OK, just watched it again, since it's on DVD now. We watched it at my friend Kevin's place, on his projector and movie theater seating (yeah, it's sick).
So, I liked the movie better the 2nd time, especially Heath's acting. It was definitely creepy and well done, and I sort of enjoyed the plot a little bit more (but again, not as much as Batman Begins).
However, as I said last time, the terrible "Batman" voice killed it. Every time Christian Bale started to speak in the suit, I cringed. Even worse, there are points when he didn't need to do the voice - like with Lucious when they're alone. He KNOWS Bruce Wayne is Batman, you don't need to try and fool him. That voice is like nails on a chalkboard, in my mind.
oh, and did you all notice the 911/american goverment commentary?
sure
okay, here's a word on this movie. it was definitely an ensemble movie, not really a batman movie. it was the 'bruce wayne/joker/jim gordan/harvey dent' show. without each other they wouldn't be what they all are. the joker was the wild card they all teamed up to destroy. that movie was very well contructed. it was over an two and a half hours and the plot never slowed down long enough for me to look at my watch. good stuff. can't wait to see it again.
ok, I've been really quiet about this movie so far, but I have to say, the plot was ridiculous, confusing, and pointless.
I give this movie 5 stars out of 10 (that's three more points than Indiana Jones, mind you). Morgan Freeman was excellent, Heath Ledger's acting was so creepy I was terrified, and Michael Caine is welcome in any movie. However, Christian Bale's "scary" voice as Batman was painful by the end, the pathetic "acting" by Maggie Gynnethal made me almost miss Katie Holmes, and why were their fat "Batmen" with guns running around?
Batman Begins, by comparison, had an excellent back story - Bruce Wayne in an Asian prison, fighting anyone and everyone. The story of his training, defeating his trainer (remember the scene of him and Liam Neeson fighting on the ice?) - all to get back to Gotham and use his skills for good was engaging and interesting. There was one mob boss to deal with, and that made it easy to follow.
In the new one - we're given many scenes of different mob bosses. Who cares about tons of mob bosses meeting in a restaurant kitchen? Is this Analyze This? Is Billy Crystal showing up?
One last thing - Christian Bale is a good actor (I like the Prestige) but he has some kind of mouth problem (a weird lisp?) that's accented by the Bat costume. And he seems way too skinny to be Batman (and maybe he even lost weight and muscle since Batman Begins). I like my superheroes to have impressive physique's that I can aspire to.
That's my feelings on the movie. Lauren loved it, and couldn't wait to see it again. I feel like I'd watch it again on video just for a few scenes.
well you've probably never read frank miller's the dark knight returns. the fake batmen with guns was a take off on a gang in that book called the sons of batman. basically, the sons of batman were guys running around trying to help batman fight crime.
also, if you had read the dark knight returns or any batman comic book, you would know that the joker is supposed to be psychotic and creepy. he is basically the coolest villain ever, and heath ledger performed the hell out of the roll.
i dont know about you but i am glad this movie didn't have the same plot as the last one. that would have been a little redundant.
also, christian bale was huge in this movie. definitely way bigger than you.
i will agree with you, however that the voice he uses as batman gets a little annoying. but the reason you didn't like this movie is probably because you do not like good movies.
fortunately, I have the ability to mark this post as stupid. but I won't, I'll just mark it as stupid in my head.
why should i read a book (or graphic novel) to enjoy a movie? Most people won't bother. However, I am the exception to the rule. Give me the book (or graphic novel) and I'll read it.
I didn't require the same plot as the last movie - merely an engaging plot that was interesting.
Christian Bale looked skinny and emaciated. Sort of like you with no shirt on playing drums.
Also - it's not "roll" it's "role".
THIS post should be marked very, very funny.
well you're an idiot anyway for not liking the movie...also you're ugly.
also you think you telling me im skinny is going to offend me? go hit the gym son...and go get a rhinoplasty, while you're at it.
You're both a couple of runts.
so far, I've read
Batman: Year One
and I'm working through
The Dark Knight Returns
The library just alerted me to the fact that "The Killing Joke" has arrived.
year one was awesome!
you're a good man. killing joke is nuts.
So I finished The Dark Knight Returns this morning. I gotta say, it was excellent. The female Robin was intriguing, I loved seeing Batman fight Superman, and I loved the trick at the end. Having read it, now that whole "sons of batman" thing makes a little more sense, but I still feel the movie confused the whole thing.
There were some parts I didn't get. For instance, I always thought that Commissioner Gordon's daughter is named Barbara and that she becomes Batgirl. But in Year One, Commissioner Gordon's wife is named Barbara- and in Dark Knight Returns, she's Sarah? I was really confused by this. (Side note, I just Wikipedia'd this and apparently it depends on which line of continuity the particular story happens to be in. Which is weak, if you ask me.) (Ok I read more of the Wikipedia article. Apparently she is his niece, who he adopts. Seriously, I do not have this kind of time, people!)
oh, some other things I didn't like. I still argue that Batman is supposed to be large, and muscular (and completely unlike Christian Bale). The comics show him as absolutely huge, with large shoulders and massive arms. He towers over a lot of people, both as Bruce Wayne and Batman.
