Ok, since IWZ is being a baseball Nazi today, bring your Mets/Yankee contriversies and other related baseball talk in here.
1. I'll start by continuing with A-Rod. A-Rod is the best all-around player in the game and Yankee fans need to quit their whining that he isn't posting larger than life numbers. He's a great player. You want the best hitter in the game, trade for Pujols. But then your defense lacks.
2. The Mets are better than the Yankees. Like the Yankees of the late 90's, the Mets are capitalizing on a strong farm system and now have a good young core.
3. Atlanta will not make some miraculous comeback. The streak is over. Get over it! The Mets are too good this year.
4. Why are the Yankees looking at Reggie Sanders for the outfield!?! They need pitching...The hitting first mentality has ruined their post-season chances since 2002. They won on solid pitching and situational hitting. George Steinbrenner needs to hand the reigns over to a sane owner.

Couple more weeks till the regular season. Yippee!!

I guess the Mets would have been able to beat the Tigers too if the Cards are up 3-1.

sorry mets fans...i was rooting for you guys...if your guys were all healthy i really think you guys could have made it...

Yeah, they only had 3 quality starts out of their starters in 7 games. that isn't gonna win games.

So what a game...what a game...round one and yankees are done.... ;) I LOVE YOU GUYS.

They had no fire. Detroit did. The Mets do. I see those two teams matching up in the World Series.

baseball is dumb cause there is no salary cap. owners can buy themselves the best team in the world if they have enough money. it's retarded.

check that out...baseball so needs a salary cap...

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I won't argue that. Look at the Yankees. Their lineup is filthy. And why? Because they think they need an all-star at every position and do so by having bottomless pockets.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

no cap is ok. why? because the yanks just proved, again, that high salary doesnt equal success. look at the rangers in hockey. they used to buy everyone, and then the cap was put in...first year back, they made the playoffs for the first time in 7 years.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

i disagree, this is one of the main reasons i like the nfl better than mlb and even the nba, because every team has a chance to win it all every year. even tho the yankees didn't have "success" this year by their standards, they still won their division for the 10th time in 11 years and made the playoffs while other teams havent sniffed the playoffs for years.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Yeah, a cap is needed. But then again a lot of teams don't pour the money they make back into the team. They're getting money from the luxury taxes from high payroll teams and not using it towards their teams.

Oh yeah, and Mets rule!!

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

i dunno then, maybe they have to do some kind of revenue sharing like there is in the nfl. it's better for the overall health of the league and in the long run, everybody makes more money

C
chuggieOG 2003 ·

uh, they do. The angels and marlins, to name some recent examples are teams that won the world series with the aid of revenue sharing

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

well then how come there are TEAMS in mlb that operate with a total salary less than some PLAYERS?

or maybe they need a cap.

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

Cheap owners or Financially prudent owners.. Why waste your own money on a team... when you're collecting money from others luxury tax and revenue sharing.

those teams actually make money.

in the end .. it's stilla business and there are owners out there
who'd rather make a profit.. then lose moeny for a gold penant statue

C
chuggieOG 2003 · ilikebirds

in the new CBA they decided that if a team doesn't spend the money they collect from this on the team/payroll, they forfeit the money

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder · ilikebirds

bottom line: nfl=awesome, mlb = suck

B
brothermanOG 2004 · thefunkyfresh

Please...The NFL didn't even take over the number one spot until the early 90's. Baseball was long THE national sport. And no matter what, it'll have a richer and more exciting history than any other sport.

