punk isn't punk just because a record label or music store puts the band or cd in a punk section/category. none of us can really define which bands are or aren't punk (it's all opinion), but this was dictionary.com's definition: rock music with deliberately offensive lyrics expressing anger and social alienation; in part a reaction against progressive rock. the bands alex mentioned don't have that attitude overall.
also a big show doesn't neccessarily mean it's a good show. the bands playing at irving aren't really the "scene" bands. for the ny scene: try going to knitting factory, southpaw, or townhall. and if punk really had a scene would it still be punk?? i think that would totally negate the definition of pure punk.
I concur. Take the Sex Pistols? They hated music labels so much they "swindled" two of them and then only made one record, expressing their distaste. That's the true definition of punk.
