when did glasses and intelligence get all entwined to begin with...do intellectuals usually have poor eyesight?...cause i know some pretty dumb people, who wear glasses

Because people know that glasses generally don't make them look better so to make people feel better they started telling them that wearing glasses makes them look smarter. It's the only compliment people could come up with.
generally people who read a lot and do tons of science experiments use their eyes more strenuously and are constantly analyzing things, putting more than the usual strain on thier eyes. thats why they say smart people wear glasses. it's an old, tired addage that doesn't apply anymore. because i know people, who are stupid, without an ounce of common sense, who have never conducted a single science experiment, who wear glasses.
