Things just keep getting worse

walkngplaygrnd by walkngplaygrnd · Jan 22, 2004 · 329 views · Journal

Don't worry, this one isn't necessarily about me.

i've just noticed in the past year or few how bad language on TV has gotten. Between that show Playmakers on ESPN where there's only one curse word they don't use, to Chappelle's Show and South Park on Comedy Central. They actually showed the South Park movie on CC one night UNEDITED. F-Bombs droppin everywhere. I was floored. Even on network TV now, curse words are allowed, and they just bleep them out. It seems to be deteriorating more and more every day.

Now, i don't know if its just me, but I know for a fact that some of my friends use words that would never even been thought of on people's lips years ago. On some level, it bothers me, but on another level, I'm becoming desensitized to it. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I alone? It's even becoming difficult for me to not use some of these words, because I hear them all the time, coming from people I'm close to. Maybe we should ALL be working on our language a little bit more. Maybe it's one of those "faithful in what is least" things that we're overlooking, I don't know. Or maybe I just need to not care.

Try working in the industry where i work, its as if none of them have proper etiquette nor respect for that matter. I can't make anyone talk a certain way but wouldn't it be wonderful if the nasty talk was banned? I can't wait for paradise

yer totally right, and the type of tv shows being showed, like there are popping up all over the networks gay and lesbian shows, its sickening! it makes me hurl

You are definetly not alone. Myself and a few brothers were recently talking about this. A few years ago, 90210 and Melrose Place was really popular. They had strong tv 14 and sometimes M ratings for some episodes. We thought that was something back then, M ratings on prime-time TV!
I personally choose not to watch shows like Playmakers, Nip Tuck, and other M rated shows, because being honest with myself, I see the bad fruitage those other shows produced in me, and my other friends who shared that "Melrose Addiction". For those who have "lived a little" the truth of 1 Cor 15:33 Can Not Be Denied.

see, i think this is an important topic, b/c years ago, our parents never would have say words like "crap" or "Damn"...they would have said things like "hot dog! it's cool outside mabel!"

so, standards have changed. no one has a problem with saying "Crap". and why not?

Excuse my ignorance, and over-sensative concience, but are you saying "why not" to a christian saying such words? Please. Never may that be the case. I've heard crap, but D***. Are you serious? Don't we constantly get information about how the worlds standards are advancing from bad to worst, and how ours shouldn't?

whats the point of pushing the envelope? as Christians we're supposed to maintain our level of decency, not just to stay moral in comparison to the world surrounding us. I think its natural to become desensitized to stuff, which is why we gotta keep on top of it. our clean morals and speech is one of the ways we keep seperate from the world

Have you heard sh**? I was shocked when I heard a certain relation of mine that happens to be an elder use that word once.

I remember a sister in my hall said that in a comment during the watchtower study. She didn't get called on for the rest of the lesson. I think some elderly friends fainted too.

ophelia #6.2.3 opheliaOG 2003

you can't do that!!!....haha, he musta been so embarassed

jay79 #6.2.3.1 jay79OG 2001

Nah, my family doesn't get embarrassed...Esp because my bookstudy consists of me, my parents, my 2 sisters, 2 of my brothers, my brother in law, and this family that studied with my family and came into the truth. So its basically just like a family study.

ophelia #7 opheliaOG 2003

yeah, well, things get incresingly obscene w/each new generation - it's just the way things are...Parents in the 50's thought elvis was the devil..then came ozzy..then came marylin manson/cannibal corpse/insane clown posse(I HATE THEM!...it's like shock music at it's worst)...&..yeah...i've noticed a lota jdubs usin some pretty questionable language...& i always feel like i'm the only one in the group that's bothered by it, lol

I heard a sister say the ā€œsā€ word when she accidentally hit her arm on a railing. My brother and I were just like, " O_O ". Weird. But it's all in your conscience. Btw, is everyone here JWs?

ilikebirds #9.1 ilikebirdsOG 2002

iwz #9.2 iwz

no, this is not an exclusive jw site by any means. it's just a site for my friends and whoever else finds it interesting. although, it's mostly jws.

I know what you mean - when I was younger my brother and I got in so much trouble for saying shut up - NOW my youngest brother calls my dad by his first name and says other things. I don't know what has lessoned, my parents stictness or just the tolerance of profanity.
Its a rough thing, we can be desensitized without even realizing it... Satan keeps reinventing his tactics. Version 2004