C
chuggieOG 2003 · thefunkyfresh

yeah i just think they're different but i seriously understand why so many people love it the most. I just wish more than half a mill could see the NFL games live (per team).

jp jpOG 2003 · thefunkyfresh

except for the whole nazi regime. i mean, fining people for celebrating? not letting peyton manning wear white shoes or whatever? no fun league fo sho.

and seriously, the nfl is pretty awful with the salary cap. hockey is doing an excellent job with it so far. in the nfl, players are cut left and right because of the cap, people who should get the decency and respect from their team but they cant afford to keep them and get new players. i cant think of many specifics but i remember shannon sharpe and i know there were a bunch more

Please....The Yankees got lucky that Boston sustained so many injuries.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

-hideki matsui
-gary sheffield
-robinson cano
-mike mussina

need i say more? i think not. when boston loses trot nixon for a couple weeks, trust me, it's not as much of a blow as losing matsui or sheffield. and we're still 11 up. if most teams went without 2 all star outfielders for 4 months and one of the best young players in the game for about a month, they'd be screwed.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Uh, they've had Abreu since the end of July. The Red Sox pitching staff is in ruins from all the injuries. Losing pitchers is more substantial than one or two position players on a lineup with allstars at every position.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

the yanks will win the world series this year. why? because the tigers wont hold up. the WANGINATOR will shut down the tigers' young counterparts. y'know why? cuz he doesnt kill his arm throwing hard all the time and striking people out, getting his pitch count up.

and the mets arent that good. theyve been beating up on a crappy league all year.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Yes but they split the season series with the Yankees. And Rivera is a question mark right now with his elbow, so the Mets are conceivably the best team. Pitching in both leagues is bad this year. Only Johan Santana has been dominant.
The Mets number 8 hitter is hitting .288, so that gives you an idea of how good their lineup is. And the bullpen is among the best in baseball. Add a healthy Pedro and a decent Glavine and you have a formidable opponent, regardless of who they play in the NL.
The catalyst is Jose Reyes. If he is getting on and stealing bases, the Mets run production becomes phenominal.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

my boy frankie liriano has been dominant, just injury prone. yeah the mets are good. but still, the yanks can get to em :)

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

For those who don't believe the Mets are just that good, they've played alot of games without Pedro on the hill and now Glavine and have still won 6 in a row and are 30 games over .500. Why? They have an amazing lineup and the best bullpen in baseball. Can you say World Series Champs?

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

jp jpOG 2003 ·

chicago and detroit aint that great.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

But they both have pitching which destroys the Yanks staff. You watch...That Yankee lineup will be quiet come October.

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

WE'll be fine!! we own detroit this year.. rocked them... we'll see whether chicago or minnesota makes it.. it probably will be chicago and rocked them as well.. without the abreu factor.. with it we'lre amazing

WE ROCK.

World Series this year!!! finally!!

all everyone wants to talk about is pitching pitching pitching..
of course we could use an ACE or two.. but we'll be fine!!

" ohh yanks won't make playoffs they have turrrrible pitching"
and now it'll be
" ohh yanks won't make it past the first round.. they have turrrrible pitching"
then it'll be
"ohh yanks won't make it past the second round.. they have turrrrible pitching"
then it'll be
" yea i'm an idiot.. their pitching is decent with an ALL start lineup.. they're good"

If they had a TERRIBLE lineup or even a MEDIOCRE LINEUP... yea pitching would really really matter. But when your entire team was an allstar in the past 3 years... your lineup is amazing... all we need is mediocre pitching..and we have that.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Ok...In 2003 they had a great lineup and amazing pitching and still lost. In 2004 the great lineup was silenced by the Red Sox. Last year they lost in the 1st round with a great lineup. The Mets will be representing the NL since everyone else sucks. The Mets will destroy the Yankee pitching. Rivera will be lucky if he gets in one game. The Mets lineup mimics the 2003 Marlins lineup with the mix of power and speed. Oh yeah and their 3rd baseman actually can catch and throw. But it doesn't matter, because I don't think that team will do it when it matters.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

how is the mets pitching so great? pedro sure, but glavine always fades down the stretch, ever since turning 65. then who do they have? its not even as good as the back of the yanks rotation.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

If you look at the stats, it's pretty much a draw.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

detroit:

verlander is a rookie, he will be burnt out, he probably has never thrown this many innings in his life. kenny rogers is such an overachieving scrub, he drives me nuts. he stinks. and he is the only one with playoff experience.

