File Sharers: See If the Recording Industry Is After You

rocksupastar by rocksupastar · Jul 28, 2003 · News · 220 views

Wow, just saw this a few minutes ago... kinda crazy, towards the bottom of the page you can see if your username or IP is on the RIAA list.

San Francisco - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today offered important resources to those wondering whether the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed a subpoena seeking their identities in connection with a crackdown on music file-sharing.

A username appearing in the database does not confirm absolutely that the RIAA has issued a subpoena seeking the name of a particular person, since file sharing services support duplicate usernames as well as allow multiple people to use the same account or same computer. Nor do the records in database reflect all subpoenas issued, due to lags between issuance and entry into the court's electronic record system by court employees. The EFF subpoena database also permits people to check if the recording industry named their Internet address, known as an IP address, in a subpoena.

While there is no way to know exactly what the RIAA is going to do, who it is going to sue, or even how much music qualifies as a "substantial" amount, users of P2P networks can take the following steps to reduce their chances of being sued:

Either:

Make sure there are no potentially infringing files in your shared folder. This would ordinarily mean that your shared folder contains only files
1) that are in the public domain,
2) for which you have permission to share, or
3) that are made available under pro-sharing licenses, such as the Creative Commons license or other open media licenses, and
Remove all potentially misleading file names that might be confused with the name of an RIAA artist or song (e.g., "Usher" or "Madonna") from your shared folder.

Or:

Disable the "sharing" or "uploading" features on your P2P application that allow other users on the network to get copies of files from your computer or scan any of your music directories. We hate this option, but it does appear that it will reduce your chances of becoming an RIAA target right now.

i think... i am functioning as a supernode at home...aaaargh. not at work though. for some reason that box was checked.

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002

hmm... you have to enter your name and or IP address? Maybe it's a scam to add the name you just entered into the list !

togatweeter togatweeterOG 2003

that's wat i thought too

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

that would be pretty slick, yesterday the site was bogged down cause of the volume of people hitting it. That would suck if thats how they got IP's

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

yeah i didn't put my IP in there. i did put my kazaalite username. but i realized later that i think i made up a fake one last time i installed it. i used "iwz"

impressive... superhuman like even... scratch one up on the ole board for dan the (non dairy milk-)man

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

ok HOLD ON i have something to say on this subject. i was shopping last night for the ingredients in choclate chip cookies, i picked up some milk...i hardly ever shop for milk (for obvious reasons) but i saw a lot of different kinds. Answer a question for me, Saturn boy...is 2% just watered down whole milk? Are people paying more for water? If that's the case, something is very, very wrong with today's society.

i personally thought that is was called whole milk (or full fat in american) because none of the fat had been removed, and then Semi skimmed (or 2%) is called it because half of the fat has been skimmed off or removed (i assume leaving 2%) and then skimmed has had virtually all the fat removed. As far as i know skimmed and semi skimmed retain all the nutrients of whole (or full fat milk) but just with less fat.

I may be wrong but i don't think they just water it down Dan, youll be happy to know :D

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

i think they do. my mom says that whole milk is really only 4% fat. (but she is also allergic to milk so i don't know if her opinion counts). hey ian can you research this for me, highlight all the relevant parts, and then print it, drive it over to my house, and explain it to me? Thanks.

daniel i a rarely wrong, i think youll find my opinion is more feasible that watering it down SO CHECK IT OUT AND LET ME KNOW :D

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder nine9star

hmm, you may be rarely wrong, but from your english and sentence structure... i would think it be feasible that dan go to someone else MORE reliable than a mingin brit!

i like 50% milk. half fat, half milk.... mmmmmm

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder thefunkyfresh

lol, mm, I love 50% fat chocolate milk- All the buttery goodness of 1/2 milk, 1/2 fat, but more chocolatey flavored!

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 flomojopoanode

this thread has become very disgusting.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder skaorsk8

i now specifically remember a conversation i had with pete granata about 7 years ago regarding how much we loved fat-milk (chocolate)

magnum magnumOG 2001

umm if everyone disables sharing there goes p2p haha, idiots, p2p is going bye bye! Every person they get to disable sharing is a win for them!

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

and every time you stay on long island instead of getting off your couch and coming to NJ, that's a win for me!

magnum magnumOG 2001

not my fault your to dumb to comprhend the whole idea of file sharing, go back to playing with your little phones.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

i understand it fool...why don't you, in your infinite cleverness, explain supernodes. go ahead.

magnum magnumOG 2001

where did supernodes come into play in this discussion?

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

because...i believe i am functioning as one ...i found out what it is anyway. it's when kazaa uses your computer to store the locations of all the songs on the network.

GET A ROOM!

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002

my dad just walked in and said that on cnn there was a report saying how they handed out subpoenas to kazaa users (including a 14 year old boy). dad says if i don't find articles proving downloading music isn't illegal he's going to take kazaa off the computer. this is pretty annoying to me because i don't download entire albums-i download songs here and there to make mixes. if anyone has info for me please share.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

why not just point out that downloading music is illegal because of the monopoly that recording companies have on the united states government?

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002

they should do a show... where there's one millionaire guy.. the bachelor.. and then 10 women. and at the end.. they'll be a plot twist... that he's really a Transvestite.. and if they girl is still in love.. they should then reveal that he really isn't a millionaire.. and if the girls still in love... they should all of a sudden tell the truth that he's really osama bin laden. and when she says " noooo i can't handle that " they should be like " OH.. we just kidding " and then Stone her.. because she supposedly was in love.. but couldn't handle a little thing as being a poor transvestite osama bin laden. i mean.. i thought love was unconditional.

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002

i clearly commented into the wrong news story. sorry just a little drunk
