Wedding songs

web-toedchloe by web-toedchloe · Sep 28, 2004 · 382 views · Journal

I'm meeting with our wedding DJ to discuss wedding songs. He's a very cool guy, everyone that's been to weddings he's done says he's great; plus he's a witness, so we don't have to worry about inappropriate songs.

We're adamant only about having no country music and no theme dances. Sorry, the electric slide and the chicken dance are the lamest songs in the world to me.

What songs to you like dancing to at weddings?
What do you hate to hear?

Oh man when my DJ said "you have to have those dances, it's for the guests, they are the ones putting money in the envelopes"

I remember I was pretty annoyed.

We had the chicken dance. UGH.

Um this is gonna be ghey but I really love J.Lo's "let's get loud" or whatever that song is, it's so great.

You gotta have Latino Love. Any latino music is just amazing to dance to haha... (and i normally HATE dancing... i really stink at it)

I'm at weddings EVERY weekend now, and really it totaly varies from one to the other. There can be one song at one wedding and everyone's dancing, same song at another wedding and the floor is empty. I think it depends on everyone's mood. And stuff.

My old congregation is very "dancy" and so is my family and all of our friends, but the new congregation that I'm in with my fiance is full of older people. (Our service report indicated that 80% of the publishers are over 30). So we're going for a lot of younger dances, but lots of Sinatra, too.

juicymango #1.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

oooh... Sinatra is good times.

at the wedding this past weekend, the DJ played a lot of like, funky jazzy groovy type stuff, and i wanted to dance SO bad haha...

beachbum #2 beachbumOG 2002

YEEEEEEES! BAN the electric slide! BAN IT! i love you. can you throw in a swing song or two for us?

web-toedchloe #2.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Oh, there'll be lots of swing. Don's wearing a zoot suit, after all. We also wanted to do a special swing dance with just the bridal party.

beachbum #2.1.1 beachbumOG 2002

haha sweet. does he need to borrow any accessories from andrew? hat, chain, wingtips?

web-toedchloe #2.1.1.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

He's looking for a new pair of wing tips; his soles are worn through. He has chains, and I don't think he and Andrew are the same shoe or hat size (Don has a very round head and big feet. He's a weeble.)

sunshyne #2.1.1.2 sunshyneOG 2004

the andrew in my mind is always wearing a hard hat and workboots.

beachbum beachbumOG 2002

hahahaha

malibu #2.1.2 malibuOG 2001

yes!!!!! very exciting. hint: don't dance swimg with someone really good (like jeremy) when you're not that good (me).

beachbum #3 beachbumOG 2002

personally i hate when they play 'celebrate' and all those other 80's/early 90's songs. they have no beat-how do you even dance to that without looking completely spastic? i prefer something with a hip-hoppy or techno beat.

web-toedchloe #3.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

You know us well enough to know there'll be no gay songs like those.

specialk #4 specialkOG 2003

Anything latin or swing always works. We had a few swing songs at our reception, and there were a few couples who OWNED the dance floor. My brother-in-law literally FLIPPED my husband's sister (it was easy....he's 6'7", she's 5'6"), while they danced, and some of our other friends were doing the whole spinning thing. It was like we had professionals on the floor. It rocked.

web-toedchloe #4.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Yeah, all of our friends are like that and Don and I can do the flips. It'll be cool.

specialk #4.1.1 specialkOG 2003

Hahaha...I can too, but there was NO way I was trying it in my wedding dress. I was having a hard enough time keeping the dress up, hahaha.

web-toedchloe #4.1.1.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

I actually had them alter the dress to be a little higher than usual so we can dance more easily. That would be the ultimate; flipping me in a huge dress with a cathedral train bustled to my butt.

specialk specialkOG 2003

I should have had them do that.....I actually didn't have mine fitted at all, which was great. We had a very short engagement, so time was of the utmost importance. But walking down the aisle that day proved to be more difficult than I had thought....the front of my dress kept wanting to go under my toes. It was fine after it was bustled.....until the weight on the back of the dress wanted to keep pulling the top down, hahaha. Fun wedding times.