chicago:

garland only looks good bc of his win-loss. his era stinks. contreras is fading, vazquez is ehh and buerhle is losing it.

i really dont think these teams are that great. chicagos staff way overachieved last year.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Detroit has the best team ERA in the majors. The Mets are second. The Yankees are 11th. So that should shed some light on how good these two teams are. Yes Detroit is young and might crumble in the limelight but they've been consistent all year. So don't be surprised if they win it all. This is the worst pitching staff the Yankees have thrown out there since 96. I don't see them going anywhere. Pitching is what wins.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

you would think id get into detroit this year, being the underdog who comes from despair to be a contender, i usually love teams like that. but i cant seem to be happy for them. i think its because of kenny rogers. i cant stand him, for some reason.

Hold on a second pal...Just because they are in first place now, doesn't mean they will be at the end. I don't think they're built for the playoffs. I'm even concerned about the Mets. Both teams rotations have issues. Pitching is what wins.

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

pitch pitch pitch...
we're fine.
our bullpen is stocked. We just need guys to hang in there for 5-6 innings and we have that.

now just series wise... who do we have to worry about in the AL playoffs...

detroit? we're currently 3-1
CWS? currently 4-1
Oakland ... 3-6... so that might be scary.
minnesota ... 1-2 .

thats just our series records ... it is the past.. and we have improved our team. A lot.

wright has been pitching great last 2 games. johnson had a good 6inn no hitter going. mussina a+ . wang a+ .
lidle did great last game..
we'll be alright

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

It's a totally different stage in October.

It's an unproven staff other than Rivera. Mussina is always hit or miss in the playoffs. He'll pitch a solid game then suck. Wang? What has he done on the big stage? Question mark. Wright? He's crap. Lidle? Crap. Johnson? Over-the-hill.

Their offense is also mostly power hitters. No such thing as small ball in Yankee stadium. The Mets have all the tools in their lineup. And they have a proven starter in Pedro. But from there who knows. The bullpen is solid, but with Wagner never having 1-2-3 innings, I don't see definitive playoff success for the Mets either.

modestjesse modestjesseOG 2004 ·

I'll just say this.

1) The Mets made some great moves the past two years to get a great team. I expect to see them playing for the NL Title this year.

2) It's NY, of course people are going to smack talk A-Rod. He's in a slump, it happens, but New Yorkers will always cry about it. He's not going anywhere. But I have another theory. He's the new Mattingly. We'll never win another World Series with him on the team.

3) I wish Soriano was back in pinstripes.

4) Why can the Astro's never produce when they have Clemens on the mound?!?

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Soriano? He struck out like 87 times in the 2003 playoffs.

Clemens needs to stay retired.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

Hey brotherman, I actually thought of you when i heard someone say that atlanta is on the move so you can never count out bobby cox..what do you have to say about that? HaHa

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

True, but Cox has little to work with. The Braves will be hard pressed to win the Wild Card.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

Very true. But don't you think that a real good manager has something to do with the teams performance? For example, jim leyland with detroit. they have never had it, but once leyland is there, they are unstoppable. and it was the same when leyland was manager for pittsburgh. they were awesome when he managed pirates, as soon as he left, they pretty much fizzled out.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Motivation plays a role, but you have to have talent too. The Braves just don't have enough. Maybe in a couple years when some of their rookies mature.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

atlanta and florida will make pushes. itll be a tough nl east

B

Lets be realistic. If not for Babe Ruth, the Yankees never would have won as many. Why? Because players wanted to be drafted by the Yankees after his era. Also it is and always has been the #1 market in baseball.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

ok...i suppose if not for michael jordan, the bulls wouldnt have won. if not for wayne gretzky, the oilers wouldnt have won the stanley cup. if not for john elway, the broncos would have never won the super bowl.

whats your point? every team gets good players sometime.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Yeah but the Yankees have had more great players than any other team. That's my point. Baseball is also more popular in the northeast than anywhere else in the country. The Yankees were in the perfect spot to play.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

well sure, but the red sox didnt have that success. the mets havent. so location isnt really it. what exactly is the point? having the most great players isn't a bad thing, is it? how does that detract from the team greatness?

