Web Design Courses/Schools

mrenticon by mrenticon · Apr 8, 2002 · 128 views · Geek

I decided to move this out of the Musings section.

I'm looking for suggestions of good courses to take at good schools for web design. What courses are good? What schools have good teachers?

I'm thinking I should learn HTML, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL. Your thoughts?

Please post links to school-sites if you have them. Thanks.

What do you do for a living now and why do you want to switch to this field?

right now i'm living off the state on unemployment. i was doing desktop support work. i believe that with so many layoffs, the need for support personnel has dropped off. my brother-in-law asked if i could do a site for him, so i learned how to do one. i have my own company registered with the state and federal, so i was able to set myself up as a reseller for hosting services, and to find out about affiliates.

i learned that unemployment paid for a friend of mine to go to school for web design. i'm thinking i could do this as a freelancer. i've got some connections for work, but i want to hone my skills with some formal training. so i'm seeking suggestions.

My boyfriend's thinking of starting up his own web design business like you because the job market for even that is kind of dry right now. He went to Northhampton in PA and got his associates, and he's finishing his bachelor's @ East Stroudsburg University. Was is hard to start up your own business?

knowing what and where to register everything was the hard part. doing it was no big deal.

Are you trademarked or are you merely "DBA?" In either case, I may have some questions for you of my own curiosity.

my company is a sole proprietership. if ur by urself, u can register as that, or an S corporation, or a regular corporation or a LLC. feel free to email me, or post.

Actually, I didn't mean what you registered as. Simple misunderstanding. What I meant was, did you trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, D.C. ..or did you just get a DBA ("Doing Business As") license through the county clerk's office? You see, I think I'm pretty sure that what I want is a sole proprietership. I probably wouldn't bother registering as anything else, unless it was a partnership, obviously (and it's not). It's just that I don't know about the specifics on going about setting it up, legally. Plus, I believe that after you file for a trademark, you have to try and sit still for roughly a whole year, before you hear word about its approval. How would I protect myself in the meantime, you know? I guess I would go for the DBA first, then file for the trademark.. that way the DBA holds me over for a year's time. Drop me an eZabel message to my personal inbox -- if you would -- with your e-mail address and/or AIM screenname (if you have one). Thanks.
