Palm Pilot Vs. Pocket PC's

meadowzephyr by meadowzephyrOG 2003 · Aug 20, 2003 · 209 views · ·

I don't know if I can rightfully call myself a "geek" but I do have a quasi-geeky question. For a while palm pilots were the pda of choice then came pocket PCs with greater capabilities. If I understand correctly pocket pcs have more pc like applications, miniature versions of word and excel etc. and greater internet capabilities.

But my question is can documents created in these minature programs be transferred to say let's say ms word on your PC? How practical are they? Also when you use the internet on a pocket PC aren't you acessing scaled down version of websites. How much access do you really have to the world wide web? Just curious.

I have a pocket pc. I like it because it doesn't require learning another alphabet. Of course, that was more important to me then the other stuff you all talk about.

Oh Yeah, Bozo, You can't sync a PocketPC with a Mac. Only Palm.

And, yes, with both devices it is possible to read/edit word/excel docs on them and bring them back to windows.

ditto to ian's comments...for Palm OS, there are "document on the go" products that will translate your basic doc/spreadsheet/etc files. i've had a handspring visor for about 3 years and it does all i need...for now.

I personally prefer Palm OS devices. They are built to get the job done, not to try to mimic Windows. WinCE devices are bloated and it takes too much to do simple tasks. Palm OS has the usability features down pat.

And as far as browsers go, it all depends on which you use. There are browsers that will render websites pretty faithfully to the real thing, just sizing down images and stuff. But there's also like web "clippings" browser that only will work with certain sites that support pdas.

that was really informative, had no idea that thier were pda's that could scale down the real version of a website...interesting.

i've had both...each device is for different things. i love win ce machines with keyboards, it's a great idea for sending emial without carrying a huge laptop. but palm devices have MUCH better battery life, you can get a month or more from a palm. palms are more suited to addresses, phone numbers, etc.

Have you ever created a word or excel document using a pocket pc?

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

yep. i have an IBM Workpad z50...i use it to type word docs and make spreadsheets occasionally...but now that i have a real laptop, i don't need it anymore..i think i'm gonna put it on ebay soon

Talk to me before you're about to get rid of it. I might be interested. I have a laptop and it rocks, but also looking for something smaller in addition. I'd of course not be ridding the laptop. I'd have both. Everything in it's right place.
