Black Plague

I took European History AP (college level) this year for many reasons, one of which is it is a barrel of endless laughs with the people in it as well as Mr. Higgins (my teacher who I love). Today, while reading sample DBQ's (for those of you who don't know, DBQ stands for Data Base Questions. The nightmare of every AP student. It's like an essay only using documents that they give you to use as well..it's fun..trust me) written by actual students on the Black Plague. I've typed the following up for everyone's enjoyment because it had me laughing so hard I almost cried..keep in mind this is an Advanced Placement student, that's higher the honors classes. I tried my best to keep the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as much like the original as possible.

Within all history of every nation inside our world comes disastrous destruction called a plague. A plague can be best described as a point to start over. Another word for plague is massacre. A plague can involve any cause from greed for coming inheritance to sickness. There are an innumerable amount of historical examples involving greed. In Western Lombardy there was a plague involving 40 human people that was caused from a single person implanting fatal substances for the reason of inheriting what "they deserve" more quickly. There have been cases of plagues caused by Animal and human fecies. In England comes a case in which all of England was infected. The cause was primarily due to the clogging of household drains by dog's urine. This type of plague can only be described as completely and wholly inhumane. Some additional sources of plagues include: the anger of God, sickness, torture, and of course Massacres. With the disappointment and anger of a plague comes the required new beginning.

No matter who you are or what you do, life will always turn to ethics and morals in long term effects. A plague is always viewed as sadness, and dishevelmeut. However there are definately positive viewpoints inside of a plague. A plague can rid society of disease causing microorganisms. It can cleanse the earth from toxic dangers. It can also decrease the population size. The population topics will always be in controversy. Overpopulation should be a prime target of action in every government in every nation. It is possible to say that a plague can be a cure to overpopulation. A plague is a useful way of destruction among the world's society.

With every positive effect to a plague comes the moral and ethical issues of adversaries. A plague is destruction of the human race. A plague is the destruction of any living organism. A palgue is morally and ethically wrong in every way. It is murder of the first degree and there is no argument for that fact.

There are plagues affecting the entire world. In the bible, there is spoken of a flood that completely destroyed evil and cleansed the earth. Nevertheless it seems as though Europe seemed to contain the majority in historical destruction. England, Vienna, Italy, Ottoma Empire, Germany, and France all experienced very heavy plague's. Withe the seperation of the Ottoman Empire and Germany came revolts and insurrections. With a revolt or insurrection the Government of that country, Generally, has no choice but to intervene and stop these moral and ethical acts from internally destroying their country. Thus a plague may be necassarry in some experiences. In France came the plague involving the revolution. With revolution comes a plague. Many citizens of France died in the streets, prisons, and guillotine. Thus in France this plague was not entirely necassarry. Therefore a plague is both a good and bad experience and in most cases cannot be halted.

Between the mid-fourteenth century and the eighteenth century comes the greatest plague that all of Europe has ever encountered. One great flaw in stoping or curing a plague is knowing what caused it. WItht he mortality rate being 1/3 of the entire continents population comes an extreme difficulty in finding a host or cause. not knowing the cause of your infection is the worst diagnosis possible. Witht he plague in Europe comes a highly positive result. Killing 25 million people was depressing, but required. Can any person even comprehend what Europe would be today with the siblings of those 25 million dead. I don't think that anybody can comprehend that fact. Within the plague in Europe came great and significant advances in economic problems, science, technology, and society. Without the present day advanced European economy the world would suffer beyond belief. Europe would be a third or possibly fourth world country. The plague in Europe is just one example of present day positive effect. There will never got an era without plague. It is required for survival.

Ok, I will ignore the extremely bad grammar and sentence structure, and comment only on the points the author was making.

Hahaha, I just love how he says "A plague is a useful way of destruction among the world's society."

"A palgue is morally and ethically wrong in every way. It is murder of the first degree and there is no argument for that fact."

A plague is morally wrong and murder in the first degree? Is this guy mixing up real humans with microorganisms that are just fighting for survival as much as humans are? A plague does not happen on purpose, a plague does not kill people intentionally. Nowhere do I see him mention anything about plagues being used as a biological weapon. Is the reader to infer this?

"With a revolt or insurrection the Government of that country, Generally, has no choice but to intervene and stop these moral and ethical acts from internally destroying their country. I assume we are supposed to believe the bubonic plague was intentionally released by the French government as a biological weapon? This kid is nuts! haha

In no way is the death of 25 million people positive or required. He tries to make a point by saying that the plague caused the advancement of economy, science, technology, and society. I'll give him that, but how is this required? Moreso, how is the death of 25 million people positive??

Sheesh, what a wacko. I so would have given this kid a D grade or lower if I was grading his paper. He's got his facts all wrong, and mixes up ideas and statements from one paragraph to the next. And his use of english is horrible!

thatdarngirl #4.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

I just like the fact that I really don't think the kid knows the definition of a plague.

iwz #4.1.1 iwz

haha, i know. man, so crazy. i feel bad for that kid, we're all making fun of him

thatdarngirl #4.1.1.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Well..I thought about it for a while, after my sister and I had this in depth conversation on the technique used. I really hope that the person just didn't care about their grade on the exam and just wrote this as a joke. And a very good joke because it wasn't just like write about something not on topic, but write about the topic in the dumbest way possible.

i wish i had the time not only to read that article, but to critique it as well... i'm still reading my sept. watchtowers

haha. "Can any person even comprehend what Europe would be today with the siblings of those 25 million dead."

yeah, that would be quite a scene... the brothers and sisters of people who died a thousand years ago roaming the streets. that would be odd.
