Did anyone else notice that this site also has information on frequency of first names? Apparently, my first name, Daniel, is the 12th most popular male first name in the United States; frequency ...

Lindsay is the 1,211th most popular male first name in the United States; frequency is 0.004%; percentile is 90.011 [SourceCBN]

Lindsay is the 302nd most popular female first name in the United States; frequency is 0.060%; percentile is 66.507 [SourceCBN]

I'm guessing this means that there are some guys out there named lindsay?

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

Yup. A lot of those English/Irish names that end in y are unisex. Shirley, Courtney, Lindsay, Terry, etc...

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Have you ever met a male Lindsay?

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

Personally, no. (Actually, I think I've only met two people with that name, and one of them spells it Lyndsi.) But a quick search on the internet turned up this, so there definitely are guys with that name.

The guitarist from Fleetwood Mac is named Lindsay Buckingham...he used to be married to Stevie Nicks.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Interesting..it just doesn't seem like a good guy's name.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

Really? It sounds a little unusual to me because I'm so used to Lindsay being a girl's name, but, frankly, I think it sounds better as a guy's name.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Why do you say that? I think it's a very feminine name.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

To me "Lindsay" sounds very neutral, and I don't like girl's names to sound neutral. To be honest, there are very few girl's names that I actually like, and almost all of those that I do like end in 'a'. I tend to think they sound more feminine that way.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Really? I tend to think that L's are very feminie. Like, even the name Lawrence isn't too manly sounding and...well I don't like the name Larry but it's the nasty A in there that makes it sound more manly then the L does.

what about luke? or louis? or lester, lenny, lambert, lampton, or lonnie? lonnie can go both ways. hehe... go both ways... hehe

Hah, when I was trying to think up L names I couldn't think of ANY! But you're right. Luke..that's definetly a guy and Louis that can be a girl name, Lester..ugh.

L's definitely do help make a name sound more feminine. In fact, my favorite girl's name has an l in it. But "Lindsay" (as well as the other names I mentioned) sounds more tomboyish than feminine to me.
