Advertising - Are we paying for it?

modestjesse by modestjesse · Mar 8, 2004 · 422 views · Journal

So I'm sitting here thinking lately about advertising. It's a great industry and they really come up with some great ideas at times. But the more I think about it the more I feel we, the consumer, end up paying for it in the long run.

Think about it. You purchase a car and pull it off the lot. Typically there is a sticker, license plate, holder, tire cover, something advertising the dealer you just purchased it from. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but if Sansone were to put up a bill board, they pay decent money for that, no? So why isn't Sansone paying you for driving around advertising their dealership? If their not, rip that sticker or logo off! DEMAND YOU GET PAID FOR THEIR ADVERTISMENT!

Movie prices continue to go up. I went to see Starsky & Hutch this weekend and I remember, not too long ago, I'd go to the theater and watch movie trivia or a screen changing color while music was being played if I got there early. Now I'm seeing commercials for upcoming episodes of ER or shows on TNT. So I have to pay to see commercials now? If TNT or NBC are paying to have their commercials aired before the start of a movie, shouldn't my ticket prices go down now? And don't even get me started on the 10 minutes of trailers before the start of a movie.

I don't mind being forced to see advertisements everywhere I turn, that's expected. I'm sure they have families to feed too. But I am tired of paying money out when I should be getting some sort of discount because of advertising. You want to show commercials before the movie, fine, give me $2 off my ticket price. You want me to advertise for your car dealership? Sure, either knock $5,000 from the total price of the car or mail me a check for $50 a month for you're advertising.

That's my vent for the week.

i hate commercials before movies, what the heck im paying 10$ as it is!

tinser #1.1 tinserOG 2002

wow, i never thought about it that way...they should lower the price in that case...not keep raising it

ekulu #1.2 ekuluOG 2002

you pay $10 to go se ea movie? ur goin to the wrong place

magnum #1.2.1 magnumOG 2001

welcome to ny, you try to find it cheaper then that besides a matinee

tinser #1.2.2 tinserOG 2002

yeah, ny has crazy expensive movie theaters. You might be able to find one for 9 bucks...but for the dollar more, it's nicer to have stadium seating

tinser #1.2.3 tinserOG 2002

oh, and don't even ask what the popcorn prices are

hunkpapap #1.2.3.1 hunkpapapOG 2003

i like the dancing popcorn thingies...

fivezero #1.3 fivezeroOG 2003

I agree with this. I'm seeing all kinds commercials before movies now and i HATE IT. prices should go DOWN if this is to continue. UGH. I LOVE previews tho.

juicymango #2 juicymangoOG 2003

Everytime I buy a new Mercedes or Jag, i immediately take the sticker off the back of it.

skaorsk8 #2.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

if you ever have a jag that's a couple weeks old that you're tired of, please send it to me.

juicymango #2.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

oh yeah, definitely.

completely agree with what you're saying here. we have commercials on tv because it pays for the FREE service, why do we need them at movie theatres?
I think we should start a walk-out boycott. anytime we go to the movies if we see commercials, we immediately get up and walk out and demand our money back. if enough people did it, they'd take notice. (I'm talking like a national-scale thing)

skaorsk8 #3.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

dean, i would definitely do this. i should be paid to watch advertisements. in school, when we watched "channel one", all the classrooms got free TVs and shown a news program every day in exchange for showing us ads. that system made sense. this - doesn't.

magnum #3.2 magnumOG 2001

we pay for cable and still see comercials, explain that one...

skaorsk8 #3.2.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

the idea was, originally, you wouldn't...

tinser #3.2.2 tinserOG 2002

you don't have commercials on all cable though. Like hbo or starz.

deanh77 #3.2.3 deanh77Founder

I'm talking broadcast. which is completely free. cable's another deal. UHF/VHF is all around us, and if you get good enough reception where you live with some rabbit ears or a roof antenna, then just use that. save yourself $40 a month.