Also, in the comics, Batman spends a lot of time dodging bullets. For someone who has a bulletproof suit, he spends a lot of time acting like he could die if he gets hit. That also makes little to no sense. The guy has millions of dollars and doesn't bother to wear a bulletproof suit? What sense does that make?
mmmmmmm. i gotta say... i understand where you're coming from. and i feel like a nerd saying it, but the stuff that bugged you is all from the comic. pretty faithful work too. guess it didn't translate well for you.
the jokers evil sadistic psychopath level was almost overkill, but hey, they WANTED you to feel uneasy whenever he popped up in a scene. it worked well. i'll note the scene when he was taping himself with fake batman. i had a really ugly, cold feeling in my gut that i don't usually get watching movies.
bale skinny, i agree. but that's kinda batmans whole thing. he's just a man in a suit. he's not a "superhero" at all. he's just a dude who needs to fight crime and he has a keen intellect, suits and gadgets, vehicles, and back-up plans.
and yeah, the 'whiskey and cigarettes' batman voice is meant to terrorize villians and disguise his voice, but... yeah, i was cringing hard each time he used it.
maggie, oh maggie. she was out of her element. this was NOT a good role for her. katie holmes was a bad choice to BEGIN with if you ask me and but i'm piffed she didn't come back. so, they throw in maggie. this is not her kinda thing at all. she didn't fit. i like her in other movies though.
Wow, you agree with me? Thank you sir! (especially on the terrible scary Batman voice).
Although, I feel the "skinny man in a suit" should be reserved for Spiderman - (Toby McGuire still needs to hit the gym and then eat some Big Macs).
Sounds like I'll definitely need to read the book.
well, there's a few books you should read, lol. Batman: Year One, Dark Knight Returns (Batman is in that one). the Batman/Gordon/Harvey thing is begun in Batman: Long Halloween. the joker stuff is from Killing Joke and The Man Who Laughs. And no, i haven't read all of these comics, just Year One and Dark Knight Returns. Those are SOLID GOLD batman comics.
yea, christian didn't look as good in this movie as in the last one. I agree he was too skinny.
"Let's put a smiiiile on that face!"
very good movie, joker was so creepy and scary. I didn't really buy the harvey dent character though. I know he was crazy and this and that but I just wasn't crazy about him and I didn't buy his relationship with rachel either. i'm glad they didn't wasted an entire movie on two-face
also even though i disliked katie holmes in the first movie, it was annoying that a different actress played the character in this one. i was surprised they killed her off, but i'm not gonna miss her much
overall, good movie
guys, i'm going to jail. i showed my boss the "disappearing pencil trick" and they don't think he's going to recover.
great flick. that's all i have to say.
wow. never thought i'd say this, but...i miss katie holmes. Maggie Gyllenhaal is just BUTT ugly.
other than that...THE DARK KNIGHT IS AMAAAAZINGGGG!!!!!
Well she died, so you don't have to worry anymore.
BUTT ugly doesn't even begin to cover it. The scene where she kissed Christian Bale made me want to throw up.
Maybe they used up all their budget on scenery and couldn't hire a good looking acrtress.
yeah....def poor choice. i hate her shrugged shoulders and lisp. UGH
but overall, the movie was amazing! heath ledger....SO psychotic...so amazing.
hahah, this is so funny all you guys think this. Austin said the same thing. That she's so ugly. I mean, i don't think she's that pretty or ugly. Just average. I wonder what it is about her, that everyone hates! lol
she's got these weird/huge bags under eyes. and she just has a weird lookin face.
yeah she looks like a sad cartoon turtle
Joker is dimented in this movie... somewhat disturbing at times... no wonder Ledger had sleeping problems....
the Dark Knight trailer using Legos!
hey legos cant overdose on prescription meds! LEGOS FTW
Wow, Heath Ledger died
yea my musings do that too... what the pie in the sky
my musings are broken and i cleared the history. grrr.
haha only messing around. You make movies better..
not those mindless popcorn eaters!
hmm did other unrealistic movie explosions make you come to the judgement that those cars should have flipped any differently... or are you an expert in explosives and collateral damage forensics...
I say.. ENJOY the BOOM
heh, i know. i did, i did enjoy the kaboom.
awesome little joker trailer. the best clip is when he's sticking his head out of the cop car window. ledger is almost unrecognizable as the joker.
i hope they do better with the effects in the final cut... man, some of it just wasn't right. that building explosion looks fake. there are cars directly in front of it and they don't even move. an explosion that big would have sent those cars flying. and the tractor trailer flipping forward as it did. never in a million years would it flip perfectly intact like that with the trailer tightly attached to the cab.
another thing that annoyed me is the part where batman is riding the bike toward the joker in the middle of the street. they already did that with the batwing in the first movie back in 89. the lil bat jet flying toward the joker, shooting at him, just to be shot down with a large pistol. they reversed it this time. batman DOES'T shoot at joker with his batguns AND the joker DOESN'T shoot and destroying batman's fancy vehicle. still too same-ish for me.
oh, i'll be there opening night regardless.
i love the revamp. it's like a dark evil punk joker and it works with the new bat-world they've created. i love it.
yay! no more katie dumpface!
Now it's Maggie Droopcheeks!
yay batman. i love christian bale as batman, hellooooooo.
I can not wait. OH MAN
hmmm... he looks a bit darker then i would think the Joker should be...
