Someone explain to me the point of showing the VA Tech killers video? Looks to me it was revealed for entertainment factor. Makes me sick to my stomach...
There was a psychiatrist on Good Morning America that shot down the networks for showing it. I don't blame him. Kids don't need to see that.
I dont see what the big deal is? I mean, its a reality, it happend, you cant change that now. The kids see much worse on the news, in movies or on TV. I understand that it's more personal to them, ...
Yeah, but I think they should limit it to just talking about it. Showing a psycho rant in a video is the same as showing a kid a movie about a serial killer that is graphic. At least thats the wa...
i don't know about there but here we've always been exposed to things like that on the news. I can see your point tho. they do show WAY too much & they live for exposing someone else's misfortune...
Well, that you can't forsee. They knew what they had with this footage. That's kind of like during the WTC coverage. They had no idea the buildings would fall or that people would jump out windows.
When I was in college there was a crazy kid who shot his head off with a shotgun in the parking lot in-between two dorms so that everyone could see... he started screaming his ex-girlfriends name outside the dorm, wanting to go inside and when that didnt work he went outside and started screaming again in a way that he drew so much attention that he looked up at her while she was watching out the window and he blew his head off... The sound of the shotgun was heard campus wide... and all the students who heard it ran to the scene... It was probably one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen, but it is a reality, it happens, it wasnt a movie or a show or a game. The only way to get over it is to realize what happend. And to learn from it. Of course it was more dramatic for everyone who watched the whole scene and the poor ex-girlfriend was so dramatized that she dropped out of college and no one really heard from her again...
I think brotherman's beef is that, while of course these things happen in the world and can't be avoided, he doesn't want his kids to be exposed to these things needlessly.
I can see where he's coming from; you could easily say that the media is glorifying him by showing the stuff. Does the general public need to see his manifesto and video tapes? What do we gain from it?
It's like when they show Al Qaeda or Bin Laden tapes on the news. It may be interesting to some, and certainly help ratings, but if I had children, I don't see any reason why I would want them to see that sort of thing.
ooh totally i think that they are glorifying it and posting all the "bad" or "scary" pics to get people to check it out.
I feel bad for this kid, he obviously had ALOT of issues, he didnt even really say what he was upset about... just a buncha weird ramblings.
yeah the kid was obviously sick and in need of help that he didn't get
wait wait wait... ok, so i looked at the news coverage. How is this disturbing? I mean yes, the guy is obviously crazy, but he doesnt SAY anything thats particularly disturbing or DO anything that horrible.
Should little kids follow this coverage? I dont see why they should, there isnt anything in that footage that they can learn from. I think this will def put a scare in everyones minds of how serious mental illness is and how lax some of the schools are with providing care for those that need it.
it's not disturbing, but i don't think kids need to see it over and over either. the only problem i have with it is the copycat factor. by showing this loser's "manifesto," by giving him so much air-time, by making him a rockstar, you're showing that if you kill people you'll get on TV, you'll get noticed, your case will be scrutinized, and everyone will talk about you after you've killed yourself. mentally ill people love the sound of that, especially if they have something they think needs to be said.
now, i wouldn't call this thing he did a manifesto. he sent out a press kit! he didn't single out anyone or any institution. he didn't attack anyone in particular. he rambled on and on about hate of rich kids and religion and then he shot up a bunch of students. that's not a statement. his reality was swapped for a fantasy world where he was this hated, tormented figure. still everyone has all this psychological reasoning and blah blah blah. whatever happened to plain crazy? today, i mourn the death of "crazy" in america.
my favorite is the picture of him holding a hammer.. he looks real tough.. hehehehe
I blame video games!