beachbum #4.2 beachbumOG 2002

if you do play any latin songs, "suavamente" and "besame" are good ones

web-toedchloe #4.2.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

I don't know anything about latin music - we're leaving that category to the DJ.

sunshyne #4.2.2 sunshyneOG 2004

just dont play both...elvis crespo overload! how about some dlg or el general?

malibu #4.2.3 malibuOG 2001

no,no everyone always plays besame. always, always.

beachbum #4.2.3.1 beachbumOG 2002

but i LIKE it!!!

malibu malibuOG 2001

i can't take it anymore. its good but i hear it sooo much. they'll probably play it and i'll dance but i just hear it a lot and then it gets stuck in my head.

ilikebirds #5 ilikebirdsOG 2002

BUST A MOVE is a must.

House of Pain : Jump Around!!!!!!!!!

web-toedchloe #6.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

You know you guys have to see how high you can toss Donovan during that song...

violetboregaurd #7 violetboregaurdOG 2003

I can honestly say there will be NO chicken dance or hokey pokey at my wedding. I have been a bridesmaid one to many times and it's all ridiculous.

I mean the electric slide has to beat out the conga line... even then those two are not in the top five.

socalgal #7.1 socalgalOG 2003

i hate the electric slide AND the conga line. SO lame

T
#7.2 toxicgirlOG 2003

I've never been to a wedding that played the hokey pokey

sunshyne #8 sunshyneOG 2004

the chicken dance in italian is cool imo. reminds me of good times with family and friends. then there is always the tarantala.

forrestina #8.1 forrestinaOG 2002

sunshyne #8.1.1 sunshyneOG 2004

web-toedchloe #9.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

: )

superhero #10 superheroOG 2004

i hate that stupid "last dance" song. what is this telling us? it starts out slow, it gets faster, it has terrible singing. it's almost like someone said "let's write a song to make people hate us and go home". and it works. ugh.

T
#10.1 toxicgirlOG 2003

i agree 10,000%

superhero #11 superheroOG 2004

if i ever get married, my wedding will be a "Smiths" theme. We will only play Morrisey. and James Taylor. Sweet caroline .. BAUM BAUM BAUM

rocksupastar #11.1 rocksupastarFounder

i will boycott this wedding...

shessomepirate #11.1.1 shessomepirateOG 2004

hunkpapap #11.2 hunkpapapOG 2003

web-toedchloe #12.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

My fiance loves the cure too. We're going to have a lot of their songs.

katiedid #12.2 katiedidFounder

ahhhh, "catch"!

violetboregaurd #13 violetboregaurdOG 2003

i think that elton john's "your song" is verrrry cool. vintage - original.

malibu #14 malibuOG 2001

are there going to be candelabras at the wedding?

web-toedchloe #14.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Hopefully not. I don't want to be scared at my own wedding. :)

thatdarngirl #14.2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Aww..I <3 Candelbras and Potato mashers!

malibu #14.2.1 malibuOG 2001

especially zesters.

socalgal #15 socalgalOG 2003

do you know what song you're dancing to for the father/daughter dance?

violetboregaurd #15.1 violetboregaurdOG 2003

what about -- Time in a bottle Jim Croche

or -- Kind & Generous Natalie Merchant.

web-toedchloe #15.2 web-toedchloeOG 2001

My dad is dodging the selection of that song. He's more sentimental than he'd like everyone to believe. I'm pushing for "Last to Leave" by Arlo Guthrie, but it's very sad. Donovan thinks I'm trying to make my dad cry with that one. ;)

socalgal #15.2.1 socalgalOG 2003

aw thats a good one.

My best friend danced with her father to that one song by Michael Crawford, Take her She's mine, OMG let me tell you she was balling and so was i. it was SO sweet!
