Job Advice
(Again)
So, I am pretty sure that I'm going to look for a job with the Starbucks company. This is my dilemma: ideally, I'd like to work for the corporate office in my area, so I would feel like my degree is being put to use, and probably make more money. (And it has a little to do with my pride) :-) Now, getting that job would probably take a while, being that there are no office positions open immediatly.
Should I now apply and work at one of the retail stores in the mean time? (As a barrista) And if so, should I tell them I'm applying for a job with corporate?
Advice please!
For all of you that don't know, the reason I want to work for Starbucks is for the benefits...full health, dental and vision for you and your spouse for only 20 hours a week! That in itself makes it worth it. Yip yip.

Yeah, I've heard they have awesome benefits....a sister out here used to work for them for that reason alone.
I would take the job, and let them know when you do, what your eventual plan is....you're right, it could take a little while, but ideally, most companies prefer to promote and hire from within, because it shows company loyalty. When I worked for Victoria's Secret, I got hired as seasonal part-time right around the time a manager was leaving. They promoted me before even looking at other prospects, because I was already with the company.
I say go for it....the benfits alone make it worth it.
i think the biggest benefit would be having all the coffee you want
man i would love to work at a coffee shop
but only if i didn't have to actually make the drinks, just drink them

Try and forget the pride issue. I know it's hard trust me. I've been through the same exact situation. Thing is, it doesn't matter what job anyone has. Just having a job period is a good thing, and a feat. Are purpose is not what we do for living .. and the only reason we should have jobs is to support ourselves. At the end of the day, Jobs are just jobs.
When I wanted to move to London, I wanted to make an effort to secure a job, and favourably a "corporate" one before leaving on the plane to London. It didn't happen, but I said I don't care, I'm gonna go anyway, and worry about a job after getting there. Well, I was in London for month, pounding the pavement, being sorta picky about the jobs I would apply for. After a month passed and nothing worked out, I said, I gotta forget about "pride" and just try to get anything, even if it means being a bike courier, or serving tea, or what have you.. you get the idea. Well, I ended up starting to apply to such things, including Starbucks in Notting Hill. I said to myself, who cares if I have to Starbucks even though I have a Web Design degree, I'd be leaving in my own apartment, and so on, and at least I'd have an income. Looking for something corporate and then not getting anything, means zero income.. so what's the point. Working at Starbucks, MickyD's, whatever it is, it's respectable 'cause it's an honest living.
hey, when you're right -- you're right.
why thank you .
Whoa, I wrote that post up like a foreigner just learning English. haha . Don't think I ever made so many spelling and grammer mistakes. I sound like a Tajikistan dude.
I take offense and at the same time forgive you! :-)
You're Tajik?
Uzbek is where my family name comes from (great gran, so not sooo far back)... so it's in the neighborhood.
See, that's why I didn't say Uzbek instead. j/k. You know I wasn't serious right? There's a native Tajik family in my hall and it just came to my mind first and we get away with joking with each other. At the end of the day, we're all from the Middle East.
:-)
Do you get all the benefits if you work in the retail area too, because that is nice.
I would totally suggest working in the retail store while you are trying to get something at corporate. You show them that you really want to work for the company.
I would let them know that you are trying to work for corporate up front, that shows you have ambitions. They might even know when something opens up before you do. Also, working in the store is a good way to get to know the management, how it works, and quite possibly corporate employees. This might help when you apply, because they will remember you name.
Haven't they been the #1 fortune 500 to work for for the past few years by forbes? Sounds like a good place to work to me.
#29 isn't so shabby either...

Just remember Jahanna if you dont use your degree you just waisted your time and money getting it....
i would SOOO work at starbucks...i always think that if i lost my job i would DEF go and work there. dont worry about degrees etc this system is nearing its end and you just do what you need. Also, like you stated, you will be able to get a job in corporate at a later date. just have fun and enjoy yourself in the meantime....and benefits at only 20 hrs a week...what more could you ask for.
thanks for all the advice guys! i put my resume into corporate and at a retail store, i'll letcha know what happens!
So I knew a barista who worked at a Starbucks. She said that they added up all the tips for the day and doled them out according to the hours that everyone worked for the day, not the money collected during the hours the people worked.
Isn't that communism? I asked....
