Time Travel....Just Another Sci-Fi Cliché?

ophelia by ophelia · Dec 4, 2003 · Article · 580 views · ·

Something that's always interested me is the concept of time travel - & how Einstein's theory of relativity basically makes it a reality, as opposed to what many people would naturally think. Well, the theory of relativity isn't really a theory anymore, it's been proven - which would by association would aslo make time travel a reality..Think I'm just jive talkin?....Step into my office, I'm about to drop some knowledge on ya....

So you THOUGHT Back To The Future, was nothing more than a good Spielberg flick? EZZZZZZZZZZZZT(sound of a game show buzzer indicating that you, are wrong). I'm sure I'm not the only ezabeler that's aware of this, but, scientists have known for a while that time travel, at least into the future, is not only possible, but IT'S ALREADY BEEN DONE. Basically, the faster one object moves in relation to another, the slower time goes for it. This is because space, and time, are linked - the faster you move through one, the faster you move through the other. So time would be slower in the sence that, I, moving at the speed of light, because of my speed, have just skipped 20 years into the future...You, moving a lot slower, still have to wait 20 years to get where I currently am. The thing is, I SHOULD be 20 years older, but I'm not, I'm 20 years in the future, without having aged.(Kinda like Cher..It seems plastic surgery is a form of time travel)..Hence, time moved slower for me in relation to you...Sound crazy?....Look @ this....http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/einstein/hotsciencetwin/test.html

That..I don't even know what to say about that because I'm not sure if I can fully comprehend it without my head hurting.

I saw a show on this last night on the learning channel, and there's one man who's maybe 1/2 second behind the rest of us because he was on a space station for 2 years.

Interesting Side note...This sort of "time travel" is a part of the Ender Series.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

is the 1/2 sec even noticeable for him?

iwz iwz ·

yeah.. it's really weird tho. since he's a half second in the past, he can't drive a car, cause he's always delayed. you can't talk to him normally, cause it's like talking to somebody over a satellite link. also, if he starts running, he turns invisible because he starts slipping even further into the past. and his hair grows slower.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

ian stop lying it doesn't suit you

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

Can we just admit that his "lies" were dripping with sarcasm? It's kinda humorous.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

i give him points for trying to be funny. ian - +1.5 for you!

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

why are you guys taking his side?? jk

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Ian you totally had me until "also, if he starts running, he turns invisible because he starts slipping even further into the past."

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

he doesn't stay a 1/2 second in the past, he would just experience a half second less of aging then everybody else....& it's not a 1/2 second it's a lot less, but it still illustrates the principal though

ekulu ekuluOG 2002 ·

yea, time travel has always been possible. i saw something about a while ago on pbs. but time trravel is only really interesting if you can go to the past!

ekulu ekuluOG 2002 ·

in fact everybody has their own personal time or clock. the simple act or driving in a car or going up in an elevator changes your time from that of other peoples.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

yeah, by an EXTREMELY minute & probably immeasurable amount..but..yeah...like, if two people, were born @ the SAME exact time, to the trillionths of a second, and you waited 10 years & gauged their age, to us, they'd both be 10, but, in terms of quantum physics & such, their age would differ because of their differing rates of movement through life

beachbum beachbumOG 2002 ·

ok so it changes "time" in a sense, but it's not like you can go see things far future b/c if you are moving faster than everyone else, nobody has done anything yet for you to be able to see.

omegatweeter omegatweeterOG 2003 ·

i thought this was gonna say it's possible to travel both to the future and to the past. i understand time travel into the future, i kinda learned that stuff in physics, pretty interesting.

