How common is your family surname?

hunkpapap by hunkpapap · Nov 26, 2003 · Family News · 544 views · ·

Ok, so i thought this site was neat, it tells you how frequently occuring a word is, most namely a last name. My last name is the 13,000+ most popular name in the US, whereas a name like Hill is the 33rd most common in the US. Try it out and see where your family ranks:

that means we're special! the alternate spelling (valente) is even less 0.0002%

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Wait a minute. Wouldn't that make you less special?

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

haha no cus so few people have such a great last name...we're special (special) so special (special)

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Hahaha. I love my last name. It's so fun to try and get people who've heard it pronounced to spell it properly, or people who've seen it spelled to pronounce it properly. It seems like no one can do both. Italian names are awesome.

magnum magnumOG 2001 ·

my name has no page :/ Probably because the only ones in this country are related to us.

T

My last name is obviously not that common. Oneglia doesn't even get a page.

D

Actually, you may be right. I just checked some of the Italian names in my genealogy. The only ones that site listed were Giaimo, Gallo, and Porcelli. It didn't have Facciolo, Zanelli, Lagoria, Cutulle, Perruccio, Petrolo, or D'maggio. (Though it did have Perrucci and Dimaggio which are fairly close.)

Did anyone else notice that this site also has information on frequency of first names? Apparently, my first name, Daniel, is the 12th most popular male first name in the United States; frequency is 0.974%; percentile is 25.194 [SourceCBN]. (My middle name, Micah, is the 520th most popular male first name in the United States; frequency is 0.017%; percentile is 84.820 [SourceCBN].)

Lindsay is the 302nd most popular female first name in the United States; frequency is 0.060%; percentile is 66.507 [SourceCBN]

I'm guessing this means that there are some guys out there named lindsay?

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Yup. A lot of those English/Irish names that end in y are unisex. Shirley, Courtney, Lindsay, Terry, etc...

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Have you ever met a male Lindsay?

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Personally, no. (Actually, I think I've only met two people with that name, and one of them spells it Lyndsi.) But a quick search on the internet turned up this, so there definitely are guys with that name.

yodasucka yodasuckaOG 2003 ·

I HAVE! I HAVE! hes a big guy too... like you would expect him to be a skinny nerdy guy... but hes really tall and built... MMMM! haha ok i'm done...

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

relax capitan that's what i was trying to figure out.

yodasucka yodasuckaOG 2003 ·

haha yea, i only know ONE male Lindsay and hes it...

T
toxicgirlOG 2003 ·

The guitarist from Fleetwood Mac is named Lindsay Buckingham...he used to be married to Stevie Nicks.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Interesting..it just doesn't seem like a good guy's name.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Really? It sounds a little unusual to me because I'm so used to Lindsay being a girl's name, but, frankly, I think it sounds better as a guy's name.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Why do you say that? I think it's a very feminine name.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

To me "Lindsay" sounds very neutral, and I don't like girl's names to sound neutral. To be honest, there are very few girl's names that I actually like, and almost all of those that I do like end in 'a'. I tend to think they sound more feminine that way.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 · dgiaimo

Really? I tend to think that L's are very feminie. Like, even the name Lawrence isn't too manly sounding and...well I don't like the name Larry but it's the nasty A in there that makes it sound more manly then the L does.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder · thatdarngirl

what about luke? or louis? or lester, lenny, lambert, lampton, or lonnie? lonnie can go both ways. hehe... go both ways... hehe

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 · thefunkyfresh

Hah, when I was trying to think up L names I couldn't think of ANY! But you're right. Luke..that's definetly a guy and Louis that can be a girl name, Lester..ugh.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 · thatdarngirl

L's definitely do help make a name sound more feminine. In fact, my favorite girl's name has an l in it. But "Lindsay" (as well as the other names I mentioned) sounds more tomboyish than feminine to me.
