I had just the oppisite reaction on Wednesday. I got asked by one of the higher ups to help plan a farewell to a really sweet intern that spent the summer with us.
I made it a suprise, I I emailed the invitation secretly and reserved the conference room...layed out the table gathered everyone together.

Everyone really appreciated it =)
I'm still getting thank you's...I feel for ya babe 'cause yours took a lot more effort and this dude should have been a lot more respectful/appreciative.
