Incumbency
I'm looking for a job somewhere in Newark as I go to school there. I've been looking at the nj.com job search everyday, and keeping close tabs on monster.com, but I can't seem to find anything that really seems like it will suit me. Perhaps more accurately, I can't find anything that I think I would be hired for. This job hunt is strange. I've had the same job at the same firm for over 2 years now, and honestly, I'm worried that I won't have the same kind of freedom at any other job. My whole objective is to find something in the same town as my school so that I can go to a class in the morning, go to work for a few hours, then go to another class. I'm very unsure of myself, though. I haven't interviewed for a job in a long time, and what makes me think I could get anyone to facilitate my hours when they probably have another 10 canditates who'll do exactly what's asked of them?
My problem is really experience. I have lots of legal and collection experience, but that's not what I want to continue to do. I want to try to break into architecture, but I have only an iota of experience in that field from when I was 15. I tried to put together an impressive resume, but that makes me nervous too. What if I get an interview because of my "impressive resume" and find out that I'm not really qualified for the job? I know it's not a big deal to walk out of an office building without what you came for, but I think I'd be more disappointed in myself than in my qualifications. Up to this point, I've gone after every opportunity and for the most part, succeeded in my endeavors. Will this be the point that I stop succeeding? Should I just take any job I can get or should I really hold out for something that I think I can do well? I think my whole perspective about employment is what's screwing with my head. I want a job where I can really run things for myself, that's a lot of the reason that I love my job now. Then again, it took me about a year to reach that level. Should I expect that at another job?
Is this something that every young person thinks, or is it just the result of our recession?

Welp as i have just lost my job and will have to start a job hunt seriously not i can say its not to fun. Sending resumes, getting no response or a "i will get back to you" is very dissapointing. I wouldnt worry about feeling you dont know enough, plent of people with no real bussiness being in the field they are, are there cause they acted confident even though they cant tie there shoelaces :P Welp back to my sad little search :/
Thanks, Joe. Misery loves company.
we can start a club :) I was lookin before i found out i got laid off but not really hardcore active, put my resume out to alot of places but now since i got no job i gotta search harder, but i think it will still show same results. Not many companys at all hiring in my field, i may have to do some manual labor again till things pick up or i find something.
I feel for ya man. I had a decent job, then I was laid off for a long time. it is a *tough* job market, especially for someone just out of college. I got a job, I love it, it feels so good to be working again. its not perfect, the commute sucks right now, and I'm not making what I want/should, but hopefully things will change.
Yea you can't expect the freedoms you have now with a new job. that takes time. when you get a new job you're starting all over again. from the bottom of the ladder, the first rung. So expect that. But time will change it. So find a job, any job, in the field you want to get into... even if it's the mailroom clerk opening letters and licking them to check for anthrax as long as it's in an architecture firm... any janitor can move to ceo.. with a few classes and some friends...so go for it.
ahh tys wisdom, i mean how can you not get a job now after reading that?
ty def has a way with words...
That's really sweet, Ty. Thanks.
i dunno what the heck i wanna do. whatever, i'll deal with it day by day i guess
as if Year by Year is an option.
hey. shut up.
I'm like you, diana. I always want a job where i can do whatever I want. But, that's pretty rare. The only way you can have that is if you own a business and run it yourself. But that's a lotta work too.
Or you can be a professional "do whatever i want-er" ...