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

It's the name. Because of one player, the organization has thrived over the years. They've always been able to get good players because of him. And New York is the biggest market in baseball. If Babe Ruth played for the Red Sox his whole career, it would have been Boston that thrived. Or if it were the Mets, had they existed then, the same would be true. Ruth is the best player of all time. Of course he is going to impact the team he played for generation after generation.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

yanks had a heck of a team despite babe. there was a reason they called it murderers row. they had gehrig, lazzeri, etc. ruth was not far and away the HR leader every year, only because gehrig was right on his tail. so the yanks would have probably won themselves some world series if they had just gehrig.

B
brothermanOG 2004 · jp

Yeah, no question they could win without him, but the Yankee mystique begins with him. He is a larger than life player. No one else has come close to that. And that does effect what kind of players a team will get down the road.

The fact remains, Boston has better pitching and the combination of Ramirez and Ortiz outdoes anything the Yankees have. Both are clutch. Boston has had the lead for most of the year. Unless the Yankees upgrade their pitching, they won't make it.

i so miss manny ramirez..when he went to boston i boycotted baseball for a year..but then i realized that by me boycotting wouldn't do anything and i'm just missing out on alot of fun..so i like baseball again. speaking of boston, is wakefield on the 15 day DL?

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Yes he is.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

detroit isnt gonna win the al. they are ok, and leylands a good manager, but i think theyre gonna start fading.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I don't know if they'll fade but when October rolls around I wouldn't be surprised if they get beat. They're a young team.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

see, i thought that they would fade too, but they are still crazy solid. maybe they will choke..

1. a-rod is the best all around.. and will remain an all star for many more years.
Pujols, talking with a sports medicine knowlodge, is not going to last long.. his frame, size, and swing will only give him like 3-4 decent years. he's going to get hurt ... a lot.

2. mets and yankees split the series this year, no? .. so mets aren't better.

3. yankees getting more hitters is dumb
pitchers please.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

That's what I think about Pujols too. A-Rod will break Aaron's record one day if he stays healthy. I'm not counting Bonds since he cheated.

The Mets got beat up by Boston before the Yankee series. I think if they played them first, it would have been a different outcome.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

ohh i HATE bonds!!! i'm so glad he didn't make it to the allstar game

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Bonds is done.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Maybe his enormously large head will explode one day.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

someone offered me bonds for schilling in fantasy baseball before the season

sure am glad i didnt take that

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I'd be calling you a bafoon if you did that. LOL!

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

So I'm thinking Detroit is going to take AL. They are on fire. I think Jim Leyland has something to do with that. So maybe world series will be Tigers vs Mets.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Jim Leyland is a good manager. He is good with young guys. That's the matchup I was thinking too, but I could also see White Sox vs Mets too.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

white sox has solid pitching. at the beginning of the season i thought for sure that detroit would fizzle out mid-june. but i was totally wrong.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Definitely. Their starters threw at least 8 innings each game in last years World Series. If you have starters that can do that, you are in a good position to repeat.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

i thought for sure that buehrle was going to get the cy young last year..i was so disappointed when he didn't. he's awesome.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Yeah he's solid. 16 wins usually isn't enough to get a Cy Young though. Typically a guy needs 18 wins or more. Randy Johnson is the exception to the rule, but he had a sick ERA and high strikeout rate the year he won with 13 wins or so.

mandie mandieOG 2001 ·

wow he only had 16 wins? i was thinking it was more. how about his belly flop on the tarp? classic. i also love how ozzie guillen had to have sensitivity training.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Didn't see the belly flop. Was it a thing of beauty? Guillen is a psycho. LOL!