But you won't get as many channels. even if you get "Family" Basic cable (all broadcast+USA, Discovery, MTV etc.) which all have advertising, it'll cost you because the cable company provides a better service than broadcase, and because those cable channels charge the cable company to carry them. you pay the price, because you want quality reception, and you want more choice of channels.

prices are def. overinflated though.

this sounds like a title from the awake! magazine

ekulu #4.1 ekuluOG 2002

that's the same thing i thought when i saw it

modestjesse #5 modestjesseOG 2004

What's up with Disney showing comercials now, didn't they used to be a premium channel?

juicymango #6 juicymangoOG 2003

don't forget to watch the mooooovie
don't forget to watch the SHOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

la la la la la la laaaa laaaaa

starshiptrooper #7 starshiptrooperOG 2003

also, If u like a band, u buy thier T-shirt for like 30 bucks, and thats free advertising for THEM! They should pay YOU!!!!!!!

malibu #7.1 malibuOG 2001

this is absolutely why i don't wear abercrombie and fitch, aeropastle and things of thins nature. they are crummy clothes that everyone has and all i do is walk around and advertise them. and ALL their clothes have their name on it. i hate it.

T
#7.1.1 toxicgirlOG 2003

AMEN to this, I agree 1000%. I'll see a shirt that I like but will be totally disgusted to see the brand name in huge letters on the back or whatever. And if you get a shirt from A&F, you spend 30 bucks to advertise their name.

My family prefers to advertise for that store in other ways. My brother named our cat Abercrombie. We just call him Abe.

socalgal #7.1.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

i agree!!! If i wasn't in the industry i'm in, i would NEVER wear the clothing. I wouldn't pay $30 to sport a surf logo name. it only costs like $1 to make the shirts....

thatdarngirl #7.1.2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Oh but they do have some really cute stuff sometimes..

malibu #7.1.2.1 malibuOG 2001

yeah in skirts and bags. but they don't say the name so i have no objection to that. but $36 for a shirt that says their name? and that's ALL it says? that's just ridiculous!!!

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Seriously..just got buy a plain white t-shirt at Rag Shop and write Abercrombie on it with a black marker.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003

that would be so punk rock

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

You know..I was gonna add those exact words to the end of my post..and I didn't.

deanh77 deanh77Founder

yeah, I like Gap jeans, but I wouldn't buy a Gap shirt that Says "GAP" in huge letters across my chest.

I'd wear band t-shirts, because at least your advertising your favorite band and get them more attention (especially if they're underground/unkown)

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

I'm the same way. I get Gap stuff thats subtle. And I love my lil band shirts. THE SUNSHINE WILL RULES! MELT BANANA RULES!

iwz iwz offtopic

do you actually like melt banana??

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

Yeah, I saw 'em with Tomahawk, Melvins and Isis in NYC. MB were like NOTHING i've ever heard before. I was instantly attracted. It's like yelpy japanese sludge punk!

omegatweeter omegatweeterOG 2003

melt banana? is that from the banana republic?

iwz iwz

wow. they grate on me man, i can't stand them for more than a minute. i don't like the whole grind/wack sound they have going on.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 iwz

Hahaha, they're nuts. Most of their songs are like a minute or two long, so that's just right for you.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003 iwz

that's nothing compared to sunshine will, they were the worst thing i've ever heard...but the shirt was 5 bucks so i bought it

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 toxicgirl

brella, you've never heard melt banana! you'd...desintegrate.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003 fivezero

i most certainly have! you have played some songs for me, i may not look like i am listening when you play your music for me but i am.

ilikebirds #8 ilikebirdsOG 2002

of course you're paying for advertising. thats the whole point.
thats why companies advertise. it's incorporated into the price.

ilikebirds #8.1 ilikebirdsOG 2002

aside from that , most advertising is a convenience for you..
" oh man i just threw up all over my shirt.. i need a washing machine ... where do i get one "
*turns on tv to watch brooke burke tour the world and get wild*
' heeey it's craaazzzaaay eddddieee we have washing machines alll over the place ready to wash everythign wooo hooo '
" ohh maybe i'll go to crazzzaaaay eddies"

juicymango #9 juicymangoOG 2003

I thought it was hilaroius in high school when kids purposely bought stuff with names right on the clothes so you can see where they shop.

Because you know, that makes you cool

I remember one time at lunch, this girl walked by this snotty girl table, and she was wearing the same shirt as one of the snotty girls, and the snotty girl yelled out "Hey at least I got my shirt at the Mall not K-mart!!" and it was SOOOO GAY hahaha i remember i thought that was soooooooo stupid

the shirt was ugly anwyay

thatdarngirl #9.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Haha that's the best part! when the item of clothing is so ugly it should be burned.
