fear of man

thefunkyfresh by thefunkyfresh · Oct 23, 2003 · 218 views · Journal

man, i'm very upset by this... i've worked at my company for over 2 and a half years, and the people in my group that i work with every day i'm here know i'm a witness but they don't really know much more past that. i've only really witnessed to one of them, a young mother who actually studied or her mom studied or something a long time ago. But I've never made a point of really witnessing to any of them. i've always had a problem with witnessing to people I know, it just takes a lot for me. it's an embarrassing and retarded weakness, and i'm really honestly working on it.

anyway, i'm leaving the company next week for a new job. the reason i'm mad is becausei just spoke to the one i had witnessed to in the past and she said that they were planning on getting me a cake before i left, but they remembered that i was a witness, and that witnesses "can't celebrate anything". so basically they were under the impression that witnesses are not allowed to celebrate anything. so they don't know anything at all about our beliefs. i'm not mad that i'm not getting cake, i'm mad at myself for not at least making these people aware of what i believe in. apparently, they have a distorted view of JWs, and i'm at fault partially, for not correcting that view.

ugh... maybe i can talk to them before i leave. i'm just really mad at myself and ashamed over this right now.

don't tear yourself up over this. if you want to do it, you can since you still have the time. besides, look at it this way-they practically asked you to witness to them. Jehovah set it up for you. go for it!

I think this fear is natural. Its counter-intuitive for most people to want to talk to relative strangers, or at best passive associates, about potentially explosive topics. Who would naturally go to a person's door and try to share their religion with them? But I'm sure you do that (although I dont' know you). A man on my job's stepfather (but basically real father) died a year ago, and everytime I saw him he had a new story about the heartache he and his mother were going through. I was mad nervous to give him the when someone you love dies brochure. But, what I did, and what I do when I'm nervous (basically everytime) is tell people I know about my desire to witness, kind of like what you did in this journal, and then they tell me experiences they had, and that gets my courage up. I also OF COURSE say a prayer. And then I think of all the holy rollers I work with who blast gospel, have pious bumper stickers, and answer the question "how are you?" with "bathed in teh blood of Christ" and think, Hey, I have soemthing valuable, so why I'm I scared. Then I do it quickly before I lose my confidence. I gave him that brochure, and he was soo appreciative, and now he knows I'm a witness, and it comes up sometimes. I even started a study with one girl on my job, and we studied at lunch. But I REALLY was scared initially. I have to go through that almost every time. But I never regret it in the end.

i love how some people would tell me that just to be safe they learned as a rule that if it is celebrated, we don't celebrate it...

they are celebrating you leaving? Wouldn't it be more like a going away party instead? Just tell them to do that and buy you lunch and many many gifts!

beachbum #10 beachbumOG 2002

what did you tell her when she said that?

forrestina #11 forrestinaOG 2002

i'd rather have that fear. i'm more scared of talking to people at their doors than coworkers or neighbors.
