A Stupid Sport
Ok guys, so here it is...looks like I'm going to be trying snowboarding for the first time on Saturday...(unless something cooler/more important comes up). Anyone have tips/pointers? I've spent more time rollerblading than doing anything else, which was why I was always resistant to strapping both feet to a giant tounge depressor. CERRATO YOU BETTER BE GIVING ME A LESSON.

WEAR KNEEPADS-the soft ones made for boarding not hard ones made for rollerblading. And if you are going to fall, try to take out as many skiiers as possible when you go down.
yeah, and a helmet... i think i got a concussion even WITH the helmet my first time, i hit my head constantly. and wrist guards, and a huge butt pad. basically you wanna have so much body protection on that you'll look like a giant twinkie roaming the slope
haha. helmet f@g
my #1 tip: take a lesson from a trained instructor.
you can surely pick it up, as many do, simply by trial and error, or by getting some pointers like this, and that's fine. but, taking a lesson will make a HUGE difference. my wife and her sister are both novice-to-intermediate snowboarders, and when we went out to colorado they were both having a lot of trouble on the slopes. they took a quick lesson and it made 100% difference. like night and day. seriously. take a lesson.
Prepare for butt pain! haha
Sorry Dan the only people i help to teach snowboarding are hot girls
yeah??? too bad you don't know any hot girls!!!! (ok kidding but DUDE YOU BETTER be free Friday night!! You know!!)
I gotta get someone to teach me this year. I promised myself I'd try it once before I sold the snow board I inherited to someone.
Just relax, and dont try to rush to keep up with everyone else, unless that motivates you, thats what i did, i boarded with buncha good boarders my first few times, bad idea for your first year, but i did learn how to board better... but whatever works.
actually boardin with people who are really got helps you i think, motivates you to do things u wouldnt otherwise do and improves your skills. So follow them psychos goin down the trails who laugh at the thought of speed checkin. Althought this advice is only for someone who has gone at least 2 or 3 times and knows how to stop and such :P
yeah, supastar & magnum are totally right. That is how i learned. my first time i took a group lesson & learned NOTHING. They showed me how to skate around a little that's it. I ended up bruising my ribs when i hit a pole b/c no one taught me how to turn or STOP!!! Let your friends teach you. They will be more brutal but you will learn faster. go aggressive.
tip for experienced snowboarders teaching novices:
since they are gonna be going pretty slow compared to you, this is the perfect time to practice riding switch if you're not already that good at it. It'll make you feel less frustrated, since you'll both be learning something new.
exactly, im decent at riding swith as it is but i could be alot better for example be able to hit jumps switch. I gotta teach my sister this year so ill be practicin switch alot i imagine
what's "practicing switch"? is that switching your back leg to the front...?
whatever way u go down turn 180 degrees around thus the opposite way
thanks, i thought so. i guess that works up your leg muscles evenly.
that's true, but it's also very helpful in snowboarding to be able to ride facing either way down the mountain. if you riding one way and "switch" around to face the other way, it's like learning how to ride all over again, almost like trying to play a lefty guitar if you're a righty.
or trying to do anything lefty when you are a righty.
yep. if you're regular, its riding goofy; if you're goofy, its riding regular. Also called fakie.
DANNY! I suggest making out a will BEFORE you go :)
clearly you want something of mine, don't you, courtney...WELL YOU CAN'T HAVE MY SOUL!!
dude, i thought she said she wanted you to MAKE OUT before you go.. i was wondering... LOL!
lol first 2 times i read it i thought that also
