movie prodcution trivia. That's why.
Also, Solaris isn't scary. It's HIGH sci-fi. Pretty intense. Heart breaking. Good stuff.
its kind of surreal to see your friends on a movie set. idk why the maltese have left the set intact after so many years. i guess they dont have many tourist attractions in malta. if youre ever in malta, you should stop by. youd like it.
stop trying to show off you know every director and everything they direct :p
I'm just sharing my wealth of movie knowledge. I think directors are to be respected as much as and sometimes more so than actors. So, I list their names. Big whuppy-duppy-doo, lol
Labyrinth
never seen but heard good things. i will try it.
aw i LOVE labyrinth! esp dave bowie in the long hair!
I hate this movie and refuse to let it be in my house even though my sister has a crazy Bowie obsession.
Gatacca
weve got this on tape. good pick.
This is such an amazing movie! Ethan Hawke does such an amazing job.
Big Fish
summer summer summer... lol... Soo many movies, so little time.
Ok...
1. Hackers ( a must see, rent it right away, or just buy off of ebay)
2. Empire Records ( good movie, with classic lines )
3. Star Wars (all of them... yes even the newer ones)
4. Charade with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant ( best movie EVER)
5. More or less ANY movie with Cary Grant
6. Any movie with Audrey Hepburn... she was SOOO hot... aww man
7. Indiana Jones... all of them.
... hmm i can keep going, but you only wanted 5?
ive seen all of those except hackers. i will check it out. keep going. maybe you will get to something else i havent seen.
Hackers is awesome..so 80s it's out of control. Or is it early 90s?
ehh... definitely not 80's at all, except in the sense that it came out a decade later.
Yeah..this is true. Hmm..why do I always associate the early 90's with the 80s?
actually, 1995 is more mid-90's. (sorry for the sarcasm! this movie was just so not 80's it hurts. it was as 90s as it could get)
Its okay, I was wrong and you were correcting me! I wasn't old enough back then and the years kinda blend together.
that movie was horrible, the only reason mike likes it is because of angelina jolie. once again HORRIBLE
i liked it well enough. it was predictable but less predictable than i thought. i liked how he won a date in a dress. very cool.
wow mike i never realized you were such a carey grant fan. you must be quite the romantic.
...fag!
i love how you say "IMO" - that's so 1994
thanks im totally retro!

i recommend:
Barefoot in the Park
http://imdb.com/title/tt0061385/
I read that play and wrote on it for a paper a few years back. It was enjoyable.
