Learning to Cook

thatdarngirl by thatdarngirl · Dec 12, 2002 · 325 views · · · Journal

Malibu and I have found that we need to learn to cook. Not that we plan on being the traditional house wife-staying home all day to prepare a meal for our husbands-anytime in the future, but knowing to cook is a good survival skill. Eating is also good and to eat yummy food-when no one wants to make it for you-you have to know how to cook. Anyone know of any good recipes? Deserts, soups, salads, bread, entrees..anything will do!

I love to cook... and obviously love to eat! Some of the best things you can do to enhance the flavor and appeal of some basic meals is seasoning. For example, marinade steak in some red wine and garlic for 1/2 hour before cooking... if you want to make pasta, use a high quality sauce (like Newman's or Five Brothers) and add a little red wine and basil to enhance the flavor. Cooking is easy and sometimes the simplest touches can enhance flavor tremendously! Also, get to know a crock pot really well... it's a busy person's best friend.

oh OH! that just HURT to read! "use a high quality sauce (like Newman's or Five Brothers)" what happend to making your OWN sauce? Jar sauce?!?! thats like sacrelige in my house. haha

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

i think i've had jar sauce maybe once in my life...

delliott101 delliott101OG 2002 ·

Um.. I DO make my own sauce, as Katie, Mike and a few others can testify... but I don't want to overwhelm the girl by giving her a sauce recipe. BUT, if you must know, I make it in a crock pot, 2 cans tomato puree (usually Pope brand tomatoes), 1 can crushed tomatoes, 1 can paste, a few handfuls of fresh basil, plenty of fresh garlic, some romano cheese, red wine, salt and pepper and olive oil. I cook it for AT LEAST 2 days.

women should know how to cook. its part of their inherent skills and abilities. i mean if a woman doesnt cook, than what kind of woman is she? its like an oxymoron

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

solomon says the capable wife wakes up before the sun to make dan eggs and waffles

boredatwork boredatworkOG 2002 ·

I hate to agree with the guys on such a macho thing but it's true. A woman should know how to cook at least something. She doesn't have to be a chef but ... you need to know how to make something. I know a girl who got married and couldn't even make pasta.

malibu malibuOG 2001 ·

hahahah it sounds like me. i swear. one time my mom told me to make for dinner an already made pizza, easy right? NO! being the bad cook i am i figured i was being good and read the directions- put pizza on pan and bake for ex. amount of time. and you know what i forgot? that there is cardboard on the bottom of the frozen pizza. i am such a dissapoint my to my italian, puerto rican, and irish family's.

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

i agree. a woman without cooking skills is like a man without a gut.

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

I Agree to this also, woman just know how to cook, or should anyway.
I have a great way to make pinapple chicken,,its to die for, atleast I hear
Pinapple Chicken

Pieces of chicken breast boneless

bowl with a lid, tupperware, yada yada yada

clean chicken

pour some canned cut pinapple on the bottom of the bowl

place your clean chicken on top

pour more pinapples on top of your chicken, depands on how much chicken your gunna make, but you might need 2 cans of pinapple.

then pour some honey all over it.

put the lid on

shake it make sure it all mixes up,pinapple juice , pinapples, and honey

then pack it away in the fridge for sometime, depands on how much you want your juices to seep in.

then cook

then get some more pinapple for its last few minutes of cooking, and through em in there,

its really good, and really simple
i also suggest in investing in a crock pot they're GREAT, you can have food cookin while your away at work or school and come hoem to a nice soup or london broil, or sausage sauce,, soo good...

There is this really amazing recipe or TGI Friday's potstickers here. Working and pioneering there is no time to be cooking for hrs so this book "Cooking w/ 5 ingredients" is like my best friend. So great. In it there is this awesome recipe for a broccoli side dish-you steam broccoli then drain it and moisten w/ butter or margarine. Then you sprinkle garlic powder, grated cheese and breadcrumbs on it and mix. you should try to find this book. And the internet is great too.

ok4now ok4nowOG 2002 ·

i love cooking. recipe or not, remember it's an art. i find myself watching alot of emeril and other shows. don't worry so much about amounts, but pay attention to which spices go with which foods. i tried cinammon on my fish once...BIG mistake.

also, don't overcook anything. rubbery fish, charcoal chicken, and leathery steak are not very appetizing.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

let's kick it up a notch! yo does anyone ever watch the naked chef, jamie oliver?? soo cool...that guy is all over the place in England...his wife is SOOO hot, too..."and none of that low-fat malarky", he's always saying

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

did you just say that you watch a naked man handle a crock pot?

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

why on earth would you think cinamon and fish??

deanh77 deanh77Founder ·

seriously. I don't cook and I know that. it sounds horrible. CINNAMON? ughg.

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

haha yeah, it sounds growse!

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

cinnamon on fish ? what was this guy thinking. yea i'm gonna try some salt on pretzels next. weirdo !

ok4now ok4nowOG 2002 ·

it was the only spice i had. i like cinnamon & sugar on toast, so i thought it would sweeten up the fish. i guess that was the sugar...

deanh77 deanh77Founder ·

yeah, I think you went wrong when you thought fish was just like bread.

reaf reafOG 2002 ·

hahahahaha

Sounds weird, but tastes great...a recipe for canned ham. The big can (not spam). You put it in a pan, stick some cloves in it, cherries with the juice, pinnapple with the juice, and a bottle of coke. Stick it in the oven at 350F for about 5 hrs covered then uncover it for about 10 mins. It's soooo good!

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

i don't understand where the cherries come into play.

iwz iwz ·

for the first half of reading that, i thought you were quoting a jingle from an ad or something, it rhymed so much
