Hugs?
by This thought suddenly crossed my mind today durning a science test.... is it wrong to hug? I personally love getting hugs. It's the highlight of my day! But I know that in some congregrations it's very different. I think that hugs are like the best thing you could eeeeeeeeeever get..... except something relating to Superman. Any comments?

this is so funny, cuz in my hall, i'm used to giving girls i know well a hug and most others a kiss on the cheek (you know, a quick lean in for kiss...). anyway, when i went to the movies with some of you guys, i leaned in for the quick kiss, and it was awkward cuz i don't think anyone was expecting that. it's kinda wierd when u visit, ain't it?
and then with guys, i'm used to the handshake where you sorta lock right arms and pat each other with the left hand. but u guys were doing two-handed hugs. (or was that just dave...hmmm)

the young people in our hall were counseled not to hug or kiss on the cheek. the elders told us it was inapropriate. it's really hard for me not to do those things because 1 my culture is like that and 2 i'm an affectionate person.
i don't know what you're talking about all the time when you say "your culture", because you live 15 mins south of me, and you have pretty much lived there your whole life, right? like, are your parents first generation europeans? did they come on on the boat? did they have pony? we ALLL had pony! my sister had pony! my brother had pony! oh please you know what i mean. i was raised more like a european than an american. my italian heritage made me the person i've grown to become. it is my culture. how many americans can say that they had dinner with their ENTIRE family every sunday night growing up? i'm just saying that it's the way i was brought up. (what was the pony thing from i remember that...)

haha i we used to have to sit at the kid's table too. i always wished that i was at the adult table. now that i can sit there, i realize how boring it is and wish i was back at the kids table. i used to love sunday family dinners at my grandparents.
sitting at the big table wasn't so great cus they usually put me on the end by the dog or where two tables meet where it's impossible to keep your dish flat. i miss ma and pa so much. i always think of him when someone overcooks pasta.
one thing weird about Italians...is that the single people wont hug or kiss...well i mean..two single people..opposite sex wont...if one person is married, its cool, otherwise, its not really acceptable. i found that really weird, especially cuz italians are known to be super kissy and affectionate.

unless they can show it to you in print in any of the society's publications, it is just their opinion. my sister cong. is like that and they are crazy not to mention seriously unbalanced about things. Like Tina said-hug rapes are bad, (who wants them anyway?)but hugs are an acceptable form of greeting in this area so no one can say you can't do it. They just come naturally!

haha. we used to be friends w/ this guy who would do what we called "the crush and touch" (remember jenn?). He would hug you real tight w/ his arms low and then somehow touch the top of your butt w/ his hands at the end of the hug. that was def hug rape-gross. but we can't let a couple fools ruin it for the rest of us.

man i ended up dating a girl once because of a hug thing. It was a friend of mine and i hugged her at the end of a wedding reception. She thought that meant i liked her even though i did it to a number of other sisters and she started calling me and hanging out more. The whole time i didn't know it was because of the hug. Anyway that was 3 years ago and now she is amrried and was on the cover of last years wedding awake.....

I have this whole idea of how amazing hugging really is for people. Like..I have this one friend who gets mad a lot and I insist on hugging him all the time even if he tells me not to and punches me when I try. Because I think that like when your sad and someone hugs you it may not solve anything or even make you better at the time but subconciously it totally did make things better. It just feels like someone loves you, so even if they don't want to be hugged and are repulsed at the very idea it just means they need more hug
Hugging, I have found, is a very personal and emotional thing. It really displays tenderness of affection and closeness. If any of us go through a very difficult and trying situation, a hug (a REAL hug) is pretty much body language for saying: "I don't know what to tell you, but I'm feeling for you and I'm here for you"... If it's a happy occasion, a hug is like saying: "I'm so happy for you, I'm sharing your joy!" And it also gives the huggers, if it's part of a regular greeting or whatnot, it's like "You are a really special friend and I love you alot"...
It's something that draws me to people and it's also a great barometer of one's heart, in my opinion. Words say one thing, but a hug really tells much about one's personality... like whether that person genuinely likes you or not. Some people find it hard to hug, maybe as part of culture or whatnot, but you can usually tell..
and found out the other day that it is a proven point that babies who get hugged and touched more often when they are younger do better in life because they were shown that affection.