ilikebirds ilikebirdsOG 2002 ·

thats the most basic sense of time travel ever. thats childs play. i invented something much better . but i can't share.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

i'm guessing you invented post-its

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Well... This isn't quite true. First of all, no scientific theory is ever truly "proven". It can amass sufficient evidence that it is considered as fact by the scientific world, but it is never "proven". Also, Einstein's theory of relativity is a little more complicated than you're making it. What it actually says is that time must be treated as another dimension like the three we know, and that it is meaningless to say that it is the same time at two different points in the universe. In fact it's meaningless to talk about the passage of time at all in Einstein's theory.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

so, what i'm about to say isn't at all argumentative, I'm simply explaining myself.....the word "proven" just suggests that what's being talked about, through observation of events, has been found to be a reality - NASA deliberately offesets the clocks in their satilites to make up for the lag the clocks will have due to their high speeds..If they DIDN'T do this, the clocks would lag behind, and lose sync w/the the relatively stationary clocks back on earth...this, along w/many other things, proves that time is slower for an object in relation to another if it is moving faster than it...&, about eintstein's theory stating that it's meaningless to discuss time, I was simply using what he & others have found, to support a train of thought that I was on, regardless of whether he thinks time is important or not...ok I'm done

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Oh, I knew what you meant. I was just being perverse. I just wanted to point out that the theory of relativity is a lot crazier than even you made it sound.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

well of course, the stuff I mentioned here was, at the very most the tip of an ice burg - but I wanted to keep the peoples interest!..lol, pulling a steven hawking & writing a novel might have made ian weary as to whether he should even approve the story or not

im a bit confused by all this, but very interested, i say we should have a class on this... soo cool!

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

yes, we WILL have a class on this subject, every tuesday & thrusday night @ 7:30!..I'm starting a time travelers club in my basement!!!...ezabel's funding it, and it's efforts to ulitmately build a time machine out of household products!...if we mix just the right amount of Lemon Joy, granolla, bathroom air freshner and bleach, we MIGHT just be able to tap into the quantum fabric of space-time...or cause a chemical reaction that'd create fumes we would all end up dying from inhalling...but hey!!.it's all in the name of science!!..people die all the time, it's no biggie

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

hmmm you've picked some odd times to hold your classes

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

shhh!!!!!!!.....

hey, have some respect. talking about someones sisters butt puts them in an awkward situation. and chances are bally could savagely whip your behind. imagine if someone said Dan's sister had a nice butt or something. Dan'd call down evil upon them!

slackers!

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

It was in 1997, or 1998, I remember there being an article of scientists claiming they did a time travel experiment that worked. Put your initial reactions aside, because, strangely enough, it didn't sound too far off.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

d'you remember any names?..I wanna look that up, sounds interesting....oh, & hey, have you, or anybody, every heard anything about the Philidelphia Experiment?..I remember hearing something about how some government experiment on a battle ship went wrong and somehow they screwed w/space time, and people like de-materialized and would suddenly appear back - accept sometimes they'd reappear in spots that already had solid matter taking up the space - so they'd like be stuck in a wall or something...sounds weird, but, I definately remember reading something about it in a credible source

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

I've heard about the Philadelphia experiment, (in fact there are a couple of movies based on it), but there's no evidence that it ever took place. There's no reason to even believe that what some people believe happened is even physically possible.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

no, i never really knew if it was something w/adequate evidence surounding it or just an urban legend or

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

It's one of those things that conspiracy theorists love to talk about, but I don't think anyone else actually believes anything even remotely similar to what they claim happened actually happened.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Oh no..I believe it..I was there.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Wow. I guess time travel really does work since it was supposed to have happened in 1943.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Or perhaps I just lie about my age.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

No and no. I'll try to look them both up.

hunkpapap hunkpapapOG 2003 ·

wait, didn't you just explain the theory of relativity?

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

in part, why?.........

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

interesting thought: Time travel into the future is known to be possible, but time travel into the past is a lot sketchier, and most likely impossible....say some genius figures out how to do it,& for some reason wanted to go back and try to kill his grandfather, one might think that in doing so, he'd cancel out his own existance, right?...NOPE...Something would get in his way to stop him, because of what is called The Grandfather Paradox - if he killed his grandfather, the time traveler would of never been born, and so would of never been able to build the time machine in the first place, and he would of never been able to go back into the past to begin with - crazy stuff

iwz iwz ·

you're way off dude, didn't you ever see BTTF2? the universe would explode.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 ·

hahaha...yeah, I gota stop using reputable sources(that stephen hawking book The Universe In A Nutshell is awesome!) & just start resorting to speilbergian philosophy....
