well it depends on the context. a spinal tap is good in some ways.

doctor: "mrs. jones, we're not sure if you have menengitis or not, but you have two options. we can either give you a spinal tap, which while painful, is 95% accurate in determining this condition... or, i can just sit here and tap you on the shoulder for 5 hours, which has the two-fold benefit of being not only annoying but useless in diagnosing anything. it's your call".

so in this case, i'm sure you would agree that a spinal tap is better.
