Okay tech question: We have optimum online with their cable modem. My sister as an ibook-wireless capable. What kind of router should we get so she can share in on the internet goodness?

iwz Sep 13, 2006

I use a netgear at home, and I'm happy with it. Pretty much any standard 802.11g router will be fine. Just don't go for one of the super turbocharged ones that say they're 100mbit or faster, as ...

Okay..so my sister actually ran out before I got an answer and got this Belkin Wireless G Router. I can't get it hooked up to the computer, though. The wire they gave us that is supposed to connect the router to the computer doesn't fit in any of the plug-socket thingies.

The router doesn't connect to the computer, it connects via CAT-5 cable to the cable modem. The computer connects wirelessly.

Are you sure? THey provide a wire that is supposed to connect the router to the computer because you're using the wire that used to connect the computer to the modem to connect the modem to the router. I thought that just the laptop was going to connect wirelessly while my desktop would still be plugged in?

Will a router slow down my internet connection?

I guess you can do that. Usually wireless routers have a few ports in the back to connect wired devices. They should use the same type of cable that was connecting your computer to the modem before. (CAT-5 cable)

Actually, sometimes they allow you to connect using a USB port instead. Is it a USB connector? Does it look like this?

It's not as USB connector, that's the problem. Our modem was connected to the computer using a USB connector but they gave us a wire that has a phone-jack looking connector that doesn't fit in the phone-jack outlet on the computer.

model # of router would be nice so as to help

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Where would this model number be? It just says Belkin, Wireless G (or 802.11g) Router

That would be a CAT-5 cable. :) I take it you don't have an ethernet card in your computer? That seems really odd to me since just about every computer comes with one standard. If your computer really doesn't have one, then your only option would probably be to get something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/F5D7050-Wireless-802-11g-Network-Adapter/dp/B0002HA7FY/ref=pd_sim_e_3/104-2374995-6059938?ie=UTF8

to connect wireless through your usb port. Either that or buy an ethernet card, (they're cheap), and have a local geek install it for you.

:-) I loved 'watching' this play out... I am always getting the calls for this kinda stuff... y'all did a fine job!

yeah, sounds like you need a network card in your computer. surprising that your computer doesn't have one already. (is it old??)

keep looking around on the back for another jack, maybe you missed it

I'm really surprised it has a USB port and not a network card. I don't remember USB becoming popular until after network cards were pretty much standard.

My computer isn't that old. It originally just had USB 1.0 port (something like that) and Lance put a 2.0 whatever version USB port on in it for me so I could use my ipod.

i think lance needs to be fired for not properly making sure your computer had EVERYTHING it needed.
