What do you do?/What do you like about it?

Throughtout the day, I spend a lot of time e-mailing and surfing around on the net. This has led someone to ask the question "What kind of job do you have"? Henceforth I was wondering what all of you in ezabel land do for a living.

I work an inside sales position and I love it. We manufacture thermal transfer labels which companies use for barcoding & shipping. Usually when Watchtower sends in a box of litature to your congregation, It has a thermal label on it. I like the job because it gives me freedom to work and build my own business, the way i see fit. We are given a dollar amount to sale for the month. As long as we hit our numbers, we can pretty much do what we want. We can come and leave as we please. It's guys who sit with their legs up on their desk and read the paper or surf the net all day. The sweet thing is that out of 30 sales reps, 15 of them currently make over $100,000 a year. Our top guy will make $350,000 this year. I've been here for close to a year now and have made more than I ever have made before. Real opportunity, Freedom, Benefits, what else could I ask for...

We'll thats what I do, and What I like, now what about you...

I'm a Draftsman. I create and modify drawings for medical implant devices using 2-D and 3-D CAD software. The job is kind of boring since I do more clerical work then creative work. It pays the bills though. Well okay, I pay my bills after I hand almost half my salary over to a woman that does not love me and has forced me into a half finished attic sleeping on a futon in my parent's house while trying to find a stinkin' program to watch on Cablevision's lousy lineup on IO. But that's a story for another time. For all you brothers looking for women, THEY'RE EVIL!!! Did I say that out loud? Oops. I'm sure some of you ladies are sane. LOL.

No what's not right is getting your head ripped off for asking your sister if she wants you to save the last of the leftovers from dinner the previous night so she can take them with her to work for lunch. Man it's sooooo wrong some of the stuff I get yelled at for. Now that is just wrong. :-P

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

perrin perrinOG 2004 socalgal

aww man, the word sales makes me cringe..I worked @ a company called Systemax, selling computer related products business to business for 6 months, & I HATED it...I'm not like, computer illiterate or anything, but i'm no techie either - so I was shocked when I got the job cause I thought they only wanted people w/SERIOUS IT knowledge..it turns out, i was dealing w/IT guys from different compananies who already knew what they wanted, MFR# & all..& the $$ was good...but it was SOOOOO stressfull!..yours doesn't seem to be all that much of a headache though

Im a graphic Artist/commercial photographer. I work specifically with screenprint companies, either an hourly employee or as a freelance artist. It's very cool - I get to design stuff that ends up on peoples shirts, uniforms, signs for what-nots... and bands, radio stations. It's cool - but here in PA waitressing pays the rent...

perrin #11 perrinOG 2004

Up until about a month ago I worked for FedEx Ground as a package handler working at 2:00 in the morning. I started out working 5 days a week tuesday-Saturday morning. Very physically tiring work. After 1,000hrs I finally got benefits. I was there longer than anyone else on any of the belts except for the managers. I even out lasted some of them and I only worked there for 2 1/4 years. The good thing was I worked there for so long my boss didn't want to let me go so he let me work 2 days a week and I still got to keep my benefits. I did that until I just couldn't do the job anymore. There is just only so long you can do a job like that for before you have to quit.

I am a Registered Dental Hygienist. I clean teeth, take x-rays and point out the spots that the Dentist will proclaim to be cavities (I am not legally permitted to diagnose disease). I LOVE being in a health field. I meet tons of new people and use my knowledge of the whole body to give advice on healthier living. But who knows, in a couple of years (if I can afford it) I would like to go back to school and become an Oral Surgeon and cut ppl up.

skaorsk8 #10.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

well, if you know where the cavaties are, then why do i have to get x-rays just to discover that i don't have any?

T
#10.1.1 toxicgirlOG 2003

because we can see in between the teeth. we can only see the tops and the sides of the teeth. please don't tell me you are one of those types that gets their panties in a bunch over x-rays.

skaorsk8 #10.1.1.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

yeah well if i have to spend the money to get them EVERY time i go to the dentist, and she always looks at them and says "Your teeth are beatiful, you can go", i don't see the point of them. like, ok, why did we do this?

on another note, my dentist is kinda hot.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003

Because if something ended up to be wrong (and could have been diagnosed sooner in an x-ray that should have been updated yearly or every year and a half) you could sue. You could sue us for supervised neglect. It isn't fun.

i've worked other things before (retail blah blah) but working with kids is just better. i get to spend all my time sitting in a nice warm home, eating all their food, and playing games and watching TV haha pay is great and i feel satisfied at the end of my day..
as long as i can remember i've wanted to be a teacher... so hopefully when i actully do it, i'll be happy. i guess i just like being with kids. makes me feel good when i can help them with their homework and be there for them when they've had a rough day at school... man... i sound like a loser... i'm stopping now...

thatdarngirl #5.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

How many credits do you usually take per semester and what school do you go to?

tinser #5.1.1 tinserOG 2002

the honors college at Adelphi University. This semester i'm only taking 16 credits....but from here on out, i think it's going to be 17...maybe 18 (i'm getting my masters in 5 yrs, so it's a lot because of that)

what about you?

skaorsk8 #5.1.1.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

five years of school?? wow. that is a mad long time.

tinser tinserOG 2002

not for a masters...6 is standard for a masters

thatdarngirl #5.1.1.2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Gee now I feel lazy! I'm only taking 12 this semester, I took 15 last. I set my schedule up so I can get a part time job because my dad told me I had to.

tinser tinserOG 2002

don't feel lazy...college is hard even at 12 credits. That's 4 classes right? I took 4 classes one for my second semester i think...i think it worked out to 13 credits. And, that was still not easy

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Yeah..I mean, it's not super easy where I have no work or anything (especially since two are lit/writing classes) but I could probably do 15 as well. It just makes me very anxious when I have too much to do, even if I have enough time.

tinser tinserOG 2002

if i did all my work, i probably wouldnt be able to handle it. I am an eXpert at cutting corners. I got a 98 on my history midterm and a 99 on the final last semester....and i picked the book up for the first time one week before each. If i actually did the readings...well, then i wouldn't have much time to do anything else...i dont know how some people do it, but then again...people always tell me they dont know how i do it

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

Wow. I could do that for math courses, (I didn't even really start seriously attending the lectures until I was a junior and taking graduate level courses), but there's no way I could do that and get an A for a history course.

tinser tinserOG 2002

I think a lot of it also has to do with how good the teacher is. If the teacher doesn't talk about the subject in class, i can't really get away with it. I guess i'm just one of those auditory learners, because i've always been able to get away with just listening in class and doing minimal, if any reading, and still get A's.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

I do most of my reading. I don't really need to for Sociology, a lot of that stuff is common sense to me. However, when I was in psych I had to read because all that brain stuff was completely foreign but some of the other concepts weren't. For literature I just like reading and I want to do good in it because I want to be a good teacher and really know that material. I have to read a lot when I take history because while I enjoy the subject I'm very bad at it.

What I am saying is that the door is open for you to make as much as you want to make. If you want to make 30k a year, go for it. If you want to make 300k a year, suit yourself. If the sun is shining and you want to go swimming or play golf, go for it. You have the freedom here that a lot of companies don't give you. The vast majority of my new business is gained from cold calls. I look at those here who hardly work and reason if they can pull in that type of "jack", I probally can do pretty decent with my work ethic.

There's an article on tattoos in the 8/8/2000 awake. My understanding is that getting a tattoo is certainly a matter of conscience, *however* brothers who do so may be held back from serving as elders/ministerial servants/pioneers in the congregation and sisters may be held back from pioneering.

magnum magnumOG 2001 thatdarngirl

yodasucka yodasuckaOG 2003 magnum

the deal is it is a conscience matter however, if u have one VISABLE, you can't have privledges in the congragation... if its not visable- its a conscience matter.. thats how my dad explained it to me anyways haha

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 yodasucka

Yeah..that's how I thought it went.

magnum magnumOG 2001 yodasucka

if you are wearing a suit the only way it could be visible is on your face or somethin :p

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 yodasucka

It's a conscience matter in either case. Having privileges is just that, a privilege. In order to have them you must be "exemplary", as in, above and beyond what is required. You can be a perfectly fine witness in good standing in the congregation with absolutely no privileges whatsoever.

Oh, and as far as visible/non-visible tattoos go, unless they've gotten specific direction from the Society, that sort of thing is up to the local body of elders to decide on. So while the body in your congregation has decided to do it that way, the body in another congregation might decide on something completely different.

jay79 jay79OG 2001 dgiaimo

My dad is an elder in my hall, and he has a tattoo right on his arm (he DID get it when he wasn't in the truth) of a skull with a knife through the eye that says "death before dishonor"... and he's been an elder for like 15 years

tinser tinserOG 2002 jay79

well, i think being in the truth or not when you get it makes a big difference. You can change, and still be considered exemplorary

perrin perrinOG 2004 tinser

Oh yeah defenitly. If you didn't know something was wrong and did it it's much different then if you know it is and still do it.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 jay79
